  • MEMS(micro electro-mechanical systems) inertial switch which is applicable to the ignition Safe-Arm- Unit of propulsion system is devised. The MEMS inertial switch is designed according to the general design procedure for conventional mechanical elements. Unlikely conventional MEMS accelerometer, threshold inertial switching mechanism is adopted which makes a MEMS element an abrupt switching in a certain acceleration level. By comparing the design data and test results of the specimen a small discrepancy in switching acceleration level is found which is presumably due to the nonlinear characteristics of the beam spring and the flexure hinge which are the main parts of the MEMS inertial switch.

  • In the present study, the amount of slow drift motion damping of shuttle tanker in still water and various environments is measured through free decay model test. Although the estimation of slow drift damping is essential in analysing slow drift motion of moored FPSO or DP controlled shuttle tanker, it is difficult to predict damping accurately by theoretical analysis. The estimation of drift damping depends on model test mostly. Through the model test, the amount of slow drift damping is measured and the effects of environments and thruster action on drift damping are investigated. The measured damping characteristics are expected to be used in the analysis on slow drift motion of moored vessel.

  • Numerical study is carried out to investigate flow characteristics around an axisymmetric body with and without an integrated propulsor. The incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equations are also solved using the finite volume method and the standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model for turbulence closure. In order to investigate the propulsor-hull interaction, the induced velocity calculated by surface panel methods is utilized for the boundary condition at the propeller plane. The calculated results are compared to the experimental results. It is considered that the present numerical code can be used for design of an integrated propulsor.

  • In general the data such as thrust, pressure, temperature and combustion time are measured in developing the propulsion system of solid rocket motor through static firing test. But in the case of personal surface to air missile there are required a severe safety specifications in order to eliminate gunner hazard from the exhaust plume of motors. The safety requirements lead to the design of separation device and safety igniter device. The dynamic firing test for the designed two devices should be conducted under the flight environmental conditions to verify the requirements compliance. In this study the technique for dynamic firing test of propulsion system of personal surface to air missile is proposed and the method to design the dynamic test bench is also studied.

  • Recently, to reduce the noise and vibration levels of ships, high skewed marine propellers with thinner thickness are adopted widely, however, such propeller design trend causes to reduce the strength of blades. Propeller blades are rotating continuously in irregular wake field of ships. So, it is necessary to examine the strength of them precisely including from a viewpoint of fatigue strength. In present paper, the fatigue strength of propeller blades was investigated. Firstly, fatigue tests for Al Bronze, the representative propeller material, were carried out. The S-N curve was obtained for the assessment of the fatigue crack initiation life. And the material properties C, m for the fatigue crack propagation analysis based on the Paris' equation were derived. For the 2nd stage, the structural responses of propeller blades in irregular ship wake field was carried out using the finite element analysis code. And the fatigue strength of propeller blades were considered based on the calculated stress levels and material characteristics for fatigue strength.

  • The performance of the waterjet system of 180 ton class fishing guard ship has been experimentally studied. A waterjet propulsion system has many advantages in comparison with a conventional screw propeller especially for high speed craft because of its good cavitation performance. Recently waterjet system has been applied to fishing boats and fishing guard ship because of avoiding a net problem although their speeds are not so high. This paper describes experimental procedure and analysis method of resistance and self-propulsion tests with a 1/14.46-scale model. Experimental results were analyzed according to ITTC 96 standard method. The full-scale effective power and delivered power of the ship were also analyzed and the full-scale speed predicted from the model test results shows a good agreement with the full-scale result from the sea trial tests.

  • Thrust is one of the important performance characteristics of an AUV. At the design stage, the resistance of an AUV at its maximum speed is estimated and then the thrust system is designed, including the propeller diameter, propeller rpm, driving system, and required power. However, it is not possible to be certain that the thrust system has been correctly designed until the AUV is launched and its speed is measured. If data from a propeller open-water test is available, the thrust and torque of the propeller at a certain speed can be estimated. In addition, if the motor's torque characteristics are available, the maximum speed saturated by the induced propeller torque can be estimated. In this paper, an easy technique for estimating the maximum speed of an AUV will be shown, even in a case where additional resistance is gained from appendages not considered at the design stage. Furthermore, the thrust performance changes by adjusting the diameter of the propeller can be easily investigated.

  • A water jet propeller is a key component that generates propulsion during the start of a naval vessel. When failure or breakage occurs, the vessel cannot operate. Recently, a flow analysis and structural analysis were conducted to understand the cause of damage to a bolt on a water jet. In particular, the stress and strain acting on the fastening bolt (impeller shaft and tail shaft) were examined to determine the extent of misalignment between the impeller shaft and the tail shaft of the water jet propeller. The study determined that stress and strain were concentrated on the impeller shaft and the tail shaft bolt. The alignment of the propeller impeller shaft and the tail shaft increased significantly in response to the tail shaft bolt. Failure of the tail shaft bolt fastening can lead to misalignment between the impeller shaft and the tail shaft.

  • Many types of new Korean Firearms were developed during the reign of King Se Jong(1418$\sim$1450). After the Chong-Tong-Deung-Rok(1448), The Ju-hwa was renamed as the Sin-Gi-Jeon. There was four kinds of rocket propelled arrows : So(small), Chung(medium), Dae(large) and San-hwa(multiple bomblets)-Sin-Gi-Jeon. Dae-Sin-Gi-Jeon known to be the best and biggest of any rocket propelled arrows in the 15th century. This paper describes Yak-Tong(propellant case made by paper) of Dae-Sin-Gi-Jeon.

  • The cavitation noise of high-speed propellers was experimentally studied using new measurement device in KRISO cavitation tunnel. A series of cavitation noise tests were carried out for 6 propellers with various sections, loading distributions, and a different area ratio. From the experimental results, the noise characteristics for various cavitation patterns and the noise performance for a series of propellers were analyzed. These can be used for full-scale prediction study of the noise and optimum design of high-speed propellers.
