The Study on the Effect of Rubus coreanus Miquel Extract as a Comsetic Ingredient (복분자 딸기 추출물의 효능에 관한 연구)

  • Recently plant extracts have obtained increased attention because of their health-related beneficial aspects. In this study, we evaluated anti-oxidation, whitening and anti-wrinkle of four different extracts obtained from Rubus coreanus (ethanol extracts of unripe, ripe fruits, leaves/stems, and roots). The ethanol extract of unripe fruits of Rubus coreanus generally showed stronger whitening and the anti-wrinkle activities than other extracts of Rubus coreanus. As a results, we knew that the ethanol extract of unripe Rubus coreanus fruit had mote possibility as a whitening and anti-wrinkle ingredient for skin care products.

Anti-inflammatory effect of ethanol extract of Syzygium aromaticum (정향(Syzygium aromaticum) 에탄올 추출물의 항염 효과)

  • The purpose of this study is for checking anti-inflammatory effects of Syzygium aromaticum ethanol extract. For this, we investigated biological active evaluation about anti-inflammatory effects by Syzygium aromaticum ethanol extract. Syzygium aromaticum was extracted with 70% ethanol. This extract was tested for the cell viability on RAW 264.7 cell line by MTT assay, nitric oxide inhibitory activity and expression of inflammatory mediators. The extract showed low cytotoxicity as more than 90% cell viability in under 25 ㎍/ml concentration. On LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cell line, nitric oxide inhibition activity result showed that the extract reduced NO productions in a concentration-dependent manner. Expression of inflammatory cytokines as PGE2, TNF-α and IL-1β decreased in a concentration-dependent manner and iNOS and COX-2 proteins expression were decreased significantly in western blot analysis. We confirmed that the Syzygium aromaticum ethanol extract has excellent anti-inflammatory effect. This results suggested that extract of Syzygium aromaticum may have value as the cosmetic materials.

Evaluation of Antioxidant and Antimicrobial Activities of Solvent Extracts from Coriolus versicolor (구름버섯(Coriolus versicolor)의 용매 추출물에 대한 항균 및 항산화 활성 조사)

  • Antioxidant activities of various solvent extracts from Coriolus versicolor were investigated for their total polyphenol content, total flavonoid content, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) cation radical scavenging activity. C. versicolor extracts were produced by organic solvents such as ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methanol. Total polyphenol and flavonoid contents in the ethanol and ethyl acetate extracts were higher than those in the methanol extract. DPPH radical scavenging activity of methanol extract showed the highest value of 80.3%, which was similar to that of ascorbic acid (85.5%). All extracts showed good (>90.0%) ABTS cation radical scavenging activity. The antimicrobial activities of these extracts from C. versicolor were evaluated against six strains of bacteria using the disc diffusion method. All extracts showed antimicrobial activities against all tested bacteria except Staphylococcus aureus. These results indicate that various extracts from C. versicolor could be useful as natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.

Anticariogenic Activities of Various Plant Extracts (항충치효과를 가진 식물 소재 탐색)

  • As an effort to select powerful anti-cariogenic materials from natural resources, various plant extracts were examined for their anti-S. mutans and anti-glucosyltransferase (GTase) activities. The ethanol extracts of licorice bark, which was produced after water extraction of licorice, showed the most powerful anti-S. mutans as well as anti-GTase activities. When licorice bark was consecutively fractionated with n-hexane, chloroform, ethylacetate, and butanol, the chloroform fraction exhibited the strongest anti-S. mutans activites. This fraction was further fractionated into 4 fractions through a silica gel column, and according to HPLC analysis, anti-S. mutant activities seemed to come mostly from relatively hydrophobic materials.

Antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of ginger with aging and fermentation (발효숙성생강의 항산화 및 항균 활성)

  • Zingiber officinale Roscoe, commonly known as ginger, has long been used as a powerful health-promoting antioxidant that supports cellular health of the human body. The objective of this study was to compare the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the samples with aging and fermentation. Antioxidant activities of the samples were compared using total phenol, flavonoid contents, ABTS cation radical scavenging activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity. Antimicrobial activities were also examined using the paper disc method and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Acidity of the fermented ginger (FG) with lactic acid bacteria showed a significantly higher value than that of the ginger (GG). The content of 6-gingerol, a bioactive component in ginger, decreased in all fermented gingers but 6-shogaol which is also one of the main valuable ingredients showed the increased content at ginger fermented with Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus acidphilus. Flavonoid contents of the FG and GG did not show significant differences. However, ABTS cation radical scavenging activity and DPPH radical scavenging activity were 10-30% increased in the samples with fermentation (p<0.05), respectively. The samples of the disc showed an inhibitory effect on growth of gram positive Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. Zinger with fermentation showed higher antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Thus, we conclude that aging and fermentation can be a helpful process to increase the functional effects of ginger.

Antimicrobial Activities and Stability of Rhus Javanica L., Cinnamomum Verum and Rosmarinus Officinalis Extracts Used in the Manufacture of Cosmetics (화장품에 적용한 오배자·계피·로즈마리 추출물의 항균활성 및 안정성 검증)

  • This study attempted to investigate the usefulness of Rhus javanica L., Cinnamomum verum and Rosmarinus officinalis extracts which have antimicrobial and antioxidant effects without any harm on human health as natural preservatives. In terms of extraction, extraction by 70% ethanol and hot-water extraction were used for Cinnamomum verum and Rhus javanica L. respectively. For Rosmarinus officinalis, a mixed method (70% ethanol and hot-water extraction) was adopted. In terms of experimental methods, antimicrobial effects, antioxidant activity through DPPH and safety and stability of cosmetics were assessed, and a challenge test was performed, and the results found the followings: According to an antimicrobial test, good antimicrobial effects were found in bacteria (Rhus javanica L. extract) and fungi (Cinnamomum verum extract). In contrast, the Rosmarinus officinalis extract was set aside because of poor antimicrobial activity. In the mixed extract (Rhus javanica L. + Cinnamomum verum), antimicrobial effects were observed in 'complex C (mixed in a 1:1 ratio)' while both inhibitory and sterilizing effects were found in 5 different test strains at minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). In addition, antioxidant effects were detected in non-mixed extract and mixed extract ('complex C'). Furthermore, a test on cosmetics which adopted '10% complex C' instead of synthetic preservative revealed safety and stability. Therefore, this study has confirmed the potential of the Rhus javanica L., Cinnamomum verum and Rosmarinus officinalis extracts as materials for natural preservatives.

Antioxidative and Antibrowning Effects of Taraxacum platycarpum and Chrysanthemum indicum Extracts as Natural Antibrowning Agents (천연 갈변저해제로서의 민들레 및 감국 추출물의 항산화 및 갈변억제 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Taraxacum platycarpum and Chrysanthemum indicum extracts on the browning of apple slices. The inhibition of the PPO activities, total phenolic contents, and DPPH free-radical-scavenging activities was measured from water and from the 80% EtOH extracts of Taraxacum platycarpum and Chrysanthemum indicum as natural antibrowning agents. Apples were cut into 15-mm-thick slices, and each slice was dipped for 1 min in different treatment solutions (1% Taraxacum platycarpum and Chrysanthemum indicum extracts, 1% citric acid) and was stored at room temperature. The inhibition of the PPO activity in the Chrysanthemumin indicum extract was better than that in the Taraxacum platycarpum extract. The highest DPPH free-radical-scavenging activity (76.10%) was found in the 80% EtOH extract of Chrysanthemum indicum. After 24 h, the ${\Delta}E$ value of the apple slices that were treated in the 80% EtOH extract of Chrysanthemum indicum was at the lowest level (2.22). The total phenolic content was 94.07 mg/g, and the total flavonoid content was 102.60 mg/g, in the 80% EtOH extract of Chrysanthemum indicum. The antibrowning effect of Chrysanthemum indicum was higher than that of Taraxacum platycarpum in the apple slices.

Effects of Methanol Extracts from Diospyros malabarica Stems on Growth and Biofilm Formation of Oral Bacteria (인도감나무 줄기 추출물이 구강미생물의 생육과 바이오필름 생성에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the potential of medicinal plants as oral health materials derived from natural products. Among the extracts from 200 medicinal plants grown in Nepal, Laos, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Vietnam, and China, stem extracts from Diospyros malabarica (1 mg/disc) showed the highest antibacterial activity against Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC33277 and Streptococcus mutans ATCC25175. The D. malabarica stem extracts showed antibacterial activity similar to chlorhexidine, sodium lauryl sulfate, and triclosan, which were used as a positive control, as well as higher antibacterial activity against S. mutans ATCC25175 than P. gingivalis ATCC33277. The D. malabarica stem extracts showed bactericidal action (MBC, 0.4 mg/ml) against P. gingivalis ATCC33277 and bacteriostatic action against S. mutans ATCC25175. The biofilm production rate of S. mutans ATCC25175 and the expression of the comX gene associated to biofilm formation in the cultures treated with 0.2-1.0 mg/ml of D. malabarica stem extracts were suppressed in a concentration-dependent manner. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that D. malabarica stem extracts can be used as oral health material derived from natural materials, as demonstrated by the bacteriostatic action and inhibition of biofilm formation against S. mutans ATCC25175.

Antioxidant and Antihemolytic Activity of Ethanol Extracts of Rubus coreanus Miquel (복분자 에탄올 추출물의 항산화 및 항용혈 효능)

  • To develop a natural antioxidant and anti-hemolytic agents, we investigated the effects of ethanol extracts of Rubus coreanus Miquel (crude extracts). Crude extract was extracted with ethanol. Antioxidant activity of crude extracts was evaluated by employing two different assays, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and super oxide dismutase(SOD)-like activity. Also, anti-hemolytic activity of crude extract was determined using $H_2O_2$-induced hemolysis in normal rat red blood cells (RBC) or plasma. The extracts obtained from crude extract dose-dependently increased the scavenging activity on DPPH-induced radicals and SOD-like activity. RBC oxidative hemolysis induced by $H_2O_2$ was significantly suppressed by the extracts of Rubus coreanus Miquel in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that crude extracts may have value as the potential antioxidant and anti-hemolytic medicinal plant.
