  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between peer victimization by peers, bullying, and friendships, with a focus on friendship network, friendship quality, and friends' characteristics. The subjects were 678 fifth and sixth grade primary school children recruited from a public school in Bucheon city. The peer nomination index was used to assess peer victimization, bullying, and friendship network. In addition, children themselves reported on the quality of their friendships using the Friendship Quality Scale. The results showed that victimization by peers was influenced by friendship network size, support, and victimization of friends, whereas bullying was explained by support and the bullying behaviors of friends.

  • This study advances the knowledge of developmental patterns in affiliation with delinquent peers and delinquency during adolescence; data were obtained from waves 1-5 (2003-2007) of the Korea Youth Panel Survey. Semi-parametric group-based modeling (SGM) identified 3 affiliative trajectories of delinquent peers from age 13 to 16: rarely or never, persistently affiliative, and declining groups; and five developmental trajectories of delinquency: non-offending, late onset, low-level continuous, desisting, and chronic groups. A joint trajectory analysis predicted the membership of delinquency trajectories conditional on delinquent peer trajectories. Persistently affiliative group was more likely than others to follow chronic trajectory of delinquency; the rarely or never affiliative group was more likely to be non-offending. This study may help reconcile different theoretical models such as influence, selection, and enhancement models with respect to the role of delinquent peers in delinquency. The distinct theoretical models are equally valid, albeit each model pertains to a specific aspect of longitudinal patterns of affiliation with delinquent peers. Implications of this study for youth welfare were discussed to reduce increased risks for both affiliation with delinquent peers and delinquency.

  • This study explored challenges and desires related to social relationships among adolescents with intellectual disabilities, using the photovoice method. Six adolescents with intellectual disabilities (M = 18.33 years) who are attending a general high school participated in 7 sessions of a photovoice program. They selected themes related to social relationships through group discussions and shared their photos related to the themes with other participants. Our study yielded 15 subthemes within 5 social relationships (peers, teachers, boyfriends/girlfriends, parents, persons whom I need) from adolescents with intellectual disabilities as follows: relationships with peers (feeling lonely and left out, being teased and bullied by peers, making efforts to fix damaged relationships with friends), relationships with teachers (feeling appreciated by teachers who understand me, lacking interactions with teachers, wanting teachers to show they care about my school life), relationships with boyfriends/girlfriends (wanting to have a boyfriend/girlfriend, feeling worried and fearful about having a boyfriend/girlfriend, trying to attract a boyfriend/girlfriend), relationships with parents (being thankful to parents for their unconditioned love, enjoying time with parents, feeling bad because of not being close to father), persons whom I need (persons who enjoy spending time with me, persons who help me, persons who never give up on me). This study provides implications for social work practice, such as training for improving peer relationships and coping with peer conflict, education for fostering healthy romantic relationships, training for promoting social skills of adolescents with intellectual disabilities, and education for increasing awareness of the social needs of students with intellectual disabilities among peers without disabilities, teachers, and social workers.

The subjects were total 332 students of the 5th and 6th grade in elementary school and 1st and 2nd grade in junior school. The data were collected by means of the self-report questionnaire. The results of this study were as follows: Firstly, the direct effect of humanity on resilience, empathy, and friendship was found. Resilience also influence friendship directly, but empathy did not affect friendship. Secondly, humanity had influence on friendship partially mediated by resilience, but not mediated by empathy. This result shows that resilience was better mediated between humanity and friendship than empathy. Additionally, sex differences were found on empathy, but the differences were not found on resilience. The results revealed that the adolescents who scored high on humanity were better at friendship and when the higher humanity score was, the higher level of resilience was found, and this had an indirect effect on friendship quality.

  • This study examined the associations among self-disclosure tendency, self-activities and friends' responses on Facebook, and perceived usefulness of Facebook in social networking. Sex differences were also examined. Results showed that participants' self-disclosure tendency was positively related to their activities in Facebook, which were strongly related to friends-activities. Self- and friends-activities significantly increased usefulness in social networking. Regarding sex differences, the relationships between self-disclosure tendency and self-activities and between self-activities and usefulness were stronger for men, while the relationship between friends-activities and usefulness was stronger for women. These results suggest women tend to value friends' responses more in assessing relational qualities than men in Facebook contexts.
