The purpose of this paper is to find out quantitatively the relationship between the surface shape and the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement. Three-dimensional measurements were carried out on the surface shape of variously corroded reinforcements and parameters expressing the characteristics of the shape, which included the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement, its distribution along the axis. It was investigated that which parameters could correspond to the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement and it was confirmed that the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement could express the mechanical properties most appropriately. Finally, this paper proposes a constitutive model of corroded reinforcement for analyzing the structural behavior of reinforced concrete structures considering the localized corrosion of by finite element method.

Reinforced Concrete structures are constructed under the basic assumption of perfect bonding between steel and concrete. The corrosion of steel in the reinforced concrete columns results in the excessive cracks and gradual deterioration of concrete between steel and concrete. The cyclic loading test was conducted with the three corrosion rates in the laboratory. Throughout this test, it is investigated a bond behavior of reinforced concrete columns under a steel corrosion. Main variables of the test are a corrosion of steel reinforcement and a level of stress.
In lifetime estimation, the FEM analysis method is proposed for predicting corrosion failure time of concrete structures exposed to sea-water. This study shows that the corrosion rate of rebar in artificial pore solution can be transferred to the corrosion rate of rebar in concrete using the relationship between pore volume and concrete volume by Jennings' model. And this study considered the pitting corrosion effects of reinforcement bar on corrosion failure analysis, rebar size to cover depth and nonlinear crack analysis. These analysis results have good accordance with the experimental results of Williamson's work. This methodology can be applied to lifetime prediction procedure of reinforced concrete structures and also gives more reasonable results of concrete cover failure time estimation of reinforced concrete structures exposed to sea-water.

Applying the calculated cross-sectional reduction due to the corroded rebar investigated in the field to the numerical analysis model, the damage pattern and delamination of concrete in the field showed a tendency relatively similar to the numerical analysis results. It was analyzed that when the expansion pressure due to corrosion of the reinforcing bar is greater than the tensile stress of the concrete, cracks are generated and the concrete cover can be fracture. As a result of this study, the correlation between the corrosion rate of reinforcing bars and the crack occurrence of the concrete cover of the subway box structure was verified based on the numerical analysis and field test results. To prevent rebar corrosion, the corrosion rate can be reduced by applying rust prevention to the reinforcing bar and changing the material. In the case of exposed to a corrosive environment, the tensile strength of the concrete is improved by adjusting the concrete compressive strength to secure durability against the expansion pressure caused by the corroded rebar.

Flexural test of reinforced concrete beam with corroded reinforcement were performed to measure the deflection, curvature and cracking moment for various bar diameter and amounts of corrosion. The amounts of corrosion are varied from 0% to 10% by weight and the bar diameters are chosen as 10mm, 13mm, and 19mm. The changes in reinforcement diameter do not affect the flexural behaviors significantly according to this experiment. If the amounts of corrosion is greater than 2%, the deflection and curvature of the beam increased and the cracking moment decreased. It means that the lower amounts of corrosion does not result structural damage in flexural member significantly as in direct tensile test. A modification factor considering an effect of amounts of corrosion is proposed based on the experiment, which can be used to determine the deflection of reinforced concrete beam with corroded reinforcement.

The corrosion of reinforcement is the main reason for the performance degradation of concrete structures. The pre-rusted parts of rebar in concrete structures are vulnerable to the corrosion, especially if the structure is exposed to wet or chlorinated environments. In this study, effects of different curing solution on corrosion behavior of the pre-rusted rebars in the cement composites were investigated. HCl(3%) and CaCl2(10%) solution were utilized to accelerate the pre-rust of the rebar, and each pre-rust condition rebar including reference (RE) were placed in mortar cylinder. Three kinds of samples then were cured in CaCl2 (3%) solution and tap water respectively for 120 days. Electrochemical polarization and half-cell potential measurement were used to monitor the influence of curing water on the corrosion behavior of pre-rusted steel bar in cement composite. The surface morphology and composition of corroded steel bar were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray diffraction. The results show that the corrosion rates of pre-rusted samples in both curing water are higher than that of non-pre-rusted samples. The corrosion rates of RE, CaCl2 and HCl pre-rusted samples in salt water were 8.14, 4.48, 13.81 times higher than those in tap water respectively, on the 120th day.
Recently, large scale concrete structures exposed to severe environment are increasingly built in various locations. The corrosion may severely affect the durability and service life of such a concrete structure. It is, therefore, necessary to develop durable concrete to enhance the corrosion resistance. The corrosion resistance of concrete can be identified through accelerated corrosion test. The purpose of the present paper is, therefore, to devise a reasonable and accurate method to predict the amount of corrosion of reinforcing steels. The proposed method which is basically based on the concept of Faraday's Law, determines the corroded amount of a rebar according to accelerated corrosion time. The corrosion is accelerated by employing the potentiometric corrosion test arrangement. The effects of admixtures in concrete including fly ash and silica fume have been also studied to explore the relative corrosion resistance of concrete.
