This study was performed to evaluate and compare the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of various berry juices (cherry, grape, blueberry, aronia, cranberry, and raspberry). The cherry, aronia, and cranberry juices included higher levels of total polyphenol than the other berry juices. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of various berry juices increased according to the juices concentration. The scavenging activity of DPPH radicals by the aronia, cranberry, and raspberry juices was higher than those of other samples and was in the following order: aronia > cranberry > raspberry. The FRAP values of 100% aronia juice was the highest among the samples, which was more than five times higher than grape juice at a concentration of 25%. The cranberry and raspberry juices exhibited a strong inhibitory effect against important food-borne bacteria, and in general, the berry juices inhibited the growth of Gram-negative bacteria more than that of Gram-positive bacteria. The cranberry and raspberry juices exhibited high antimicrobial activities against important food-borne bacteria at a concentration of 100% and 75%, however, they did not affect food-borne bacteria at a concentration below 10%. These results suggest that aronia, cranberry, and raspberry may be used effectively as natural additives and as functional foods due to their high antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in the HaCaT keratinocyte cell line produce proinflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin-1${\alpha}$(IL-1${\alpha}$), tumor neurosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin- 8 (IL-8) and also increase the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and prostaglandins E2 (PGE2). In this study, we developed new natural ingredients for cosmetics that inhibit the pro-inflammatory responses induced by LPS in HaCaT cells. The mixture of Sorbus commixta (SC), Urtica dioica (UD), Phyllostachys nigra (PN), and Rhus semialata gall (RS) extracts blocked the increase of TNF-${\alpha}$ IL-1${\alpha}$ IL-6, and IL-8. The increase of COX-2, iNOS, and PGE2 were also blocked by it. Finally, the mixture inhibited skin irritation induced by sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), when applied on skin through IQ chamber$^{(R)}$. In conclusion, these results show that the mixture of SC, UD, PN, and RS can be used as a primary ingredient to alleviate skin irritation when cosmeceutical products are developed for sensitive skin.
In this study, the 163 edible plants that are permitted as foods by the Korea Food and Drug Administration, were extracted in methanol. Following extration, their macrophage immunostimulating effects (MIE) were examined using a macrophage from BALB/C mice at four different concentrations of plant extract, such as $10\;{\mu}g/mL$, $100\;{\mu}g/mL$, $500\;{\mu}g/mL$, and $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$, in vivo. Forty-two samples significantly showed MIEs. Among them, 20 samples had increased MIEs at higher than 10%, as compared to the negative control group. Nineteen samples had increased MIEs at two of the plant extract concentrations, and 3 samples [Allium schoenoprasmum (chive), Aralia elata (fatsia), Capsosiphon fulvescens (seaweed fulvescens)] had increased MIEs at three of the concentration conditions. In particular, Dioscorea batatas (yam) showed MIEs at all concentrations, as well as slightly higher MIEs as compared to the positive control group. Therefore, Dioscorea batatas was evaluated to be an excellent MIE.

The rhizomes of Cnidium officinalis were extracted in aqueous MeOH, and the concentrate was fractionated via systematic solvent fractionation to EtOAc, n-BuOH, and aqueous fractions. The repeated column chromatography of EtOAc and n-BuOH fractions using silica gel, octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20 as stationary phase to afford five lipids. They were identified to be methyl linoleate (1), linoleic aicd (2) 6-linoleoyl-𝛼-D-glucopyranosyl 𝛽-D-fructofuranoside (3), 1-linolenoyl-3-(𝛼-D-galactopyranosyl (1→6)-𝛽-D-galactopyranosyl) glycerol (4), and 1-linoleoyl-3-(𝛼-D-galactopyranosyl (1→6)-𝛽-D-galactopyranosyl) glycerol (5) on the basis of spectroscopic data such as IR, MS, and Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Compounds 1 and 3-5 were isolated for the first time from this plant in this study. The NMR data of fatty acids 1 and 2 reported in literatures are different each other. Authors identified the NMR data without ambiguity. Compound 3, a conjugate of sucrose and fatty acid, and compounds 4 and 5, digalactosyl monoglyceride, are very rarely occurred in natural source. Through the immune enhancement and anticancer activity of the reported lipid compounds, the potential as various pharmacologically active materials of Cnidium officinalis rhizome can be expected.
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a mixture of ethanol extracts of Black oryzasativa, Sesamum indicum, Oryza sativa, Rhynchosia Nulubilis, and Polygoni multiflori radix (MIXEE) on melanogenesis to develop a natural product for black hair growth. An accumulation of hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) in hair follicles, which reduces melanin synthesis, is responsible for hair graying. In the present study, MIXEE showed scavenging activity against DPPH radicals and reducing power. In addition, it reduced the cellular $H_2O_2$ level, indicating that it could inhibit oxidation and promote melanin synthesis, which was decreased by $H_2O_2$. On the other hand, it did not affect tyrosinase activity in vitro but promoted the turnover of L-DOPA into melanin. MIXEE promoted melanin synthesis at the cellular level in B16F1 cells. Furthermore, MIXEE increased the expression levels of superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) and SOD3 in western blot analysis. In addition, MIXEE increased the expression levels of tyrosinase-related protein (TRP)-2, which promoted melanin synthesis from L-DOPA. The results suggested that MIXEE could promote melanogenesis. Therefore, MIXEE may have potential as a natural product for promotion of melanin production and reversal of gray hair to black hair.
Extracted fractions of the green seaweed Ulva lactuca were studied to verify the cytotoxicity and immunostimulating activity. The fractions from the ethanol extract of U. lactuca were prepared by the systematic extraction procedure with solvents such as hexane, ethyl ether, methanol, butanol and $H_2O$. The cytotoxic effects of U. lactuca fractions against human leukemia cell line U937, mouse neuroblastoma cell line (NB41A3), human hepatoma cell line (HepG2) and rat glioma cell line (C6) were investigated. Ethyl ether fraction showed the highest cytotoxicity against all four cell lines tested. In addition, $H_2O$ fraction also showed relatively high cytotoxicity. Dose dependent patterns were observed on all four cell lines. The immune-stimulating effects of U. lactuca fractions on rat macrophage cell line (RAW 264.7) were also investigated. All five fractions of U. lactuca extract stimulated NO production with concentration dependant manner. These results suggest that U. lactuca may be a useful candidate for a natural cancer preventing and immune-stimulating agents.

High hydrostatic pressure and enzymatic hydrolysis (HPEH) was applied to anchovy in order to produce a natural seasoning ingredient. Total soluble solid, amino nitrogen, total nitrogen and the degree of hydrolysis of anchovy hydrolysates were investigated depending on the process parameters such as temperature, pressure, enzyme concentration and enzyme type. The optimal condition for anchovy hydrolysis was confirmed as temperature 50$^{\circ}C$, reaction time 24 hrs, pressure 50 MPa and enzyme concentration 0.6% in HPEH treatment. HPEH treatment showed more effective in overall properties of anchovy hydrolysis than those of control. All anchovy hydrolysates produced by HPEH treatment were increased more 1.5-2.6 times of total free amino acid than that of control. From these results, the HPEH treatment appears to be an effective and economic process to produce a natural seasoning ingredients.

This study was aimed to evaluate and compare the proximate composition, antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of Sageretia thea (Osbeck) M.C.Johnst (S. thea) fruit and blueberry. The calorific value, crude protein, crude fat, crude ash, and carbohydrate were higher in S. thea fruit than in blueberry. S. thea fruit and blueberry have different profile of free sugars, in which amounts of fructose, glucose, and maltose were much higher in S. thea fruit than in blueberry. The methanol extracts of S. thea fruit contain higher amounts of total polyphenol and anthocyanin compared to those of blueberry extracts. In additions, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), alkyl, and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activities are greater in S. thea fruit extracts. Ethyl acetate fractions and n-butanol fractions of S. thea fruit and blueberry show the most potent scavenging activity in DPPH-, alkyl-, and ABTS-radical scavenging assay. The ethyl acetate fractions of S. thea fruit and blueberry are the richest fraction in polyphenol contents while the n-butanol fractions of those are the highest fraction in anthocyanin contents. Furthermore, both S. thea fruit and blueberry extracts protect human dermal fibroblast cells against a $H_2O_2$-induced oxidative stress. The antiproliferative activities of n-hexane and chloroform fraction from S. thea fruit and blueberry were observed in AGS human gastric cancer and MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cells. Therefore, our results suggest for the first time that the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of S. thea fruit is comparable to that of blueberry and the nutritional value of the former is even superior to that of the latter.
Amelanchier asiatica fruits have been used as a traditional medical food. This research was investigated to assess angiotensin converting enzyme, xanthine oxidase (XOase) and elastase inhibitory activity and antioxidant activities. The content of total phenolic compounds in A. asiatica fruits extracts was 17.6mg/mL. In extracts, the electron donating ability by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl free radical scavenging test of A. asiatica fruits extracts was 90.18% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid radical decolorization of A. asiatica fruits extracts was 98.81% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The inhibition rate of the antioxidant protection factor was 1.03, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance was 73.27% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The XOase inhibition activity of A. asiatica fruits extracts of showed to be 13.19% at $200{\mu}g/mL$. The angiotensin converting enzyme activity was significantly inhibited by A. asiatica fruits extracts as 82.52% inhibitory rate at $200{\mu}g/mL$. Elastase inhibitory activity in the A. asiatica fruits extracts (41.48% at $200{\mu}g/mL$) was higher than vitamin C (12.8% at $200{\mu}g/mL$). These results suggests that A. asiatica fruits extracts have the greatest property as a functional food and functional cosmetic source.

In a continuing screening of selected medicinal plants native to South Korea, the antioxidant and pancreatic lipase inhibitory activities of an aqueous methanolic extract from the heartwood of Aquilaria agallocha were investigated. Eighty percent of the methanolic extract of A. agallocha was further divided into $CH_2Cl_2$, EtOAc and n-BuOH in order to yield four solvent-soluble portions, namely $CH_2Cl_2$-soluble, EtOAc-soluble, n-BuOH-soluble and $H_2O$ residue. The antioxidant properties were evaluated by employing radical scavenging assays using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) ($ABTS^+$) radicals, while the anti-obesity efficacy of A. agallocha extracts and solvent-soluble portions were tested by porcine pancreatic lipase assay. All tested samples showed dose-dependent radical scavenging and pancreatic lipase inhibitory activities. Among the tested extracts and solvent-soluble portions, the $CH_2Cl_2$-soluble portion showed much higher radical scavenging activity and pancreatic lipase inhibitory properties when compared with other solvent-soluble portions. This result suggested that there was a significant relationship between the total phenolic content and biological efficacies, and A. agallocha extract might be considered as a new potential source of natural antioxidants and as a pancreatic lipase inhibitory source. A more systematic investigation of this biomass will be performed for further investigation of activity against antioxidative and anti-obesity effects.
