The purpose of this paper is to find out quantitatively the relationship between the surface shape and the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement. Three-dimensional measurements were carried out on the surface shape of variously corroded reinforcements and parameters expressing the characteristics of the shape, which included the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement, its distribution along the axis. It was investigated that which parameters could correspond to the mechanical properties of corroded reinforcement and it was confirmed that the maximum decrement of sectional area of reinforcement could express the mechanical properties most appropriately. Finally, this paper proposes a constitutive model of corroded reinforcement for analyzing the structural behavior of reinforced concrete structures considering the localized corrosion of by finite element method.

In this study, corrosion resistance of steel in cracked-reinforced concrete was performed according to experimental method. Mixed design is OPC, 30% PFA, 60% GGBS and 10% SF, respectively. Moreover, corrosion resistance test was measured using ultra testing machine for 0.3mm crack induction. The corrosion resistance of blended concrete shows the results following OPC > 10%SF > 30% PFA > 60% GGBS after 60days curing. In case of mass loss test, embedded reinforcement in OPC concrete surveyed the minimum corrosion and appeared better corrosion resistance than blended concrete. As a result, corrosion resistance of sound concrete is higher than cracked concrete. Moreover, corrosion resistance of binary concrete is lower than OPC.

The purpose of this experimental research is to evaluate the resistance of reinforcement corrosion and chloride ion penetration of high volume fly ash (HVFA) concrete. For this purpose, concrete test specimens were made for various strength level and replacement ratio of fly ash, and then compressive strength and diffusion coefficient for chloride ion of them were measured for 28, 91 and 182 days, respectively. Also, corrosion monitoring by half cell potential method was carried out for the made lollypop concrete test specimens to detect the time of corrosion initiation for reinforcement in concrete. As a result, it was observed from the test results that compressive strength of HVFA concrete was decreased with increasing replacement ratio of fly ash but long-term resistance against reinforcement corrosion and chloride ion penetration of that was increased.

The bond between steel and concrete in reinforced concrete members is essential to resist external load, but the bond mechanism in reinforced concrete beams deteriorated by steel corrosion has not been clearly known yet. Most existing researches have dealt with the bond behavior of corroded steel under monotonic loading, but scarce are researches dealing with bond behavior of corroded steel under repeated loading. This study includes the experimental investigation on the bond behavior with respect to the various degrees of steel corrosion under repeated loading. According to the test results, the bond strength of corroded steel under monotonic loading increases as the rate of steel corrosion increases unless the splitting crack occurs. The slip versus number of load cycles relation was found to be approximately linear in double logarithmic scale, not only in specimens without steel corrosion but also in specimens with steel corrosion. The test results also show that the steel corrosion does not negatively affect the bond strength of corroded steel after repeated loading unless the splitting crack occurs. But the fatigue life decreases sharply after splitting crack occurs. This research will be helpful for the realistic durability design and condition assessment of reinforced concrete structures.

Ten types of steel bars having different Cr contents were embedded in concretes with chloride ion contents of 0.3, 0.6, 1.2, and $2.4kg/m^3$ to fabricate specimens assuming such deteriorative environments. After being carbonated to the reinforcement level, these concretes were subjected to corrosion-accelerating cycles of heating/cooling and drying/wetting. The time-related changes in the corrosion area and corrosion loss of the Cr-bearing rebars were then measured to investigate their corrosion resistance. The results revealed that in a deteriorative environment prone to both carbonation and chloride attack, corrosion resistance was evident with a Cr content of 7% or more and 9% or more in concretes with chloride ion contents of 1.2 and $2.4kg/m^3$, respectively.
Epoxy coated bars protecting reinforcing bars from corrosion and enhancing durability of reinforced concrete structures are tested to evaluate corrosion protection properties. Tests are performed based on the relevant sta.ndards of KS and ASTM, such as chenical resistance, salt water spray, salt crock test and chloride ermeability test. with the main varlable of the coating thlckness. Test results show good chemical protection property and chloride permeability. The results of the salt water spray and the salt crock test show that epoxy coating well protects the reinforcing bars from corrosion, cornparing to the biack bars without epoxy coatmg. However, several spots on the coated bars are rusted at the pinholes or un the bars with coating thickness less thar $200{\mu}M$. Special cautions are required i n the process of blast cleanmg when applying the usion-bonded epoxy coating.
This study investigated the corrosion properties of reinforced concrete with the addition of steel fibers. The transport properties of steel fiber-reinforced concrete such as permeable void, absorption by capillary action, water permeability and chloride diffusion were first measured to evaluate the relationship with the corrosion of steel rebar. Test results showed a slight increase on the compressive strength with the addition of steel fibers as well as considerable improvement of penetration resistance to mass transport of harmful materials into concrete. The addition of steel fibers in reinforced concrete accelerated the initiation of steel corrosion contrary to the expected results based on the measured transport properties. The NaCl ponding surface showed the spalling failure due to the corrosion expansion of steel fibers and the cut-surface around the steel rebar showed the localized steel fiber's corrosion. The wet-dry cycling with high chloride ions as well as high temperature seems to induce the increase of salt crystallization on the pores continually and the increased pressure with the steel fiber's corrosion on the pores caused the spalling failure on the exposed surface. The microcracking on the surface therefore accelerated the movement of water, chloride ions and oxygen into the embedded steel rebar. The mechanism affecting corrosion of embedded steel reinforcement with steel fibers in this study are not yet fully understood and require further study comprising of accurate experimental design to isolate the effect of steel fiber's potential mechanism on the corrosion process.

The existing research on the damage detection method for building structures has considered the damages from the excessive loadings such as the earthquake. However, the structural performance of building structures could be reduced due to the deterioration based on the chloride, carbonation during the long-term time. Thus, to effectively manage the healthiness of structures, the deterioration influences on the structures should be checked. In this study, the corrosion of rebars by the chloride is considered as the deterioration factor. To consider the structural performance reduction of the corroded rebars, the yield strength, cross-sectional area, rupture strain of rebars and the compressive strength of cover concrete based on the corrosion level are estimated. These properties of rebars and cover concrete are used for the procedure to evaluate the structural performance reduction of structural member level and the building level. The moment-curvature analysis is performed to evaluate the structural performance reduction of structural member level. Also, the eigenvalue analysis and the pushover analysis are performed to investigate the natural period and mode shape and the strength and deformation performance of buildings, respectively.
Corrosion products of reinforcement in concrete induce pressure to the adjacent concrete due to the expansion of steel. This expansion causes tensile stresses around the reinforcing bar and eventually induces cracking through the concrete cover The cracking of concrete cover will adversely affect the safety as well as the service life of concrete structures. The purpose of the this study is to examine the critical corrosion amount which causes the cracking of concrete cover. To this end, a comprehensive experimental and theoretical study has been conducted. Major test variables include concrete strength and cover thickness. The strains at the surface of concrete cover have been measured according to the amount of steel corrosion. The corrosion products which penetrate into the pores and cracks around the steel bar have been considered in the calculation of expansive pressure due to steel corrosion. The present study indicates that the critical amount of corrosion, which causes the initiation of cracking, increases with an increase of compressive strength. A realistic relation between the expansive pressure and average strain of corrosion product layer in the corrosion region has been derived and the representative stiffness of corrosion layer was determined. A concept of pressure-free strain of corrosion product layer was introduced to explain the relation between the expansive pressure and corrosion strain. The proposed theory agrees well with experimental data and may be a good base for the realistic durability design of concrete structures.
This study describes the basic concept and the applicability of Hybrid Reinforcement System using conventional steel reinforcing bars and Fiber Reinforced Polymer bars. The concrete bridge decks are assumed to be supported by beams and reinforced with two layers of reinforcing bars. In concrete bridge deck using HRS, the top tensile force for negative moment zone on beam supports is assumed to be resisted by FRP reinforcing bars, and the bottom tensile force for positive moment zone in the middle of hem supports is assumed to be resisted by conventional steel reinforcing bars, respectively. The FRP reinforcing bars are non-corrosive. Thus, the steel reinforcement is as far away as possible from the top surface of the deck and protected from intrusion of corrosive agent. HRS concrete bridge deck has sufficient ductility at ultimate state as the following reasons; 1) FRP bars have lower elastic modulus and higher ultimate strain than steel re-bars have, 2) FRP bars have lower ultimate strain if provided higher reinforcement ratio, 3) ultimate strain of FRP bars can be reduced if FRP bars are unbonded. Test results showed that FRP and HRS concrete slabs are not failed by FRP bar rupture, but failed by concrete compression in the range of ordinary reinforcement ratio. Therefore, in continuous concrete bridge deck using HRS, steel reinforcing bars for positive moment yield and form plastic hinge first and compressive concrete fail in the bottom of supports or in the top of the middle of supports last. Thus, bridge deck consumes significant inelastic strain energy before its failure.
