Modified dental anxiety scale(MDAS) and Dental fear survey(DFS) were used as measurement, where through the mean and the standard deviation were worked out and also the T-test and ANOVA were performed. In relation to MDAS, females and males showed the mean, '$2.86{\pm}0.06$' and '$2.49{\pm}0.06$' (p=0.000). Also, less than 20 and more than 21 showed the mean, '$2.81{\pm}1.01$' and '$2.61{\pm}0.99$' (p=0.023). In relation to dental utilization behavior, the subjects were classified into three groups, a group who uses dental clinics periodically, a group who uses them only when problems arise, and a group who has not ever used them. MDAS indicated a higher value in the group who use dental clinics only when problems arise, which was significant statistically (p=0.000). In the case of MDAS, many respondents answered that they felt anxious in the process of actual treatment; in the case of DFS, they felt anxious due to the factors that cause irritation.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the accessibility to dental facilities and the differences in chief complaints of new patients who visited Pusan National University Dental Hospital. We collected information from electronic medical records for 1,820 new patients. The accessibility was analyzed by measuring the distance from the patient's house to the dental facilities. The distance was categorized into 10 km sections, and the presence or absence of a local pediatric dental clinic within 10 km of the patient's house was also categorized. As the distance between the house and Pusan National University Dental Hospital increased, the proportion of patients who visited for dental caries decreased, and orthodontic treatment increased. Dental caries accounts for 27.9% of less than 10 km and 20.5% over 30 km. Orthodontic treatment accounts for 25.4% within 10 km and 27.3% more than 30 km away. The presence or absence of a local pediatric dental clinic within 10 km did not significantly affect the distribution of chief complaints. This study can be used as basic research data to establish effective treatment measures that can improve the physical and geographical accessibility of patients visiting pediatric dentistry.

The Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service provided data on patients who visited medical institutions. It was categorized according to year, sex, age, insurance type, dental institution, and region. Chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests, and one-way analyses of variance were performed. Statistical analyses were performed using SAS software (ver. 9.2; SAS Institute, Cary, NC, USA). Amoxicillin and cephalosporins, the most commonly used antibiotics, accounted for approximately 96% of the prescriptions. The younger the child, the more antibiotics were prescribed for trauma, pulpitis, and dental abscesses. However, closer to adolescence, the antibiotics were primarily prescribed to manage impacted teeth and periodontal problems. Antibiotics were prescribed for 3.13 days on average. There were significant differences in the prescription rates according to age, sex, type of insurance, type of medical institution, and region (p < 0.05). This study suggested that antibiotic prescriptions should be closely monitored to ensure appropriate usage of antibiotics.

Twenty one representative dental hospitals in Korea were selected by the selection criteria. A questionnaire was implemented to measure awareness, perceived needs, educations, conferences, works, activating/obstructive factors and satisfaction related to QI activities. Satisfaction score range from 0 (lowest) to 5 (highest) among 329 dental hygienists who worked in the selected 21 dental hospitals. Implementation rate of programs on external customer satisfaction was the highest 59.9% in QI activities, and reduction of expenses (59.4%), Improvement in health care quality (58.7), risk management (52.8) were followed, while improvement in work efficiency (46.5) showed the lowest implementation rate. The most influencing factor accelerating QI activities was 'active participation of hospital workers' (54.7%), and 'effort to improve customer satisfaction' (44.7%) followed. The most influencing QI related obstructive factor was 'lack of QI-related manpower and support' (47.1%). A balanced development including QI programs with lower implementation rates is necessary. Encouraging participation of workers may be the most important in developing dental QI activities further.
