  • The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare the professionalism of elementary teachers in charge of teaching the science-gifted children, based on their personal variables, such as gender, educational career in normal class and gifted class, training in gifted education, academic degree, etc. For this study, the questionnaire was modified by referring to Choi's survey, and conducted to 98 teachers. The results of this study were as follows: In gender, the average of male teachers was significantly higher than the average of female teachers in their professionalism in gifted education. Regional difference was found in the teacher's professionalism, however, showed different aspects in the sub-domain. The teachers' professionalism in accordance with the career in education was no difference. In gifted education career, professionalism increased as high career in gifted education, especially, more than three years. As better educated, teachers' professionalism in responsibility and philosophical understanding for gifted education was increased significantly. The teachers' professionalism according to the degree of training related to gifted education was no significant difference. Overall, 'responsibility and philosophical understanding' and 'humanities-oriented quality' for gifted education were not greatly affected by teacher's personal variables in this study. Based on conclusions, implications for improving their professionalism in gifted education were discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine: (a) whether there was a difference on science-related attitudes between children's accepted and those not for admission to a science education institute for the gifted; (b) whether the children's success or not effects their science-related attitudes. To do those, 138 fourth graders participated in the study. The data showed as follows: First, successful applicant group (N=15) had a little more positive attitudes than unsuccessful applicants group (N=119) on science-related attitudes test. However, no significant differences between the two groups were found; Second, the effects of pass or failure for entrance examination on science-related attitudes were not revealed in unsuccessful applicant group (N=42) as well as in successful applicant group (N=15), in comparison with each group's pretest scores (on day for entrance examination) and posttest scores (after a lapse of 3 months).

  • This research aimed at developing STEAM Program with the medium of films for scientific talents in elementary schools and examining its influence on the problem solving ability, creative personality, and scientific attitude. The results were as follows: First, the STEAM program using movies was proved to be effective in forming creative personality, and a significant difference was found especially in the areas of patience/obsession, self conviction, sense of humor, curiosity, imagination, openness, adventurous spirit, and spirit of independence(p<.05). Second, the STEAM program using movies was found to be a successful way to improve their problem solving ability, and in particular, the difference was significant in the areas of planning an experiment and creative problem solving ability(p<.05). Third, the program was also found to be effective for the enhancement in their scientific attitude, and the difference, particularly in the areas of curiosity, openness, criticism, cooperation, spontaneity, patience, creativity and scientific attitude, was significant(p<.05). The study results above indicated that the STEAM program using movies was an efficacious way in forming creative personality, and enhancing creative problem solving ability and scientific attitude.

  • The purpose of the study was to research science gifted students' learning styles and perceptions on subject matter content. The data was collected from primary science and mathematics classes of a University Center for Science Gifted Education, science classes of a Metrocity Primary Gifted Education Institute, and classes of a normal school. The results of the study were that gifted students perceived the school curriculum much easier than non-gifted students did, ($X^2(4)=33.180$, p<.001), and that levels of interest in the content did not differ between the groups, but 34.6 percent of the total students responded that they found the content uninteresting. Gifted students did not see the content as being important compared to the non-gifted students, ($X^2(4)=12.443$, p<.05), and gifted students valued the methods used higher than the actual content of the textbook. The most helpful activities for their teaming that gifted students chose were projects, listening to teachers, and conducting experiments, amongst others. They also preformed 'teaming at their own speed in a mixed group'" for the study of social studies, science, and mathematics, whereas non-gifted students preformed teaming at the same speed. The two groups of science gifted students varied especially in their perceptions of most helpful activities. It is suggested that special programs for fulfilling gifted students' needs and abilities need to be developed and implemented.
