  • The purpose of this study was to compare the dynamic behavior of STEDEF track that of the sleeper floating track on urban rapid transit according to replacing the resilience pads and analyze the necessity of replacing the resilience pads experimentally. It was analyzed that the uniformity of the track support stiffness could be secured by replacing the used resilience pads with new resilience pads. Therefore, by replacing the used resilience pads, the measured track impact factor was found to be dramatically reduced below the track design standard, and it was analyzed that the track support stiffness could be restored to the design value. As a results, it is possible to restore track support stiffness to the design value and reduce track impact factor by replacing timely resilience pads, which is important to securing durability and improving service life of track components.

  • In order to minimize the deformation of asphalt concrete track(ACT) and ensure the structural safety, a wide type concrete sleeper is necessary to distribute vehicle loading and reduce the exposure of the asphalt roadbed. In this research, the wide prestressed concrete(PSC) sleeper for ACT was developed through the shape design and the structural safety was reviewed using finite element analysis. Furthermore, static test, dynamic test and fatigue test were carried out according to EN13230-2 to verify the design appropriateness of the wide PSC sleepers for ACT. The performance test showed that the developed wide PSC sleeper for ACT meets all the performance requirements by European standard.

  • In this study, a theoretical investigation of optimized sleeper spacing which can suppress resonances of a railway track is attempted. To achieve this, we introduced a minimization problem in which the objective function is given by the wave transmittance and the design variable is defined by sleeper distribution. In the analysis the rail is modeled by a Timoshenko beam and the sleeper is represented by a mass. The infinite track analysis is realized by attaching the transmitting boundaries at both ends of the finite optimization region. Through numerical analyses the sleeper spacing effective in reduction of the transmittance is discussed. Furthermore, the feasibility of the proposed method is validated in the aspect of vibration reduction through response analyses for a harmonic load.

  • Wheel load, design velocity, traffic amount (MGT), stiffness and thickness of sub-layers of asphalt concrete track are selected as performance design parameters in this study. A pseudo-static wheel load computed considering the dynamic amplification factor (DAF) based on the design velocity of the KTX was applied to the top of asphalt concrete track for full three dimensional structural analysis using the ABAQUS program. Tensile strains at the bottom of the asphalt concrete layer and vertical strains at the top of the subgrade were computed from the structural FEA with different combinations of performance parameter values for one asphalt concrete track section. Utilizing the computed structural analysis results such as the tensile strains and the vertical strains, it was possible to develop design graphs to investigate proper track sections for different combination of the performance parameters including wheel load, design velocity, traffic amount(MGT), stiffness and thickness of asphalt concrete layers for any given design life. By analyzing the proposed design graphs for asphalt concrete track, it was possible to propose simple design tables that can be used by engineers for the effective and fast design of track.

  • The turnout system of the sleeper floating tracks (STEDEF) on urban transit is a Anti-vibration track composed of a wooden sleeper embedded in a concrete bed and a sleeper resilience pad under the sleeper. Therefore, deterioration and changes in spring stiffness of the sleeper resilience pad could be cause changes in sleeper support conditions. The damage amount of manganese crossings that occurred during the current service period of about 21 years was investigated to be about 17% of the total amount of crossings, and it was analyzed that the damage amount increased after 15 years of use (accumulated passing tonnage of about 550 million tons). In this study, parameter analysis (wheel position, sleeper support condition, and dynamic wheel load) was performed using a three-dimensional numerical model that simulated real manganese crossing and wheel profile, to analyze the damage type and cause of manganese crossing that occurred in the actual field. As a result of this study, when the voided sleeper occurred in the sleeper around the nose, the stress generated in the crossing nose exceeded the yield strength according to the dynamic wheel load considering the design track impact factor. In addition, the analysis results were evaluated to be in good agreement with the location of damage that occurred in the actual field. Therefore, in order to minimize the damage of the manganese crossing, it is necessary to keep the sleeper support condition around the nose part constant. In addition, by considering the uniformity of the boundary conditions under the sleepers, it was analyzed that it would be advantageous to to replace the sleeper resilience pad together when replacing the damaged manganese crossing.

  • In this study, in order to evaluate the damage and deterioration of the track components of sleeper floating track (STEDEF), the field samples(specimens) were taken from the serviced line over 20 years old, and the track components were visually inspected, and investigated by laboratory tests and finite element analysis. As a result of visual inspection, the damage of the rail pad and fastener was slight, but the rubber boot was worn and torn at the edges of bottom. The resilience pads were clearly examined for thickness reduction and fatigue hardening layer. As a result of spring stiffness test of rail pad and resilience pad, the deterioration of rail pad was insignificant, but the deterioration of resilience pad exceeded design standard value. Therefore resilience pad was directly affected by train passing tonnage. As a result of comparing the deterioration state of the field sample and the numerical analysis result, the stress and displacement concentration position of the finite element model and the damage position of the field sample were coincident.

  • With speed up of railway, the demand for safety of the railroad transportation is on the increase in Korea's conventional railways. In additions, freight trains with heavier axle load are required to run conventional railways. In order to solve these requirements, the increase of rail weight and the application of long rail system have been underway in conventional railways. However, the research on ties that is absolutely influencing the track stiffness in ballasted tracks has not been much progress. In this paper, the new H-typed tie is developed to increase the track stiffness and reduce the track irregularity. And from the structural analysis by FE program, the intial design drawing of the new H-typed tie is proposed.

  • The centroid of rail doesn't coincide with the centroid of stringer on target truss bridge. If there is no eccentricity on the bridge, bending stress works only. But in the real design and execution, not only bending stress works but also torsional stress does because of it's eccentricity. So this study evaluates how much the torsional stress by eccentricity effects joint members on the bridge. We investigate the possibility to control torsional stress if we model longitudinal bracing between stringers.

  • Asphalt concrete track (ACT) is a track system connecting wide sleepers and concrete panels on top of an asphalt concrete layer; such a system requires adequate resistance force against various longitudinal and lateral external loads. In this study, a series of experiments were carried out to assess the longitudinal and lateral resistance force of a wide sleeper and concrete panel type ACT. The required shear resistance force of the horizontal displacement restraint device (HDRD) was evaluated. Furthermore, a concrete block type anchor and a steel pipe type anchor were developed as HDRDs. The shear resistance force was decided based on the experimental results of horizontal shear tests for each anchor system. In addition, proper numbers and arrangement design guidelines for the HDRDs were suggested considering the shear resisting capacity and economics for HDRDs applied to ACT.
