  • This paper presents experimental and analysis studies about both the corroded steel expansion and the variation of poor bonding range between steel and concrete. A loss of overall bonding capacity at the concrete-steel interface is evaluated experimentally and crack patterns at the bottom of the concrete are presented here. Steel-concrete interface is covered by rubber due to present local loss of the concrete-steel interface bonding capacity. In case of crack analysis performed by commercial FEM programs. we investigated crack‘s pattern and location. Finally, it is concluded that overall flexural capacity of the reinforced concrete structure is increased by the corroded steel expansion and is dependent of the bonding range at the steel- concrete interface. These results give an important factor to decide a life of reinforced concrete structures.

  • Many reinforced concrete structures have been constructed at the offshore in Korea and those are exposed in environments for long period. Due to that, the reinforcement of the structure faces possibility of corrosion by the salt damage. Such corrosions are effects on the bond performance between concrete and reinforcing bar as well as the performance of the structure. In this study, the performance of RC structure has been investigated when the reinforcing bars are totally bonded and unbonded in the structure. Through the experimental tests and finite element analyses of beam-column joint with bond and unbonded reinforcing bar, the energy dissipation capacity, strength, and crack distribution are compared and discussed.

  • The strut-tie model approach has proven to be effective in the ultimate analysis and design of structural concrete with disturbed regions. For the reliable analysis and safe design of the structural concrete, however, the effective strengths of concrete struts must be determined accurately. In this study, the equations of the effective strengths of concrete struts, which are useful for the three types of determinate and indeterminate strut-tie models of reinforced concrete corbels, were proposed. The effects of shear span-to-effective depth ratio, the vertical-to-horizontal force ratio, and flexural and horizontal shear reinforcement ratios were reflected in the development of the proposed equations. To examine the appropriateness of the proposed and existing equations, the ultimate strengths of 243 reinforced concrete corbels tested to failure were evaluated by using the three types of corbel strut-tie models.

  • Uncertainties in carbonation process of concrete structures are treated by probability-based durability analysis for carbonation using Monte Carlo simulation technique. The results requires the minimum cover thickness of 53mm for 10% of corrosion probability under 4mm/$year^{0.5}$ of carbonation coefficient. The more researches on statistical properties of design variables may give reliable durability analysis/design methods for carbonation of concrete structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide analytical method to reasonably predict the overall behavior up to destruction of reinforced concrete panel specimens using high-strength reinforcing bar. A total of 12 specimens of reinforced concrete panels with a wall thickness one-third the size of the actual nuclear containment structures under various loading conditions and design parameters were selected and the analysis was performed using a non-linear finite element analysis program (RCAHEST) was developed by the authors. The mean and coefficient of variation for shear strength at cracking point and maximum shear strength from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 1.03 and 12%, 0.97 and 9%, respectively. For the shear strain at the maximum shear strength from the experiment and analysis results was predicted 0.96 and 30%, respectively. Based on the results, the analysis program that was applied newly modified constitutive equation in this study is judged as having a relatively high reliability for the analysis results.

  • This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.

  • In this paper, influence of shear on the seismic performance and failure mode of reinforced concrete piers subjected to earthquake loading is investigated. Comparative study has been carried out for reinforced concrete column tests to verify the shear-axial interaction model presented in this paper. Comparison shows that predicted shear hysteretic response agrees well with the test results. Also conducted is a nonlinear time-history analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge damaged by the Kobe earthquake using the current development. Displacement response for piers reveals that maximum displacement is considerably increased due to the effect of shear coupled with axial force variation, which leads to overall stiffness degradation and period elongation. It is therefore concluded that the response considering both shear and axial force gives better explanation regarding the seismic damage evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge piers.

  • A model for the nonlinear flexural analysis of extruded Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) panel reinforced concrete (RC) composite slab has been newly presented. From direct tensile test, ECC panel has been modeled to have the high-ductile tensile behavior after cracking. The developed model was compared with bending test results of two specimens, a conventional RC slab and a ECC panel RC composite slab. The predicted results were well patched with the experimental results, and the ECC panel RC composite slab system had advantages in crack control and improving flexural load-carrying capacity and deformation-capacity.
