  • The generation of artificial accelerograms considering the characteristic of earthquakes in the Korean peninsula for a time history analysis of structures is accomplised by the stochastic method. The engineering data such as a representative shape of envelope function and an effective duration are investigated from the instrumental records. The maximum ground acceleration value is based on seismic zoning map which are constructed for the Korean peninsula. The acceleration-time histories are generated for two different types of earthquake motions and two types of soil conditions. In the study, the maximum ground acceleration value of 0.2 g and effective durations of 24 seconds are used. The validity of the artificial accelerograms is obtained by the comparison with the required envelope functions and the design response spectrum.

  • A probabilistic seismic risk in the Korean Peninsula is calculated from the instrumental eaathquake data. For the purpose, an instrumental earthquake catalogue since 1905 m which parameters are readjusted to have uniformity and homogeneity in description is cornpiled through the review of all available data. The maximum potential earthquake expected in the Korean Peninsula for 100, 1000, and 4000 years are estimated to be 6.3, 7.2 and 7.8 in magnitude, respectively, from Gumbel's extreme value theory. In addition, contour rnaps representing the maximum ground acceleration expected for 100 and 1000 years are prepared using the return period method. Seismic hazart] curves in which maximum ground acceleration expressed in terms of probability of occurrence are also presented for the major populated areas.

  • The purpose of the study was to create a probabilistic seismic hazard map using the input data that reflected the seismo-tectonic characteristics of the Korean Peninsula by applying USGS program (Harmsen (2008). The program was partly modified for the purpose of this study. The uncertainty of input parameters given by specialists was reflected in calculating the seismic hazard values by logic tree method. The general pattern of PGA was quite sensitive and similar to the shape of areal source. The probabilistic seismic hazard map showed the contour distribution of peak acceleration (%g) with 10% probability of exceedance in 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 250, and 500 years. The result showed that the peak ground acceleration (PGA) values of the northern peninsula were almost half values of the southern peninsula except Hwanghae province. The general trend of the hazard map extended in the direction of NW-SE from Whanghae province to south-eastern regions of the peninsula. The values in northern part of Kangwon province were relatively lower than other areas in the southern peninsula. The maps produced through this study are considered valuable in regulating the seismic safety of the major facilities in the Korean Peninsula.

  • A series of nurmerical analysse for the earhtquake of Iran railway tunnles under construction by NATM(New Astrian Tunnelling Method) were careid out throuth a pseudo-dynamic analyses techique used in a FFM computer program, DWTAP(Daewoo Tunnel Analysis Program), and the results are described in the paper. The analyses were performErl for two case;one is for the primary supports and the other is for the rompletEd permanent roncrete lining. The horizontal and verical groW1d accelerations for the design were estimatEd as 0.34 g and 0.23 g, respectively based on the historical reismic rerords in the proj3et area and the empirical equations. The results show that the turmel would be safe W1der the anticipitOO earthquake motion with the permanent roncrete lining, but some minor cracks rnigt be developErl in the primary shotcrete lining without any significant structural damages.

  • In modern society, the elderly over 65 years old are increasing due to development of medical technology and improvement of their standard of living. Severe fall of the elderly can lead to death threats. To solve this problem, several algorithms and hardware systems for fall detection have been studied and developed. In this paper, a fall detection system using 3-axial acceleration sensor is presented. In the fall detection system, several types of fall-feature parameters are calculated and then the fall is determined by using them. Using this system, best sensitivity and specificity are 98.3% and 94.7%, respectively.

  • We have constructed an acceleration sensor which is based on the maximum magnetic induction changes of amorphous wire as a measurand. The frequency bandwith of the constructed sensor depends on the mass of a sensing element. For $Co_{72.5}Si_{12.5}B_{15}$ amorphous wire, the bandwith is DC-700 Hz for $1{\times}10^{-3}kg$ sensing element and DC-200 Hz for $5{\times}10^{-3}kg$. The linearity of the acceleration sensor was less than 1% within the acceleration of 5 g.

  • The maximum and mean acceleration rates of vehicles estimated from the stopping conditions at signalized intersections provided an important clue to analyze traffic accident investigation when there was a dispute about legal liability such as first entering vehicle at the intersection, etc. This paper provided the maximum and mean acceleration rates of vehicles reflecting current traffic conditions in Korea through field studies. The mean acceleration rates of vehicles at stopline were measured up to 50m at the intervals of 5m. Results showed that the mean acceleration rate for bus was found to be $1.011^m/s^2{\sim}1.314^m/s^2$(0.1g~0.13g), and for passenger car was $1.548^m/s^2{\sim}1.818^m/s^2$(0.16g~0.19g). Statistical test results indicated that the observed differences from vehicle types and vehicle positions were statistically significant for the all ranges tested. It is expected that the accuracy of accident investigation practice will be improved by applying the acceleration rate values presented in this paper.

  • One of the most significant requisite that should be considered for effective rapping of the electrostatic precipitator using electromagnetic vibration exciter is vibration acceleration and resonance frequency of collecting plates. This vibration acceleration shows its peak points when natural frequencies of the system are corresponded with excitation frequency from the power source, and effective rapping performance can be expected. In this research, extend view of single electrostatic precipitator using one electromagnetic vibration exciter, the system was remodeled by arrangement of the exciters in view of multiple modules of the electrostatic precipitator in fields. And vibration acceleration measurement experiment is performed and measured values are compared with these remodeled systems. By this experimental comparison in series and parallel arrangement, effectiveness of arrangement methods for the electromagnetic vibration exciter, expected rapping performance, and power consumption are verified.

  • Ships in a seaway will encounter dangerous situation, such as slamming, stranding, and capsizing. The number of capsizing is small, but the loss due to them is very large from the viewpoint of human life, property, and the environmental pollution. The number of capsizing of fishing vessels is about 62% of total number of capsizing, and the half of them is originated from the operational mistake in a seaway. So the dynamics and the capsizing phenomena are to be studied, and the guide for the safe operation of a fishing vessel in a seaway are to be specified. The hydrodynamic forces consist of radiation forces (which are due to the motion of a ship), Froude-Krylov forces (which is due to the incoming waves), and diffraction forces (which is due to the wave and ship interaction). These forces are calculated by well-known strip method. Using the calculated forces, the motion of a ship in a regular sea is obtained. In the real seaway, the waves are very irregular, therefore the statistical analysis is very helpful. In this paper, using the results of the motion in a regular seaway and the wave spectrum, the motion in a irregular seaway are obtained and analyzed.
