  • Even though Korean peninsula is located in regions of moderate seismic risks, current seismic design provisions of the roadway bridge design code have adopted the AASHTO code which is based on the requirements for high seismic regions. The objective of this research is to investigate the seismic performance of circular reinforced concrete (RC) bridge piers with limited ductility, which may be desirable in low or moderate seismic regions, such as in Korea. Four test specimens were designed and constructed. The reference specimen was designed with longitudinal steel ratio as 1.01% and the confinement reinforcement ratio as 0.13% without considering earthquake, and three other test specimens were designed in accordance with a limited-ductility concept as 0.3% for the confinement steel ratio. This confinement ratio is 0.32 times of minimum lateral reinforcement specified in current seismic design provisions, and 2.3 times of lateral reinforcement required in nonseismic design provisions. The pseudo-dynamic test was carried out to evaluate the seismic performance of full-scale specimens in size of 1.2m diameter and 4.8m height. Judging from the experiment, the reference specimen was not satisfactory for the demand displacement ductility ${\mu}$=5.0, but three limited-ductility specimens appeared to have the displacement ductility of more than 5.

  • The Half-depth precast deck is a structural system that utilizes pre-cast panels pre-built at the factory as formwork at the construction stage and as a major structural member at the same time after completion. These systems have joints between segments, and the detail and performance of the joints are factors that have a very large impact on the quality, such as the constructability and durability of the bridge decks. In this study, strength performance evaluation was performed for improved joints using connecting rebar by experimental method. Static loading tests were conducted on the test specimen with improved joint, those with existing joint and those without joint. The test results of the specimens were compared to each other, and the flexural strength required by the design was compared. The flexural strength required in the design was presented by finite element analysis. It has been shown that the flexural strength of the specimens with joints were more than twice that required by the design. But the flexural strength of the specimen with existing joint was about 84% of that without joint. The flexural strength of the specimen with improved joints was a nearly similar degree of that compared to the specimen without joint. And a comparison of the moment-deflection relationship curves of the two specimens also shows a very similar flexural behavior. It is confirmed that improved joint has sufficient flexural strength. In addition to strength, the bridge decks require serviceability, such as deflection and cracking, and in particular, fatigue resistance due to repetitive live loads is an important performance factor. Therefore, further verification studies are required.

  • The concrete structures in Metropolitan city are usually exposed to carbonation and corrosion of embedded steel occurs due to the carbonation. In inspection and diagnosis of concrete structures, carbonation depth in sound concrete is mainly evaluated and service life for concrete structure is predicted based on the result. Generally, however, mass concrete structures such as columns have construction joint for suitable placing and also have cracks in early-age. In this study, carbonation depth in RC columns used for 20 years in metropolitan city is evaluated and also analyzed by considering the local conditions like sound, cracked, and joint area. The carbonation depth in cracked and joint area is more rapid than that in sound area, and it is thought to be more desirable to consider this effect in concrete structures with small cover depth. Furthermore, the technique for carbonation prediction in cracked concrete is derived in terms of crack width and the results from this technique are verified by comparing those from previous research.

  • The purpose of this study was to contribute to the field application cost effectively and reasonably by developing the functional piles that make up for the defects of PHC piles. CFP (Concrete Filled Pretensioned Spun High Strength Concrete Pile with Ring type Composite shear connectors) piles developed in this study increases the compressive stress through enlarged cross section by rearranging composite shear connectors and filling the hollow part of PHC pile with concrete. And it improved shear and bending performance placing the rebar (H13-8ea) within the PHC pile and the hollow part of PHC pile of rebar (H19-8ea). In addition, the composite shear connectors were placed for the composite behavior between PHC pile and filled concrete. Placing Rebars (H13-8ea) of PHC pile into composite shear connector holes are sleeve-type mechanical coupling method that filling the concrete to the gap of the two members. Nonlinear finite element analyzes were performed to verify the performance of shear and bending moments and it deduced the spacing of the composite shear connectors. Through a various interpretation of CFP piles, it's proved that the CFP pile can increase the shear and bending stiffness of the PHC pile effectively. Therefore, this can be utilized usefully on the construction sites.

  • Half-depth panels were developed with the merits of CIP (Cast In Place) decks and precast decks for constructability and fast construction. In this paper, details of half-depth panels with pre-tensioning were suggested. For evaluation of structural performance, five half-depth panel specimens were fabricated and static tests were conducted. The cross-sections of these specimens were composed of pre-tensioned half-depth panels and pre-tensioned two-span half-depth panels. Test parameters were the amount of the prestressing force and the longitudinal reinforcements. Static tests on simply-supported slabs showed that ultimate strength was 1.55 times greater than calculated nominal strength. The flexural strength was only 10 % increased and the influence on crack width control was negligible when the member of tendons was increased twice. For two-span continuous specimens, the ultimate strength increased 1.2 times and 1.38 times respectively as the reinforcement was additionally provided. The verified half-depth panels by this research can be effectively utilized for the fast replacement or construction of bridges.

  • The structures that use the bridge plates are considered to have advantages such as short work term, excellent economical efficiency and low maintenance cost. Bridge plates are being widely used for water ducts and eco-corridors as replacements of reinforced concrete ducts. Bridge plates are deep and have greater pitch as compare to conventionally deep corrugated steel plate. They are expected to be increasingly used in the future. The structures that use bridge plates have two forms, such as arch type and box type. The arch type structures are designed based on the compressive strength, and the box type structures, based on the moment in the plate member. In this study, the ultimate strength and moment strength of the connection part of the specimens were examined by their thickness. Static and bending tests used to evaluate the performance of bridge plate. Finally, These results were used in the design process.

  • High-rise building is taking a place as one of building types from apartment housings to commercial buildings. With taking in account of stability and durability, strength of used materials is increasing gradually in these high-rise buildings. According to this, frequency in use of SD500 re-bar is increasing gradually in high-rise buildings. However the study of SD500 re-bar is insufficient because SD500 re-bar started to be used for domestic buildings lately. Specially because there is no guide or study to refer to, people get into difficulties when to decide the method of re-bar connection in construction using SD500 re-bar. Accordingly in this study, it suggests the method of estimating the economical efficiency on SD500 re-bar connection, and conducts benefit/ cost analysis on lapped splice and coupler splice by applying AHP theory, and then presents its result. After to analyze re-bar diameter of D25, 29, and 32, finally we attained the result that the coupler splice is advantageous in all parts of benefit/ cost more than the lapped splice.

  • Steel-embedded composite piers can enhance the resistance of core concrete by confinement of the steel elements and also can strengthen the stability of the embedded steel elements by concrete parts, so that the resistance of the composite members and seismic requirements can be provided without increasing section dimensions and self-weight. While modular composite piers with single segment do not need prestressing, precast segment composite piers with multiple segments need to have prestressing to prevent excessive cracking at the joints. Initial stresses and deformation by the introduced prestress are changed by long-term properties of concrete and need to be considered in the design. This paper deals with the prestress losses by the measurement of load cells, strains of reinforcements, concrete and embedded steel tubes.

  • It is known that seismic performance of existing bridges having insufficient lateral confinements and lap-splices of longitudinal reinforcements at the base of column decreases dramatically. In this study, small-scaled model tests have been performed to confirm the seismic behaviors of RC bridge piers with various lap-splice lengths. The 8 test models have circular section with diameters of 0.65 m, 0.8 m, 1.0 m, and lap-splice lengths of B-class or C-class. The test results show that the failure modes of models are not depending on the lap-splice length itself but depend on the ratio of lap-splice length to diameter, and that the displacement ductility is also affected by this ratio.

  • In this study, the beam-to column connections of concrete-encased-and-filled steel tube columns were tested under cyclic loading. Two specimens using steel beams and two specimens using precast concrete beams were tested. The dimension of the column cross section was $670mm{\pm}670mm$. The beam depths were 488mm and 588mm for the steel beams and 700mm for the precast concrete beams. The longitudinal bar ratios of the precast concrete beams were 1.1% and 1.5%. For the connections to the steel beams, continuity plates were used in the tube columns. For the connections to the PC beams, couplers were used for beam re-bar connections. The test results showed that except for a specimen, deformation capacities of the specimens were greater than 4% rotation angle, which is the requirement for the Special Moment Frame. Particularly, specimens using precast concrete beam showed excellent performances in the strength, deformation, and energy dissipation.
