  • Satellite data have attracted attention on research such as natural disaster and climate changes because satellite data is very advantageous for observing a wide range of variability. However, there are still limited spatial and temporal resolutions in satellite data. To overcome these limitations, fusion of various sensors and combination of primary products are used. In this study, surface temperature data of 500 m spatial resolution was produced by fusion of GOCI and MI data of COMS. Also these LST are used with NDVI for estimating TVDI. Soil moisture condition of the Korean peninsula was evaluated by these TVDI and it was compared with SSMI derived from ASCAT surface soil moisture data. As a result, COMS TVDI and ASCAT SSMI showed similar spatial distribution and suggested the possibility of observing the soil moisture using COMS. Therefore, the TVDI estimations can be used as a basis for estimating the high resolution soil moisture, and the application of the COMS can be expanded for various studies.

  • In the COMS satellite mission operation, more large meteorological images such as Full Disk(FD) image or 2 adjacent Extended Northern Hemisphere(ENH) images can be taken by the time shift of East West Station Keeping(EWSK) maneuver when the EWSK conflicts with the large images. In this study an analytical approach based on probability of the conflict is proposed for theoretical analysis about the EWSK time shift to avoid the conflict with FD or 2 ENH images. The EWSK time shift has been applied to the COMS operation as a test, too. The theoretical study result and test operation outcome are synthesized to provide the analysis of impact on the COMS fuel consumption by the EWSK time shift. This study is expected to contribute to the maximization of COMS meteorological mission application.

  • The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI), the world's first ocean color sensor operated in a geostationary orbit, can be utilized to mitigate damages by monitoring marine disasters in real time such as red tides, green algae, sargassum, cold pools, typhoons, and so on. In this paper, we described a methodology and procedure for processing GOCI data in order to maximize its utilization potential. The GOCI data processing procedure is divided into data reception, data processing, and data distribution. The kinds of GOCI data are classified as raw, level 1, and level 2. "Raw" refers to an unstructured data type immediately generated after reception by satellite communications. Level 1 is defined as a radiance data type of two dimensions, generated after radiometric and geometric corrections for raw data. Level 2 indicates an ocean color data type from level-1 data using ocean color algorithms.

  • National Meteorological Satellite Center(NMSC) has produced Sea Surface Temperature (SST) using Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite(COMS) data since April 2011. In this study, we have developed a new regional COMS SST algorithm optimized within the North-West Pacific Ocean area based on the Multi-Channel SST(MCSST) method and made a composite SST using polar orbit satellites as well as the COMS data. In order to retrieve the optimized SST at Northwest Pacific, we carried out a colocation process of COMS and in-situ buoy data to make coefficients of the MCSST algorithm through the new cloud masking including contaminant pixels and quality control processes of buoy data. And then, we have estimated the composite SST through the optimal interpolation method developed by National Institute of Meteorological Science(NIMS). We used four satellites SST data including COMS, NOAA-18/19(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-18/19), and GCOM-W1(Global Change Observation Mission-Water 1). As a result, the root mean square error ofthe composite SST for the period of July 2012 to June 2013 was $0.95^{\circ}C$ in comparison with in-situ buoy data.

  • In this paper, impacts on the COMS MI images during the COMS eclipse period were analyzed and the method to eliminate the contaminated area was investigated. Main effect on the meteorological images during the eclipse is a stripping effect due to a strong stray light. The quantitative analyses were conducted during the COMS In-Orbit-Test period and the impacts of the stray light on the four infrared channels of the COMS MI according to the distance with respect to the Sun were examined. Based on the typical case of the stray light influence on the infrared channel of the MI, the intensity of contamination due to the stray light was investigated for each channel using the computed COMS eclipse information. The effectiveness of removal of a contaminated area by replacing the SWIR with the combined WINDOW channels was promising.

  • This paper described validation results of COMS Ka band antennas beam coverages which were developed by ETRI. After satellite launch, In Orbit Test(IOT) activities are stat to check spacecraft and payloads are still in healthy condition after launch. During IOT phase, ETRI measured radiation patterns of COMS Ka band antennas and compare with ground test(CATR) results. The antenna patterns similarity between IOT results and CATR results show that COMS Ka band antenna withstand launch vibration and in the good healthy condition. After IOT, ETRI performed field test for beam coverage measurements with vehicle to check if Ka band beam coverage are formed well as designed. For the beam coverage measurement, 17 points were selected over the Korean peninsula. The field measurement data were very similar with CATR data and this confirms that beam coverage are formed well over the Korean peninsula as expected.

  • COMS (Communication Ocean and Meteorological Satellite), the Korea's first geostationary Earth observation satellite, started to operate 24 hours to observe Land/Ocean/Atmosphere with the MI (Meteorological Imager) and GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager). After the successful completion of the IOT (In-Orbit Test), the satellite is in normal operation from April of 2011. This paper describes an algorithm for scan mirror emissivity compensation of the COMS MI and its software implementation.

  • Chollian bipropellant propulsion system is composed of one main engine for orbit transfer and fourteen thrusters for on-station operations. The design and analyses of the propulsion system were carried out in the framework of international collaboration. Following the system integration and testings required, the Chollian was transported to Kourou Space Center in French Guiana and launched successfully. After it separated from the launcher, the propulsion system was initialised automatically. Then three times of main engine firing were successfully performed, and the target obit insertion was accomplished.
