  • The purpose of this study was to investigate cognitive development and logical thinking formation levels of elementary gifted students and to compare with those of elementary regular students. For this purpose, 79 gifted elementary school students and 114 regular elementary school students in Kyunggi Province were participated, and GALT(Group Assessment of Logical Test) was administered to them. The results obtained in this study were as follows. First, the logical thinking scores of elementary gifted students were significantly higher than general students'(p<.05). Comparing the distribution of cognitive development level, elementary gifted students showed higher ratio in formal operation and lower ratio in concrete operation compared to the general students. It was interpreted that the cognitive development of gifted students preceded general students'. Second, analyzing according to the grade of elementary gifted students, logical thinking scores were significantly different between 5th graders and 6th graders(p<.05). Compared to 5th graders, logical thinking and formal operation ratio of 6th gifted graders showed significantly higher. The scores of four logical thinking areas except for conservational logic and correlational logic of 6th gifted graders showed significantly higher than 5th gifted graders'. Both 5th and 6th graders showed the highest formation ratio in combinational logic, and the lowest ratio in correlational logic. Third, logical thinking scores of gifted students according to gender did not show a significant difference(p>.05). The gifted boys reached formal operation more than gifted girls, but stayed more in the concrete operation. There was gender difference in correlational logic. The gifted girls showed significantly higher than gifted boys in correlational logic(p<.05).

  • This study was to analyze science process skills related to 'state of matter' and 'state change of matter' in the kindergarten, elementary and middle school science textbooks. On the base of articulation, we analyzed science textbooks of the 5th kindergarten curriculum, the 6th elementary school science curriculum and the 6th middle school science curriculum. The findings indicated that the scientific inquiry abilities of predicting, classifying, hypothesizing and designing investigations are not enough in all grade science textbooks. Also, while young children have measuring ability theoretically, it was represented only in high grade textbooks. We concluded that these were inappropriate from the viewpoint of articulation which is related to scientific inquiry ability.

  • The objective of the paper is to analyze the extent to which elementary school students acquired, perceived, and practiced oral health knowledge provided by an elementary school-based oral health clinic (SBOHC). It is respectively investigated by gender and year of school. The paper will be relevant for developing specified oral health programs in elementary SBOHCs. By choosing three elementary schools that operate SBOHC in the school district of Daejeon Metropolitan City from April 11 to April 30, 2013, a self-administered questionnaire was given out to be answered directly by 350 students in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades and their responses were collected. Of the collected responses, 326 responses were explored by using the SPSS 12.0. Those students' scores of oral health knowledge are found to be statistically meaningful for school year, not for gender. In them are included correct tooth brushing time, dental caries symptoms, gum disease symptoms, and correct tooth brushing method. Change in tooth brushing method after oral health education showed the statistically meaningful difference for gender and school year. In conclusion, every SBOHC should develop a variety of specified educational programs that depend on gender and grade in each elementary school.

  • Although Internet provides a lot of convenience such as easy accessibility, interactivity, concurrency, openness, subsequent dysfunction causes serious problems. Especially elementary school students are indiscriminately exposed to the problems, and thus information communication ethics education is needed for the students. This study conducted a survey with randomly selected 5th and 6th graders in Chungbuk area, and analyzed 'students' experience and perception related to information dysfunction' and 'their experience and perception related to information & communication ethics education at school'. In addition, for the detailed understanding of students' current status and accompanying instructional approach, an additional analysis was conducted to examine the existence of the difference according to students' gender and grade. As a result, significant differences were found according to students' gender and grade in their experience and perception related to the information dysfunction and information & communication ethics education. Considering such differences according to students' gender and grade, appropriate instructional approach needs to be prepared to satisfy students' needs for more effective information & communication ethics education.

  • In this study, the vocabularies in elementary mathematics textbooks for grade 1-2 were analyzed according to 9-degree of semantic system. Also, the types of vocabulary were analyzed using general academic words, mathematics specific concept words, and mathematics general concept words. As a result, percentages of 1-degree and 2-degree vocabulary was the most in both grade 1 and 2 mathematics textbooks. It also shows that some of general academic words were 3-degree vocabulary and some of mathematics specific concept words were either unregistered or 1-degree vocabulary. In particular, general academic words, which are 3-degree vocabulary, may be unfamiliar to 1st and 2nd grade students. Therefore, students should be given the opportunity to guess and understand the contextual meaning of general academic words from the given contexts in textbooks. The frequency of use of mathematics general concept words in grade 2 textbook increased significantly compared to grade 1 textbook. Since mathematics general concept words are academic and technical vocabulary they should be taught explicitly. Based on the results of this study, implications for vocabulary instruction in mathematics textbooks were discussed.

  • This study aimed to explore the influence of family characteristics on the work-life balance of early adolescents. A series of data analyses was conducted on adolescents' use of time in daily life on the basis of 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS 2018). We found that the work-life balance of youth is related to their parents' health status, presence of older siblings, household income, parenting attitude, parent-child communication time, and mother's occupation. The work-life balance of the fifth graders is more likely to be influenced by family characteristics compared with that of the eighth graders. In particular, the fifth graders' sleep deprivation is affected by the mother's occupation, but there is no significant effect on the eighth graders' sleep deprivation. An important factor in skipping breakfast is household income, with adolescents from low-income families tending to skip breakfast more than five days a week. In addition, parents' health status and parenting attitude are significantly related to skipping of breakfast in early adolescents. Household income is related to the after-school private tutoring hours of both the fifth and eighth graders; however, parenting attitude and mother's occupation are also significant influencing factors of the fifth graders' after-school study. Mother's occupation is related to excessive cell phone use; specifically, the fifth graders whose mothers work white-collar jobs, sales and services or manufacturing are more likely to play with cell phones more than three hours a day than those whose mothers are full-time housewives. These results suggest that the work-life balance policies targeted at the family characteristics of adolescents can improve family environments in a manner that enhances adolescents' life balance, thus supporting the well-being of early adolescents and their families.

  • After we compared the Unaided visual acuity and the Corrected visual acuity who were wearing spectacles, all over elementary school in Iksan, we could get conclusions like these. 1. The grades are getting higher, there are more who are 0.6 unaided visual acuity, and getting higher Corrected who were wearing spectacles. 2. There are 30% who have to change their wearing spectacles. 3. Higher grade separated into good or worth visual acuity then lower grade. 4. When the first grade grow up third grade, change of unaided visual acuity increased at 0.2, decreased 0.7 and 1.0, but the case of fourth grade becomes sixth grade shown a little changes unaided visual acuity.

  • This paper examined vocabulary used in elementary mathematics textbooks and workbooks for the grade band of 5~6. This study focused on the adequacy of vocabulary using 9-degree of semantic difficulty. The results of this study showed that most vocabulary in the textbooks and workbooks was adequate for the target grades. In some cases, however, vocabulary that was supposed to be difficult for the fifth and sixth graders was employed in a way that the meaning of such vocabulary was difficult for students to infer in the given context. The most frequent vocabularies in the main activities of the mathematics textbooks included 'method', 'investigate', 'number', 'communicate', and 'represent'. Based on these results, this study provides 5~6 grade textbook writers with implications on what to further consider in dealing with vocabulary in instructional materials.
