Two-dimensional Analysis of MT Data across Northern Victoria, Australia (호주 북부 Victoria주 MT 탐사 자료의 2차원 해석)

  • MT soundings were carried out in 2008, in northern Victoria, Australia, as a continuing collaboration research of 2007 between Republic of Korea, Australia, and Japan. The main purpose of this research is to investigate electrical conductivity structure and thus help understanding of tectonic structure in central Victoria, which is believed to be closely linked to mineralization and magmatic processes of this region. The survey area is located in western Lachlan Fold Belts, which is the part of Tasman Fold Belts in southeastern Australia. An MT profile of 2008 is almost parallel to the one of 2007 and approximately 50 km away. The 2D inversion result of MT data also shows that the position of conductivity discontinuity near surface are well matched with the positions of major faults, such as Avoca Fault, which is the structural boundary between Stawell and Bendigo Zones, and Heathcote Fault Zone, which marks the boundary between Bendigo and Melbourne Zones. It is also confirmed from resistivity image that internal faults in Bendigo Zone are in listric form, which is implied to be formed by structural shortening during compressional orogenic activity in Silurian.

Effective 3-D GPR Survey for the Exploration of Old Remains (유적지 발굴을 위한 효율적 3차원 GPR 탐사)

  • Since the buried cultural relics are three-dimensional (3-D) objects in nature, 3-D survey is more preferable in archeological exploration. 3-D Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey based on very dense data in principle, however, might need much higher cost and longer time of exploration than other geophysical methods commonly used for the archeological exploration, such as magnetic and electromagnetic methods. We developed a small-scale continuous data acquisition system which consists of two sets of GPR antennas and the precise positioning device tracking the moving-path of GPR antenna automatically and continuously. Since the high cost of field work may be partly attributed to establishing many profile lines, we adopted a concept of data acquisition at arbitrary locations not along the pre-established profile lines. Besides this hardware system, we also developed several software packages in order to effectively process and visualize the 3-D data obtained by the developed system and the data acquisition concept. Using the developed system, we performed 3-D GPR survey to investigate the possible historical remains of Baekje Kingdom at Buyeo city, South Korea, prior to the excavation. Owing to the newly devised system, we could obtain 3-D GPR data of this survey area having areal extent over about $17,000m^2$ within only six-hours field work. Although the GPR data were obtained at random locations not along the pre-established profile lines, we could obtain high-resolution 3-D images showing many distinctive anomalies, which could be interpreted as old agricultural lands, waterways, and artificial structures or remains. This cast: history led us to the conclusion that 3-D GPR method is very useful not only to examine a small anomalous area but also to investigate the wider region of the archeological interests.

Determination of the Strike and the Dip of a Line Source Using Gravity Gradient Tensor (중력 변화율 텐서를 이용한 선형 이상체의 주향과 경사 결정)

  • In this paper, the automatic determination algorithm of strike and dip of a line source using gravity gradient on a single profile is proposed. In general, the gravity gradient tensor due to a line source has only two independent components because of its 2-Dimensional (2-D) characteristics. However, if the line source has the strike and dip regarding the observation profile, it comes to have five independent components. The proposed algorithm of the determination both strike and dip is based on the rotational transform that converts full gravity gradient tensor to reduced 2-D gravity gradient tensor. The least-square method is applied in order to find optimum rotational angles that make one of the row components minimalized simultaneously. The two synthetic cases of a line source are represented; one has strike only and the other has both strike and dip. This study finds that the automatic determination method using gravity gradient tensor can find directions of a line source in each case.

  • A flathead fish, collected from the water off Cheju lsland is tentatively identified as Inegocia guttata of the family Platycephalidae for the first time from Korea. Inegocia guttata is similar to Cymbacephalus beauforti in morphological characters, but differs from C. beauforti in lacking dermal flaps on eyes and having pored scales much fewer than oblique scales slanting backward and downward above the lateral line, single and tongue - like interopecular flap, nasal spines and circled blackish spots in the pectoral and ventral fins. A new Korean name, "Akoyangtae", is proposed for the I. guttata.

  • 하나의 측선에 대해 3점법으로 세 지점의 유속을 동시에 측정할 수 있는 장치를 고안하였으며, '다수심 유속계'라 명명하였다. 본 장치는 5단의 관절부를 이용하여 등수심을 유지하며, 표면에서 수심을 측정하는 동시에 피그미 유속계를 이용하여 3지점의 유속 (V0.2, V0.6, V0.8)을 취득할 수 있다. 다수심 유속계의 현장 적용 실험을 실시하였다. 프로펠러 유속계와 다수심 유속계를 이용하여 유량을 측정한 결과, 거의 유사한 유량을 확인할 수 있었다. 하지만 측정시간의 경우 프로펠러 유속계는 약 1시간, 다수심 유속계는 약 30분으로 약 2배에 가까운 차이를 확인할 수 있었다. 한편 현재 개발 단계에 있는 다수심 유속계는 25cm 이상의 수심에서 3점자료 취득이 가능함으로써 하천 형상에 따른 유체 흐름 파악에 적합하며, 관측 자료의 신뢰도 향상에 기여할 수 있다고 판단된다.

Investigation and Processing of Seismic Reflection Data Collected from a Water-Land Area Using a Land Nodal Airgun System (수륙 경계지역에서 얻어진 육상 노달 에어건 탄성파탐사 자료의 고찰 및 자료처리)

  • A land nodal seismic system was employed to acquire seismic reflection data using stand-alone cable-free receivers in a land-river area. Acquiring reliable data using this technology is very cost effective, as it avoids topographic problems in the deployment and collection of receivers. The land nodal airgun system deployed on the mouth of the Hyungsan River (in Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk Province) used airgun sources in the river and receivers on the riverbank, with subparallel source and receiver lines, approximately 120 m-spaced. Seismic data collected on the riverbank are characterized by a low signal-to-noise (S/N) and inconsistent reflection events. Most of the events are represented by hyperbola in the field records, including direct waves, guided waves, air waves, and Scholte surface waves, in contrast to the straight lines in the data collected conventionally where source and receiver lines are coincident. The processing strategy included enhancing the signal behind the low-frequency large-amplitude noise with a cascaded application of bandpass and f-k filters for the attenuation of air waves. Static time delays caused by the cross-offset distance between sources and receivers are corrected, with a focus on mapping the shallow reflections obscured by guided wave and air wave noise. A new time-distance equation and curve for direct and air waves are suggested for the correction of the static time delay caused by the cross-offset between source and receiver. Investigation of the minimum cross-offset gathers shows well-aligned shallow reflections around 200 ms after time-shift correction. This time-delay static correction based on the direct wave is found essential to improving the data from parallel source and receiver lines. Data acquisition and processing strategies developed in this study for land nodal airgun seismic systems will be readily applicable to seismic data from land-sea areas when high-resolution signal data becomes available in the future for investigation of shallow gas reservoirs, faults, and engineering designs for the development of coastal areas.

  • 홍수기 유량측정에 있어서 가장 큰 어려움이었던 유속측정의 정확성을 확보하고 실무자의 안전성을 보장하기 위한 기본 취지에서 1993년 시작된 "대하천 유량 자동측정 설비개발"이라는 연구 주제하에 비접촉식 유속측정 기법에 대한 연구를 수년간 연구개발을 거듭한 결과물인 전자파표면유속계를 1999년도에 상품화하여 현재 국내에서 홍수유속측정 설비로 이용되어지고 있다. 현장에서 유량측정업무에 종사하는 실무자들은 홍수유량측정에 비하여 훨씬 간편함을 몸소 느끼게 되었고, 상품화보급이 시작된지 수년이 지난 상태에서는 더욱 성능이 개선된 전자파표면유속계가 개발되기를 기대하였다. 무엇보다도 홍수기에 유량측정시 기존의 유속측정 방법과 같은 방식으로 각 측선마다 전자파표면유속계를 설치해야하는 번거로움을 피력하였다. 기존의 전자파표면유속계는 하천을 가로지르는 교량위에서 흐름방향에 나란히 측정하는 조건을 고려하였기 때문에 이와 같은 편각인 상태의 유속측정은 검토하지 않았다. 이와 같은 사용자의 요구에 대하여 한국수자원공사에서는 홍수기 유량측정시의 사용자 편의성을 증대하기 위하여 성능개선 작업에 착수하여 편각측정용 전자파표면유속계를 개발하였다. 편각측정의 주된 목적은 전자파표면유속계를 모든 측선에 설치하지 않고 한 지점에서 편각(oblique angle)으로 여러 측선의 유속을 측정함으로써 유속측정의 효율성을 증대시키는 것이다. 전자파표면 유속계에서의 편각 측정은 하천의 유속 방향을 기준으로 정면에서 측정하면 수평 편각이 0도가 되며 좌우로 안테나를 회전하여 움직인 각도가 측정 편각으로 결정된다. 전자파의 물리적 특성 때문에 편각이 증가하면 반사된 신호의 수신 크기가 감소하여 측정이 불가능하게 된다. 이러한 문제를 최대한 극복하는 것이 본 연구의 중점 개선사항이다. 이를 통하여 전자파표면유속계를 교량의 임의 지점에 설치하여 좌우로 편각 $20^{\circ}$에 이르는 범위의 유속을 측정하고자 목표로 하였다. 홍수시의 현장 측정 환경은 열악하기 때문에 정확한 측정을 조건으로 측정자에게 최대한의 편리함과 신속한 측정 환경을 제공해야 효과적인 업무수행이 가능하다. 이러한 편각 측정을 가능토록 하기 위해서는 유속측정시 송신되는 전자파의 출력을 기존의 시스템보다 보다 높게 발사하여야 하며 안테나의 수신감도 및 지향성이 개선되어야 한다. 이를 위해서 안테나 형태에 있어 기존 전자파표면유속계와의 차이점은 기존안테나는 파라볼릭 형상이었으나 신규 제작된 안테나는 평면안테나로 이러한 형태의 개선를 통해 안테나 특성 및 구조적인 차이를 유도하였다. 두 가지 안테나 사양 각각 장단점이 있으나 가장 큰 차이점은 빔폭 특성에서 평면 안테나가 우수하며 수신 감도를 향상시킬 수 있다는 강점이 있다. 특히 Tx/Rx 분리의 평면안테나 구조는 파라볼릭 안테나에서 불가능한 기능으로서 편각측정으로 인한 수신감도의 저하의 문제를 해결하기 위한 개선조치이었다. 성능개선 제작된 편각측정용 전자파표면유속계를 이용하여 일반하천의 홍수유속에 대한 편각측정 실험을 안성천에서 실시한 결과 유속 약 1.7 m/s 인 상황에서 편각 $20\;^{\circ}$ 까지 편각 $0\;^{\circ}$일때와 유사한 측정 성능을 보였다.

  • To change rail tracks from main track to another track, it needs a device that is called the turnout point. If the point which is composed of accurate parts and complex sensors does not work, And also, serious problems will be arisen. However, there are serious problems by the failure of the point. In this paper, after analyzing the failures of the conventional points, a new point is suggested. The proposed point is not affected by the surge caused by lightning.

Cable-free Seismic Acquisition System (무선 탄성파 탐사 시스템)

  • Cable-free seismic technology is to acquire seismic data with independent receivers which are not connected by cables. This is an effective method for survey designs with less topographical conditions. With technology advancement for cable-free receivers, reliable data quality, easy deployment, and picking up the receivers, the cable-free technology has begun to apply to land seismic acquisition. In this study we introduced a cable-free seismic system and its equipment. We tried to build up the cable-free seismic technology through the field application. In the seismic tomography field applications, the seismic signals of the cable-free receiver and cabled receiver with the same distance from the source show the same phase in early stage. The difference of the first arrival times between two signals is less than 0.4 ms, which could be accepted. In the field application for seismic reflection exploration, we acquired shot gathers with different source depth and dynamite charge. The shot gathers from cable-free and cabled system are similar to each other. With an efficient method for receiver deployment and survey design, the application of the cable-free technology will increase.

New Record of the Two Carangid Fishes (Perciformes, Carangidae) from Korea (한국산 전갱이과 어류 2 미기록종)

  • Two specimens of Decapterus macrosoma Bleeker and Carangoides orthogrammus (Jordan et Gilbert) were collected separately from the south-eastern sea of Cheju island and Cheju fish market in September, 1998. We named "Gin-ga-ra-ji" for D. macrosoma and "No-rang-jeom-muni-yu-jeon-gaeng-i" for C. orthogrammus since they are first recorded in the Korean waters. D. macrosoma shows some differences like the extent of scales on its dorsal head, the number of scutes, the shape of lateral line, and the length of pectoral fin in comparison of those of same genus. C. orthogrammus is characterized in having high body depth, scutes located on the straight lateral line, a few number of the yellow spot on the side of body, elongated rayon the front end of 2nd dorsal and anal fin, and the area of no scales in the base of breast.
