  • In this study, ordinary Portland cement was used and the air void was minimized by using minute quartz as the filler. In addition, steel fibers were used to mitigate the brittle failure problem associated with high strength concrete. This study is in progress to make an Ultra-high strength powdered concrete (UHSPC) which has compressive strength over 300 MPa. To increase the strength of concrete, we have compared and analyzed the compressive strengths of the concretes with different mix proportions and curing conditions by selecting quartz sand, dolomite, bauxite, ferro silicon which have diameters less than 0.6 mm and can increase the bond strength of the transition zone. Ultra-high strength powdered concrete, which is different from conventional concrete, is highly influenced by the materials in the mix. In the study, the highest compressive strength of the powdered concrete was obtained when it is prepared with ferro silicon, followed in order by Bauxite, Dolomite, and Quartz sand. The amount of ferro silicon, when the highest strength was obtained, was 110%, of the weight of the cement. SEM analysis of the UHSPC showed that significant formation of C-S-H and Tobermorite due to high temperature and pressure curing. Production of Ultrahigh strength powdered concrete which has 28-day compressive strength upto 341MPa has been successfully achieved by the following factors; steel fiber reinforcement, fine particled aggregates, and the filling powder to minimize the void space, and the reactive materials.

  • This study reports on the structural characteristics of slab-column connections using fiber-reinforced ultra-high-strength concrete (UHSC). Compression tests were performed on two slab-column and four isolated column specimens. In the column load tests, slab loads were also applied on the slab-column specimens so that the actual confinement condition at the slab-column joint was considered. The main parameter investigated was the "puddling" of fiber-reinforced UHSC. This paper also investigates the effects of some parameters, such as confinement of slab concrete, steel fibers, and concrete strength of the joint, related to the ability of the slab-column specimens and isolated column specimens without the surrounding slab to transmit axial loads from the UHSC columns through slab-column connections. Furthermore, the ACI Code (2005) and the CSA Standard (2004) are compared to the experimental results. The beneficial effects of the puddling of fiber-reinforced UHSC on the transmission of column loads through slab-column connections are demonstrated.

  • The prestressing force introduced to the tendon in pretensioned concrete members is transferred by direct bond between tendon and concrete, which requires a proper estimation of stress transfer length. The use of pretensiond and/or precast members with UHPC (Ultra High Performance Concrete) may give many advantages in quality control. This paper presents an experiment to estimate the stress transfer length of UHPC for various compressive strength levels of UHPC, cover depths, diameters of tendons and tensioning forces. According to the result of this experiment, the stress transfer length of UHPC member is much reduced comparing that of normal strength concrete. The reduction in stress transfer length of UHPC may come from the high bond strength capacity of UHPC. The transfer lengths obtained from this experiment are compared to those in current design code and a new formula is proposed.

  • In order to develop an Ultra High Performance Concrete (UHPC) suited to the Korean conditions, KICT has carried out several parts of research in the field of UHPC from 2003. KICT developed UHPC which was a structural material exhibiting very remarkable mechanical performances with compressive strength, tensile strength and flexural strength rising up to 200MPa, 15MPa and 35MPa, respectively. In addition, this material presents exceptional durability regard to the very low diffusion and penetration speeds of noxious substances like chloride ions. This 200MPa strength concrete has been effectively adopted for the construction of bridges like Sherbrooke Bridge in Canada in 1997, Sunyu Bridge in Korea in 2002, Meata Bridge in Japan in 2003, Sheperds Guelly Creek Bridge, the first ultra-high strength concrete highway bridge in Australia in 2004 and, more recently in 2005, Mars Hill highway bridge in USA in 2005. The construction of structures using ultra high performance concrete is a worldwide development trend of concrete technology for the construction of advanced facilities in the 21st century.

  • This paper deals with the three-dimensional finite element analysis of failure behavior of UHPFRC I-beam under monotonic load. Different from the constitutive law of normal and high strength concrete, an elastic-plastic fracture model that considers the tensile strain hardening is proposed to describe the material properties of UHPFRC. A multi-directional fixed crack criterion with tensile strain hardening is defined in the tensile region, and Drucker-Prager criterion with an associated flow rule is adopted in the compressive region. The influence of span, prestressing force and section on the behavior of UHPFRC I-beam are investigated. The comparison of the numerical results with the test results indicates a good agreement.

  • The results presented in this paper form part of an investigation into the optimization of a ternary blended cementitious system based on ordinary Portland cement (OPC)/blast furnace slag(BFS)/fly ash(FA) for the development of ultra high strength concrete. Concrete covering a wide range of BFS/FA blending proportions were investigated. Compressive strength at the ages of 3, 7 and 28 days for concrete specimens containing 0%, 10%, 20% and 30%FA along with 0%, 30%, 40% and 50%BFS as partial cement replacement at a water-binder ratio of 0.18 were investigated. Tests on porosity and pore size distribution were conducted using mercury intrusion porosimetry. The results show that the combination of FA10 and BFS30 can improve both short- and long-term properties of concrete as results of reducing of pores larger than 50nm.
