  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate empirically the relationship among self-image, depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity in adolescents. 1602 normal adolescents(697 males and 905 females) responded to self report scales-Offer Self-Image Questionnaire-Revised, 3 subscales of Symptom Checklist-90-Revised. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and LISREL to examine the effect of self-image on depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity, and to test the relationship among the above 4 variables. Adolescents with low self-image showed significantly higher scores in the scales of depression, anxiety, and social sensitivity than did adolescents with high self-image. The result of LISREL showed that the low self-image leads to the emotional state of depression and anxiety, and those of depression and anxiety lead to the increase of social sensitivity, suggesting that self-image has a direct effect on depression and anxiety, and has a direct effect on social sensitivity in adolescent. These results were discussed in terms of implications for the prevention and treatment of adolescent social phobia.

To do this, we analyzed the data obtained from Social and Psychological Anxiety Survey of Korean Society in 2015. The subject is 4,724 adolescent aged 14-18 years. To investigate the moderating effects of variable, we conducted a hierarchial regression analysis and confirmed the explanatory force change. As a result of that, first, social capital, anxiety and self-awareness all had a direct effects on depression. This results show that the better social capital, the lower anxiety, and the higher self-awareness is, the lower depression is. Second, it was found that self-awareness was moderating variable in the relationship of social capital and depression, and the relationship of anxiety and depression. Based on this results, this study has proposed the implications and limitations of the study and suggestions for further study.

  • This study aims to understand whether the effect of poverty is translated to adolescents' mental health though their exposure to violence, which is aggravated by the dangerous environments of the neighborhoods. For this purpose, the study analyzes whether poor adolescents tend to reside on neighborhoods with toxic environments, and whether living in the disadvantageous neighborhood causes the poor adolescents to experience greater violence victimization and fear of violence, and eventually, greater depression and anxiety. The study utilizes secondary analysis of longitudinal data of the Korea Youth Panel Survey. Structural Equation Modeling is used as an analysis method. The study results reveals that poverty has both direct and indirect effects on the level of adolescents' symptoms of depression and anxiety. Especially, poverty affects adolescents' depression and anxiety indirectly through increasing the possibility to reside in more dangerous neighborhoods. Explaining more in detail, living in dangerous neighborhoods seems to expose adolescents more to violence and fear of violence in the neighborhoods and this experience increases the level of depression and anxiety. The study argues that the negative effects of poverty on adolescents should be examined from the view of neighborhood environments. Finally, the study discusses the importance of increasing neighborhood competency as practice and policy implication.

  • This study was conducted to examine the mediating effects of social anxiety and academic self-efficacy in the relationship between adolescent covert narcissism and school life adaptation. The subjects were 423 middle school and high school students. The results of this study are as follows: First, covert narcissistic personality tendency had a negative correlation with school life adaptation(r=-.51, p<.01). Covert narcissism had significant positive correlation with social anxiety(r=.70, p<.01) but had negative correlation with academic self-efficacy(r=-.39, p<.01). Social anxiety showed a significant negative correlation with school life adaptation(r=-.50, p<.01), academic self-efficacy had a positive correlation with school life adaptation(r=.63, p<.01), and social anxiety had a negative correlation with academic self-efficacy(r=-.51, p<.01). Second, as a result of verifying the mediating effects of social anxiety and academic self-efficacy, academic self-efficacy has mediating effects on the relationship between covert narcissism and school life adaptation(${\beta}=.41$, p<.001), and social anxiety has no mediating effect on school life adaptation(${\beta}=-.05$, p<.001). The results of this study suggest that If adolescents with covert narcissism have difficulties in adapting to school life, increasing academic self-efficacy, especially self-control efficacy and self-confidence, may be helpful to improve adolescents' adaptation to school life.

The first task measured interpretation of ambiguous social situations. The second task measured expectations regarding performance in a three minute impromptu speech. The third task assessed for judgemental bias via comparison between post-speech self rating and observer rating. Result : Children with high social anxiety did not differ significantly from low social anxiety children on the dependent measures assessing bias in interpretation, expectation and judgement. However, a significant difference was found in the judges' rating of children's performances on the speech task, with high social anxiety children obtaining significantly lower scores compared to low social anxiety children. Conclusion : The role of cognitive biases in the development and maintenance of social anxiety in children was discussed.

  • The study was conducted to determine the process of social anxiety among male high school students with prescribed internalized shame. In order to carry out the purposes of research, the study set a model which supposes that perfectionistic self-presentation is mediator between internalized shame and social anxiety. A total of 382 high school students participated in the study. The results of the study are as follows: First, the results of this study showed that the internalized shame and social anxiety appear to have a significant static correlation. In particular, the sense of inadequacy, which is a subordinate concept of the internalized shame, was correlated with social anxiety. Second, perfectionistic self-presentation showed a partially mediated the relationship between internalized shame and perfectionistic self-presentation. These results should be studied not only in cognitive factors contributing to social anxiety but also in the individual inner workings of psychological factors.
