  • The requirements of the maximum shear reinforcement in the EC2-02 and CSA-04, which are developed based on the truss model, are quite different to those in the ACI-08 code and AIJ-99 code, which are empirical equations. The ACI 318-08, CSA-04, and EC2-02 codes provide an expression for the maximum amount of shear reinforcement ratio as a function of the concrete compressive strength, but Japanese code does not take the influence of the concrete compressive strength into account. For high strength concrete, the maximum amount of shear reinforcement calculated by the EC2-02 and CSA-04 is much greater than that calculated by the ACI 318-08. Ten RC beams having various shear reinforcement ratios were tested and their corresponding shear stress-shear strain curves and failure modes were compared to the predicted ones obtained by the current design codes.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally investigate the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams embedded with GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) plate with openings. In this study, the parameters include the shape of reinforcement, reinforcement area, and thickness and width of reinforcements. The test was performed on 9 specimens with shear spanto-depth ratio of 2.8. When the reinforcement area was varied, the GFRP plate showed 3.6 times greater shear strength than steel stirrup. The test result showed that shear strength increased as reinforcement area increased. Also, when the shape of a parallelogram GFRP plate was used, it showed higher shear strength than that with rectangular shape. Effect of thickness and width of reinforcement showed that shear capacity increased as width increased. For a comparison study, a calculation of the shear strength of reinforced beams with GFRP plate based on the ACI 318M-08 was compared with the test results. The test results were compared with the maximum shear reinforcement areas required by ACI 318M-08, CSA-04, and EC2-02 provision.

  • In this paper, deformation characteristics of fiber-mixed-soils were studied at small strain range(0.0001%~1%) using resonant column test and triaxial test, and reinforcement effect was evaluated by the measure of maximum shear moduli. The effects of the major parameters such as fiber content, aspect ratio and fiber type on reinforcement were comparatively assessed. The specimens were remolded from Jumunjin Sand randomly mixed with discrete polypropylene staple fibers. Maximum shear moduli of fiber-mixed-soils increased by up to 30% and modulus reduction was also restrained in nonlinear range. Shear moduli increased as the aspect ratio increases. The reinforcement was more effective with fibrillated fiber than with monofilament fiber. The most effective reinforcement was achieved with the specimen of 0.3 % fiber content.

  • The ACI 318-05 code requires the maximum amount of shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete (RC) beams to prevent possible sudden shear failure due to over reinforcement. The design equations of the maximum amount of shear reinforcement provided by the current four design codes, ACI 318-05, CSA-04, EC2-02, and JCI-99, differ substantially from one another. The ACI 318-05, CSA-04, and EC2-02 codes provide an expression for the maximum amount of shear reinforcement ratio as a function of the concrete compressive strength, but Japanese code does not take into account the influence of the concrete compressive strength. For high strength concrete, the maximum amount of shear reinforcement calculated by the EC2-02 and CSA-04 is much greater than that calculated by the ACI 318-05. This paper presents the effects of shear reinforcement ratio and compressive strength of concrete on the maximum shear reinforcement in reinforced concrete beams. Ten RC beams having various shear reinforcement ratio were tested. Although the test beams were designed to have much more amount of shear reinforcement than that required in the ACI 318-05 code, all beams failed due to web concrete crushing after the stirrups reached the yield strain.

  • The aim of this paper is to clarify the shear behavior of RC beams strengthened with channel-type Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) plates. Fourteen RC beams were specifically designed. All the beams were tested under four point bending and extensively instrumented to monitor strains, cracking, load capacity and failure modes. The structural response of all beams is then critically analyzed in terms of deformability, strength and failure processes. It is shown that with channel-type Fiber Reinforced Polymer(FRP) plates, a brittle debonding failure of beams bonding FRP in the concrete surface can be transformed to an almost ductile failure with well-defined enhancement of structural performance in terms of both deformation and strength.

  • The requirement of the maximum yield strength of shear reinforcement in the KCI-07 code is quite different to those in the ACI-08 code, EC2-02, CSA-04, and JSCE-04 codes. Eighteen RC beams having high strength shear reinforcement were tested. Test results indicated that even if the yield strength of shear reinforcement in beams was much greater than the maximum yield strength required by the KCI-07 design code, the shear reinforcement of these beams reached their yield strains. Furthermore, the shear strengths of tested beams increased almost linearly with the increase of the amount of shear reinforcement. In addition, larger numbers of diagonal cracks developed in the web of the beam having greater yield strength than the beams having lower yield strength of shear reinforcement. The maximum crack width of the beam having high strength shear reinforcement was approximately the same to the crack with of the beam having normal strength shear reinforcement.

  • The paper describes m experimental study on the shear strengthening of concrete beams with exposed wire rope. The strengthening method is using the mechanical bolting of wire rope tensioned on the exterior of beam section. There are two shear strengthening types. The first is closed type wrapped beam section with wire rope like as closed stirrup. The second is U type tensioned at the anchor located in the side of beam section. The main parameters of specimens are strengthening spacings of wire rope with 150, 200, and 250mm for the closed and U type respectively. The shear span ratio of specimens applied by 3-point loading is 4. The results showed that the ultimate shear strength and ductility of strengthened beams increased significantly compared with non-strengthened beams. Especially, the strengthening effect of closed type was very preferable to U type. Therefore, the shear strengthening method with wire rope is very reasonable in view of repair and rehabilitation of beams.

  • The current Korean Concrete Design Code(KCI Code) requires the minimum and maximum content of shear s in order to prevent brittle and noneconomic design. However, the required content of the steel reinforcement In KCI Code is quite different to those of the other design codes such as fib-code, Canadian Code, and Japanese Code. Furthermore, since the evaluation equations of the minimum and maximum shear reinforcement for the current KCI Code were based on the experimental results, the equations can not be used for the RC members beyond the experimental application limits. The concrete tensile strength, shear stress, crack inclination, strain perpendicular to the crack, and shear span ratio are strongly related to the lower and upper limits of shear reinforcement. In this research, an evaluation equation for the minimum content of shear reinforcement is theoretical proposed from the Wavier's three principals of the mechanics of materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate shear strengthening effects and behaviour of RC beams strengthened in shear by Carbon Fiber Mesh(CFM) and mortar for fixing CFM to concrete. Test parameters in experiment are shear span-to-depth ratio, layout of CFM and number of clip. From the test, it was shown that the governing failure patten was the bond failure between cover mortar and RC beam initiated at about 60% of maximum strength. And the strength of CFM was developed up to 19.6% of it's maximum tensile strength when the specimen reached to failure. The most effective enhancement using CFM and mortar were to attach CFM diagonally to concrete in a/d of 1.0 and increase the number of cilps in a/d of 1.5, respectively.

  • In this study, deep beam specimens are designed to have the effective shear span to depth ratio 1.0 and web opening within effective shear region. The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the shear strengthening effect between before failure and after failure upon using fiber sheets for RC deep beam with opening in web. The results can be summarized as follows; 1)When deep beams with web opening were failed in shear, their initial diagonal crack load and crack width were not influenced by their types of the arranged steel bars. 2)Deep beam with the horizontal reinforced bar was effective in the ultimate load of deep beam with web opening in shear failure 3)There were the approximate values between the experimental values and the analysis of finite element method. 4)The ultimate failure strengths of the repaired and strengthened specimens were increased about 34.4%~83.8% in comparison with specimens not to be strengthened.
