  • Due to a shortage of professional labor and the stagnant construction industry in recent days, there has been an increasing demand for securing profitability through cost reduction. Though its importance in the cost and its great influence on the safety and durability of structures, the labor intensiveness of rebar work has caused a serious problem of rising cost accompanied by the loss of rebar materials. In the plant manufacturing process, rebar is cut and bent at the automated facilities and conveyed to the construction site, which makes it possible to manufacture higher-quality bars and to reduce the losses from rebar materials. Different from the expectation, however, this type of plant manufacturing still has not been active since its first introduction in 1990s. In this study, a research on the actual condition of rebar manufacturing plant has been implemented and a standardized rebar manufacturing has been provided as a way to activate rebar manufacturing.

  • This study was focused on the effect of concrete strength and lateral ties of concrete columns subjected to eccentric compressive loads. The twenty-four concrete columns with $200mm{\times}200mm$ square cross-section were tested. The main variables were concrete strength, spacing and configuration of lateral ties, and eccentricity ratios. From the experiment, the followings were investigated ; 1) In all cases, it was observed that the increase of concrete compressive strength led to the decrease of ductility. Also, as the eccentricity ratios increased, the effect of ductility enhancement by lateral ties decreased. 2) As the ties spacing decreased from 100mm to 30mm, the magnitude of axial load acting on the concrete column showed an enhancement of 1.1~1.2 times and the descending curve after a peak moment presented a smooth decline. 3) The high-strength concrete columns required a design of lateral ties to increase the volumetric ratios and density of tie spacing to sustain a proper strength and ductility. Accordingly, regardless of concrete strength, the current AIK design code to specify the maximum tie spacing of concrete columns was proven to lead to the poor strength and ductility for seismic design. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new seismic design code that connects volumetric ratios and tie spacing of concrete columns with concrete strength.

  • The bond between steel and concrete in reinforced concrete members is essential to resist external load, but the bond mechanism in reinforced concrete beams deteriorated by steel corrosion has not been clearly known yet. Most existing researches have dealt with the bond behavior of corroded steel under monotonic loading, but scarce are researches dealing with bond behavior of corroded steel under repeated loading. This study includes the experimental investigation on the bond behavior with respect to the various degrees of steel corrosion under repeated loading. According to the test results, the bond strength of corroded steel under monotonic loading increases as the rate of steel corrosion increases unless the splitting crack occurs. The slip versus number of load cycles relation was found to be approximately linear in double logarithmic scale, not only in specimens without steel corrosion but also in specimens with steel corrosion. The test results also show that the steel corrosion does not negatively affect the bond strength of corroded steel after repeated loading unless the splitting crack occurs. But the fatigue life decreases sharply after splitting crack occurs. This research will be helpful for the realistic durability design and condition assessment of reinforced concrete structures.

  • Design provisions for the development length of headed bars in ACI 318-08 include concrete compressive strength and yield strength of headed bars as design parameters but do not consider the effects of transvers reinforcement. In addition, they have very strict limitation for clear spacing and material strengths because these provisions were developed based on limited tests. In this study, splice tests using SD600 headed bars with $2d_b$ clear spacing and transverse reinforcement were conducted. Test results show that unconfined specimens failed due to prying action and bottom cover concrete prematurely spalled. The contribution of head bearing on the anchorage strength is only 15% on average implying that unconfined specimens failed before the head bearing was not sufficiently developed. Confined specimens with stirrups placed along whole splice length have enhanced strengths in bearing as well as bond because the stirrups prevented prying action and improved bond capacity. Bond failure occurred in locally confined specimens where stirrups were placed only at the ends of splice length. The stirrups at ends of splice lengths can prevent prying action but the bond capacity did not increase. From regression analysis of test results, an equation to predict anchorage strength of headed bars was developed. The proposed equation consists of bond and bearing contributions and includes transverse reinforcement index. The average ratio of tests to predictions is 1.0 with coefficient of variation of 6%.

  • In this study, the tensile strength of 321 full-sized grout-filled splice steeve specimens were compared and analyzed in order to afford the data for a reasonable and economical design of this system. The experimental variables analyzed in this study were embedment length of reinforcing bars, compressive strength of grout, sleeve geometry, loading pattern and final failure mode of specimen. Following main conclusions are obtained : 1) The strength of grout-filled splice sleeve tends to be improved with increasing compressive strength of grout and embedment length of reinforcing bars. Specially this tendency appears apparent in specimens of bond failure rather than rebar failure. 2) The results of this study show that the sleeve geometry have influence on the bond strength of grout-filled splice sleeve. 3) The grout-filled splice sleeve of bond failure don't show the difference of tensile strength according to size of rebar. 4) It is verified that the tensile strength required in ACI and domestic code is retained either when the compressive strength of grout over 70 MPa is used with embedment length of reinforcing bars over 4.5d or when the compressive strength of grout over 80 MPa is used with embedment length of rebars over 3.9d. 5) It is verified that the tensile strength required in AIJ code is retained in case when the embedment length of reinforcing bars is 0.8 times the rebar diameter longer than in ACI code.

  • The purpose of this paper is to find out quantitatively the relationship between the surface shape and the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement. Three-dimensional measurements were carried out on the surface shape of variously corroded reinforcements and parameters expressing the characteristics of the shape, which included the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement, its distribution along the axis. It was investigated that which parameters could correspond to the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement and it was confirmed that the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement could express the mechanical properties most appropriately. Finally, this paper proposes a constitutive model of corroded reinforcement for analyzing the structural behavior of reinforced concrete structures considering the localized corrosion of by finite element method.

  • In this paper, influence of shear on the seismic performance and failure mode of reinforced concrete piers subjected to earthquake loading is investigated. Comparative study has been carried out for reinforced concrete column tests to verify the shear-axial interaction model presented in this paper. Comparison shows that predicted shear hysteretic response agrees well with the test results. Also conducted is a nonlinear time-history analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge damaged by the Kobe earthquake using the current development. Displacement response for piers reveals that maximum displacement is considerably increased due to the effect of shear coupled with axial force variation, which leads to overall stiffness degradation and period elongation. It is therefore concluded that the response considering both shear and axial force gives better explanation regarding the seismic damage evaluation of reinforced concrete bridge piers.

  • This paper studies the bending behavior of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete (UHPFRC) beams focused on the effect of variation in major material design parameters such as tensile strength, elastic modulus of UHPFRC, and rebar ratio. Analytical results show that the variation in the range of ${\pm}20%$ in the tensile strength of UHPFRC causes the significant difference in ${\pm}8{\sim}9%$ of bending strength compared to the reference condition. The variation of elastic modulus in UHPFRC rarely causes the effect on the bending strength of the UHPFRC section, whereas causes the difference in the slopes of moment-curvature curves, indicating different bending stiffness of UHPFRC sections. For the rebar with yield strength of 400MPa, the bending strength of SC120f is increased by 30, 67, and 99% when the rebar ratio is 1.0, 1.5, and 20%, respectively, compared to the rebar ratio of 0.5%. Therefore, it is observed that the variation of rebar ratio significantly affects the difference in bending strength of UHPFRC beams. However, as the compressive strength of UHPFRC becomes greater, the effect of rebar ratio on the increase of bending strength is decreased.
