  • The purpose of this study is to examine how elementary pre-service teachers have a perception of 'science'. Especially, this study used photo-narrative method to analysis pre-service teachers' perception of 'science'. Photo-narrative is a way of describing what a study participant wants to say by taking a picture. Participants were 66 elementary pre-service teachers. The results of this study were as follows: First, elementary pre-service teachers used many words such as people, life, everyday as well as scientific terms such as phenomena and principles to explain science. Secondly, the pictures used by elementary pre-service teachers to explain science included household goods, natural phenomena, advanced devices, and living things. Third, elementary pre-service teachers explained science with knowledge of science, knowledge, convenience, and nature of science. As a result of this study, it was found that elementary pre-service teachers recognized that science is closely related to life and that it is necessary for learning. The results of this study can contribute not only to curriculum composition and curriculum content of elementary and middle school science education but also to curriculum development for teacher training.

  • This study developed a field trip program called "Planning a science exhibition" and explored elementary science-gifted students' perceptions of the program and learning experiences influencing them. To this end, 56 elementary science-gifted students in grades 4-6 from in an university-affiliated science-gifted education institute in metropolitan area were selected to participate in the field trip program. After the program, the students answered a survey regarding their perceptions of the program. Additionally, 19 students were selected for group interviews to further explore their survey responses. Results showed that many elementary science-gifted students perceived the program positively in various cognitive and affective aspects. Some students also pointed out certain limitations of the program. Five interconnected learning experiences were identified as influencing the students' perceptions: "experiences fostering creativity", "non-residential camp-type project-based learning experiences", "self-directed learning experiences", "experiences utilizing digital devices", and "collaborative experiences". Educational implications regarding these results were discussed.

  • This study was to analyze science process skills related to 'state of matter' and 'state change of matter' in the kindergarten, elementary and middle school science textbooks. On the base of articulation, we analyzed science textbooks of the 5th kindergarten curriculum, the 6th elementary school science curriculum and the 6th middle school science curriculum. The findings indicated that the scientific inquiry abilities of predicting, classifying, hypothesizing and designing investigations are not enough in all grade science textbooks. Also, while young children have measuring ability theoretically, it was represented only in high grade textbooks. We concluded that these were inappropriate from the viewpoint of articulation which is related to scientific inquiry ability.

  • Misconceptions are one of the most important and long-lasting studied themes on science education. It is because their nature is obstinate and settled as well as they corrupt students' understanding of science concepts. This study examines whether preservice elementary school teachers enrolled in biology teaching material research course changed positively on science teaching efficacy and correcting life science misconceptions when they used the handbook developed for this study. The handbook comprises 203 life science concepts surveyed among preservice teachers holding from advanced researches and arranged by 2007 Revised Science Curriculum. 107 preservice elementary school teachers participated in the study. Forty-six (46) of them were assigned to the experimental group and the other 61 to the control group. ANOVA was conducted for analyzing data. Science Teaching Efficacy Belief Instrument (STEBI) and the life science misconception test which was developed for this study, were administrated as assessing instruments for pretest and posttest. The experimental group, using the handbook, acquired higher scores in both tests on statistical significance level than the control group who were not using the handbook. The results indicate the handbook developed for correcting life science misconceptions for this study is effective in enhancing science teaching efficacy and correcting life science misconceptions.

  • The purposes of this study were to analyze the problems of elementary science instruction, especially in experiment and observation, and suggest the directions to improve current elementary science instruction in terms of teaching methods and strategies. Data from instructions implemented by 7 elementary teachers were used to extract the problem of elementary science instruction. According to the results of instruction observation, such problems as follows are identified: 1) shortage of discussion regarding results of students' activities, 2) insufficiency of interactions among teacher-student/student-student, 3) shortage of guidance for students on observation, 4) absence of explanation on apparatus, 5) teachers' insufficient knowledge on science, 6) inappropriate use of teacher-made worksheets. Desirable directions for the improvement of present elementary science instruction were proposed.

  • This study examined the topics that have appeared in the "Journal of Korean Elementary Science Education" over the past 50 years to identify the changes that have occurred in the Korean Society of Elementary Science Education. Latent Dirichlet allocation topic modeling was applied to 1,065 English abstracts from the first issue (1983) to 2021, from which 14 main topics were extracted. The meaning of each topic was then analyzed from its keywords and documents. Subsequently, to elucidate the topic trends, the topics' increase or decrease every three years was statistically examined through linear regression analysis. Based on the results, implications for developing and supporting elementary science education research in the future were discussed.

  • In an elementary school science teacher's guide, the guide in details that can help elementary school teachers with difficulties when preparing and conducting science classes are essential. To gain insights into the development of the 2022 revised curriculum elementary school science teacher's guide, it is necessary to investigate the perceptions and needs of elementary school teacher's guide in details. In this study, we developed a questionnaire by analyzing the components and design of an elementary school science teacher's guide in details to explore elementary school teachers' perceptions and needs. For this purpose, we first investigated elementary school teachers' perceptions of their needs, satisfaction, and the utilization of each component of the current guide in details. Next, we investigated teachers' needs regarding the specific components and design of a guide. The findings were as follows. First, elementary school teachers were delighted with the components that help them prepare and conduct lessons. Second, elementary school teachers wanted an easy-to-read design with a layout that allowed them to see the components they needed for their lessons at a glance. In conclusion, the elementary school science teacher's guide in details to be readable and organized to provide at-a-glance information on lesson preparation, lesson flow, and teaching and learning materials needed for science teaching-learning. Based on the results of this study, new approaches and attempts should be made to develop a textbook that elementary school teachers can utilize in the future.
