  • The tactile force sensor was studied using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). The FBG is able to multiplex easily and is immune to electromagnetic environment. A sensor frame was designed to a cantilever beam type. Strain of a beam is related with the peak shift of a bragg wavelength. Finite Element Method (FEM) was used for getting an appropriate thickness from 0.2 mm to 0.3 mm thick. FEM results showed that 0.3 mm thick was suitable for the force range 10 N. The force resolutions of 0.039 N and 0.113 N were obtained with optical spectrum analyser and tunable Fabry-Perot filter, respectively.

  • Injured peoples usually care their body at medical institutions. But if they need some more rehabilitation to the affected area thus exist. These medical institutions according to the scale there are significant differences in rehabilitation programs, most of the small-scale rehabilitation program for medical doctors and patients to be progression of the conversation is an issue. In this paper, in a small medical facility rehabilitation to assist in the accuracy and reliability, physical contact and force sensors that can measure a combination of substitution and the tactile sensor and tactile sensor alternative with a similar function is proposed. Perceptron neural networks by applying the contact evaluation according to the algorithm to determine the pattern is applied.

  • This paper describes the flexible force sensor using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and silicone rubber for the tactile sensation to detect the distributed normal force. The newly designed FBG flexible force has simple structure and can be easily multiplexed with simple wiring compared with the other electric mechanical sensors. We designed the flexible silicone rubber transducer and found the optimum embedding position of FBG in the transducer using the finite element analysis. This flexible force sensor has good performance and is immunity to the electromagnetic field compared with any other kinds of small force sensors for tactile sensation.

  • The poling characteristics of PVDF (poly(vinylidene fluoride)) film was investigated by measuring the electric voltage generated by the external load for the distributed tactile sensor applications. The poling conditions for the PVDF films were controlled by changing temperature and electric field, and the resulting crystal structure of the $\beta$-phase crystal was confirmed by FT-IR, DSC, and XRD experiments. The $\beta$-phase crystal was increased with the poling temperature and poling voltage, and subsequently the permittivity of the Poled PVDF films was increased. Finally, the prototype tactile sensor was tested by a 8 $\times$ 8 may circuit exhibiting high voltage signal for the highly poled PVDF films.

  • In this paper, we design a gripping force control system using tactile sensor to prevent slip when gripper tries to grasp and lift an object. We use a flexible tactile sensor for measuring uniplanar pressure on gripper's finger and develop an algorithm to detect the onset of slip using the sensor output. We also use a flexible pressure sensor to measure the normal force. In addition, various signal processing techniques are used to reduce noise included in the sensor output. A 3-finger gripper is used to grasp and lift up a cylindrical object. The tactile sensor is attached on one of fingers, and sends output signals to detect slip. Whenever the sensor signal is similar to the slip pattern, gripper force is increased. In conclusion, this research shows that slip can be detected using the tactile sensor and we can control gripping force to eliminate slip between gripper and object.

  • This paper proposes the physical human-robot interaction method that controls the robot arms using ITO touch panel sensor as the skin of robot. To implement physical human-robot interaction, the method of using the force/torque sensor and the method of using tactile sensor created by arranging small element type of sensor have been studied. However, these sensors have the pros and cons in terms of price and performance. This study aims to demonstrate the economy of element type sensor and the accuracy of force/torque sensor through experiment by proposing the method of physical interaction using the touch panel as the skin of robot, and by constructing overall system. The experiment was carried out for the method of controlling the robot arm by installing end-effecter and the method of controlling robot arm by creating the gesture with reference point on the touch panel. Through this experiment, the possibility of teaching control using the touch panel was confirmed.

  • In this paper we propose a method of determining the local curvature of a three dimensional convex object using the force and torque information obtained from the active touch of a robot hand. A technique for estimating two dimensional curvature of a convex object are introduced and the way of computing the three dimensional curvature from the two dimensional vurvatures is presented. Also, we develop an experimental system consisting of a finger and verify the effectiveness of the proposed method experimentally.

  • This paper proposes a surface recognition algorithm which determines the types of contact surfaces by fusing the information collected by the multisensor system, consisted of the optical tactile and force/torque sensors. Since the image shape measured by the optical tactile sensor system, which is used for determining the surface type, varies depending on the forces provided at the measuring moment, the force information measured by the f/t sensor takes an important role. In this paper, an image contour is represented by the long and short axes and they are fuzzified individually by the membership function formulated by observing the variation of the lengths of the long and short axes depending on the provided force. The fuzzified values of the long and short axes are fused using the average Minkowski's distance. Compared to the case where only the contour information is used, the proposed algorithm has shown about 14% of enhancement in the recognition ratio. Especially, when imposing the optimal force determined by the experiments, the recognition ratio has been measured over 91%.
