The sedimentary siderite rock or siderostone has been firstly found from the upper part of the Cambrian Myobong Slate in the Sangdong Tungsten Mine area. It occurs as layers between slate and calc-silicate rock (originally siliceous ankerite rock and ferroan dolostone) or within calc-silicate rock. Some parts of the siderostone bed, however, are considerably skarnized to iron-rich skarns, leaving only small-scaled relics. Siderostone consists mainly of siderite and quartz with minor amount of bertioerine and fluorite or apatite and is commonly microcrystalling granular in texture. Stratification is well developed in some siderstone. The siderostone and its skarnized rocks occasionally contain scheelite grains. Siderite also occurs in sandstone and slate. Mineralogy and textures of the siderostone suggest that it might be formed in the shallow marine basin where enough organic matter was present to maintain a low Eh and iron was supplied, and that siderite might be formed largely by diagenesis from iron-rich berthierine mud.

In order to reveal formation factors and developmental processes of tafoni this study was conducted with petrological analysis including microscopic observation, measurement of water content and water analysis at Golgulsa temple in Gyeongju, South Korea. The direction of the entrance to tafoni at Golgulsa temple tends to coincide with the direction of slope, and this is thought to be related to the direction of wind flow and water supply. Tafoni's initial developmental processes is judged to have grown as a result of a breakaway of rock fragments along with beddings and cracks in rock. Then, tafoni have been enlarged along at the spots that sufficiently accommodate water supply depending on the direction of wind. The results of water analysis of the stagnant water in gnamma implies that a high meltage of Na and Cl compared to other inland areas can be from the adjacent shore. The effects of such saline substances on rock weathering and development of taponi are currently under way through electronic microscopy and geochemical analysis.
Cheongryangsan area ($49.51km^2$) has been designated as the Provincial Park in 1982, because it has magnificent aspect and seasonally spectacular landscapes. Especially, Cheongryangsa sitey ($4.09km^2$) has been designated as Noted Scenery No. 23 in 2007, because it has the same topographical landscape as rock cliffs, rock peaks and caves. The most spectacular landscapes are exhibited in the Cheongryangsan Conglomerate and Osipbong Basalt. There are twelve rock peaks on the ridges of the two strata, and many rock cliffs in the several valleys of strata, in which a few caves are formed by differential weathering and erosion. The valleys, in which flow Cheongryang, Bukgok and Cheonae streams, are classified as fault valleys along WNW-ESE faults. The rock cliffs were generated from vertical joints parallel to WNW-ESE faults in the two strata, and the caves were formed by differential weathering and erosion along bedding of sandstones and shales intercalated in the conglomerates. The rock peaks are landscapes formed by differential erosion along crossed vertical joints in the ridges. The vertical joints are developed subparallel to two WNW-ESE faults and a NNE-WWS fault. Therefore the topographical features are caused by existence of the faults and Lithologic difference in the Cheongryangsan Conglomerate and Osipbong Basalt, and by differential weathering and erosion along them.
The Myeonbongsan caldera, 10.2X8.0 km, developed within older sequences of sedimentary formations and intermediate composition volcanis in the southern Cheongsong area. Volcanic rocks in the caldera block include lower intermediate volcanics, middle tuffaceous sequences and upper silicic ones. The silicic volcanics, which is named Myeonbongsan Tuff, are composed of crystal-rich ash-flow tuff(300 m) , bedded tuff(30 m) and pumice-rich ash-flow tuff(700 m) in ascending order. Several intrusions dominate the early sequences within the caldera. The caldera collapsed in a trapdoor type when silicic ash-flow tuffs erupted fro major vent area in the caldera. Normal faulting along a ring fault system except the southwestern part dropped the tuffs down to the northrase with a maximum displacement of about 820 m. The Myeonbongsan Tuff is just about 1,030 m thick inside the northeastern caldera, with its base not exposed, and southwestward thinning down. Rhyolitic plug and ring dikes are emplaced along the central vent and the caldera margins, and the ring dikes are cut by plutonic stocks in the southeastern and northwestern parts. The caldera volcanism eviscerated the magma chamber by a series of explosive eruptions during which silicic magma was erupted to form the Myeonbongsan Tuff. Following the last ash-flow eruption, collapse of the chamber roof resulted in the formation of the Myeonbongsan caldera, a subcircular trapdoor-type depression subsiding about 820 m deep. After the collapse, stony to flow-banded rhyolites were emplaced as circular plugs and ring dikes along the central vent and the caldera margins respectively. Finally after the intrusions, another plutons were emplaced as stocks outside the caldera.
More than 650 numbers of water well ranging in depth from 100M to 200M were installed in South Korean Penninsula during the last decade for the purpose of industrial use and municipal water supply. Those data were compiled and synthesized by writer to determine their hydrogeologic occurences in accordance with their geologic and areal characteristics. Rocks yielding the deep seated ground water beared in the geologic primary and secondary porosities are classified into 6 groups according to their geologic, hydrogeologic, and topographic characteristics, that are: volcanic, sedimentary, meta-sediment and/or schist, andesitic, gneissic, and granitic rocks. The order of ground water productivity of the groups is as written above. Even granitic rocks including porphyries, granite, and intermediate and basic plutonic rocks is considered to be the most poorest ground water yielding group among 6, it's average yield form a single well with average drilling depth of 116M is about 225 cubic meters per day if it's drilling site is properly located. Generally speaking, seizable geologic structures such as fractured, sheared, and faulted zone at the flat surface and valley center yield almost 310% more of deep seated bet rock ground water in comparision with minor structures of joints, bedding planes, and so on that are occured at high land. 50 numbers of water well drilled at crystalline rocks were specially checked and measured it's ground water yie 1ds at each drilled depth to determine each interval's productivity while hammer drilling was going on. The results indicate that the specific capacity and yield of each water well at a depth below 70M to 80M was almost neglegible. It means that optimum well depth of crystalline rocks, except the area having seizable geologic structures, shall be not deeper than 80M.
Ores of the Jeonnam pyrophyllite province mainly consist of not only pyrophyllite but also kaolinite, and they usually contain minor amounts of muscovite and quartz. We usually call them as porcelaneous stones which usually show lower grade characteristics in the viewpoint of Korean nonmetallic industries. Mineralogical studies for the ores and their intimate formations revealed that another kind of clay minerals could have been produced from the volcanic sediments with similar ages and compositions. Corundum is commoner than the diaspore in the pyrophyllite deposits, and so diaspore can be regarded as one of temporary minerals from which corundum would be finally formed. Kaolinite deposits contain neither diaspore nor corundum, but alunites produced by an advanced argillic alteration are often observed in the upper portions of the kaolin ores. The lowest formation interbedded with pyrophyllite and/or kaolinite ores usually contain purple tuff bed on the uppermost part, and in ascending order, siliceous formation, fine ash tuff and lapillistone are found in the study areas. As ages are becoming younger, amounts of pyrophyllite and kaolinite are radically decreased, or disappeared completely. On the other hand, content of muscovite is slightly increased, and those of plagioclase feldspars and quartz are found to have been preserved from the original rocks during alteration process. Most of ore bodies show rather well bedded formations which are easily discernable in the outcrops, but more effective discremination is desirable where rather massive ores exist. Siliceous beds and purple tuff ones on the upper part of ore bodies would be useful as marker horizons or key beds which have distinct lithologies and extensions.
The grain size of clastic sedimentary rocks classifies the rock types and also causes of anisotropy of the rock. The anisotropy is one of the most important factors that dominates the strength and weathering behavior of rocks. The anisotropy of clastic sedimentary and igneous rocks in the Gyeongsang Basin including Yeongju, Daegu, and Busan were analyzed by magnetic susceptibility expressed by the degree of anisotropy and shape parameter. As the results of the study, the sandstone deposited under lacustrine environment unaffected by the external force shows 1.03 degree of anisotropy. The degrees of anisotropy of the rocks affected by faults and fault rocks show 1.06 and 1.14, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility of rocks is to decrease with the distance from the fault. A fresh mudstone and shale formed by fines show a similar magnitude of the degree of anisotropy to fault rock and correspond to oblate shape parameter due to their sedimentary structure. Due to these reasons, we need attention in design, construction, and maintenance of a structure constructed in mudstone and shale.
The Neolithic relics containing sedimentary deposits have been found in the Moonamni coastal zone of the East Sea, Korea. The purpose of this research is to establish the late Quaternary stratigraphy of the coastal dune deposit and to elucidate its depositional environment of the Neolithic-site sediments on the basis of analytical properties of grain size population and mineralogy of the sediments. As a result, the vertical sections of the sediments from three trenches are characterized by three major stratigraphic depositional units of Unit 3, Unit 2 and Unit 1 in ascending order. Unit 3 and 2 can be further divided into tow sub-units. Unit 3 is composed of massive sands in the lower part and muddy sand in the upper part. It is considered that the Unit 3 is a typical dune deposit showing well-sorted sands. Unit 2 is characterized by the cross-bedding, and include archaeological remains such as pottery shards. This unit can be further divided into two sub-units of muddy sand in the lower part and sand in the upper part. Unit 1 occupies the top section and consists of modem dune sediment. The Neolithic cultural remains would be accumulated in the coastal dune area in relation to dynamic condition of beach system under the high stand of Holocene sea-level at about 7,800∼6,500 yr B.P. or so.

The purpose of this study is to develop a science field study area using Geumgang(Geum River), fossil origins and various geological resources in Youngdong area of Chungcheongbuk-do as educational resources; and utilize them to develop an education program to cultivate earth science and topophilia. The Youngdong sedimentary basin (Cretaceous period) has a well-developed outcrop along the Geumgang and it is therefore easy to find various geological structures, plant fossils, and dinosaur fossils. Also, it has a distinct sedimentary structure, such as mud cracks, ripple marks and cross-bedding. Science field study area(6 observation sites) were developed based on school curriculum, textbook analysis, and professional earth science education panel discussion to create a convergence education program. The result of validating the developed program showed that all the items were satisfactory ($CVR{\geq}0.88$) in the test categories. The science field study teaching-learning model was applied to actual classes. The evaluation result for class satisfaction was positive, scoring Rickert scale 4.18. The result of observation about the outdoor classroom process in the science field study area revealed that students were able to form a new image of the beautiful scenery of the Geumgang. Also, the students could gain a new understanding, concept and value of various geological objects (sandy beach, stepping-stones, dinosaur footprint fossils, sedimentary formation), which naturally allowed them to form topophilia.
Back analysis has been used to evaluate the factor of safety and circular failure plane at the landfill failure site. However, the estimated circular failure plane by back analysis is quite different from what is observed in the field. Thus, this study was conducted to estimate an actual shear failure plane inside the ground which gives a more accurate failure plane. Cone penetration test (CPT), boring test, soft X-ray image scan, density logging, and ultrasonic logging were conducted at the field and laboratory. The result of CPT showed significantly lower cone resistance, pore pressure, and undrained shear strength at a particular part. This part is a possible shear failure plane inside the ground. To validate, the soft X-ray scan images were analyzed and found the disturbed (inclined) bedding plane induced by shear activity at the estimated shear failure plane. Density and ultrasonic logging tests also found a similar result. Thus, the method in this study is possible to estimate the shear failure plane inside the ground.
