  • The purpose of this study was to develop the first social work values scale in Korea. Its development would be expected to increase empirical studies on social work values. Based upon the literature review of social work values, the examination of codes of ethics as well as existing scales, and the comments from professionals in this field, 62 preliminary items were developed. Preliminary items were evaluated with a total of 521 social workers who were working in various fields of social work in Seoul and surrounding areas. A series of exploratory factor analyses were conducted to find out the optimal structure of the scale. After deleting 29 items with low factor loadings or being cross-loaded, the scale is composed of three factors with each factor having 11 items. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the factor structure of the scale obtained by exploratory factor analysis. The first factor was named autonomy, the second factor was named equality, and third factor was named paternalistic intervention. Each component of the social work values scale is found to be reliable and valid.

  • Self-sufficiency of the female victims of prostitution has been understood as a 'result' at a particular moment focusing on an economic self-sufficiency. Overcoming such limitation, this study originates from a problem posing that evaluating self-sufficiency of the female victims of prostitution should be approached as a series of 'processes' in which experiences of the victims are integrated. The methodology of the study included a questionnaire survey with questions designed based on the self-sufficiency experiences which were analyzed through an in-depth interview with 34 female victims of prostitution. The questionnaire survey was conducted with 243 female victims of prostitution, and construct validity and reliability were verified. As a result of an exploratory factor analysis, a validity of scale in four factors and 24 questions was verified. A reliability of each factor was high ranging from .823 to .871. It could be achieved to make a relatively invisible process of self-sufficiency visible by developing the scale. Subsequently it complements the existing concept of self-sufficiency and overcomes limitations of measuring its results, hence reflecting the reality of the self-sufficiency practices.

  • Improvements on the incumbent R&D project management structure and performance evaluation criteria in the telecommunication and broadcasting area have been called for. There have been attempts to develop alternative R&D project performance evaluation criteria. In an attempt to develop an alternative measure, this study integrates two different perspectives on R&D projects and various criteria currently being used by many foreign and domestic institutes. As a result, we have developed an alternative R&D project performance evaluation instrument. Then, we have applied the instrument to Korean cases in order to validate it. The new R&D project performance evaluation criteria can contribute to an improvement on the management of R&D projects in the telecommunication and broadcasting area.

  • Grouped multivariate data can be tested for differences between two or more groups using multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA). However, this method cannot be used if several assumptions of MANOVA are violated. In this case, multidimensional scaling (MDS) and analysis of distance (AOD) can be applied to grouped dissimilarities based on the various distances. A permutation test is a non-parametric method that can also be used to test differences between groups. MDS is used to calculate the coordinates of observations from dissimilarities and AOD is useful for finding group structure using the coordinates. In particular, AOD is mathematically associated with MANOVA if using the Euclidean distance when computing dissimilarities. In this paper, we study the between and within group structure by applying MDS and AOD to the grouped dissimilarities. In addition, we propose a new test statistic using the group structure for the permutation test. Finally, we investigate the relationship between AOD and MANOVA from dissimilarities based on the Euclidean distance.

  • The effect of water back-flushing period (FT) was investigated in hybrid process of carbon fiber microfiltration membrane and photocatalyst for advanced drinking water treatment in this study, and compared with the previous study using alumina ultrafiltration membrane. The FT was changed in the range of 2~10 min with fixed 10 sec of BT. Then, the FT effects on resistance of membrane fouling ($R_f$), permeate flux (J) and total permeate volume ($V_T$) were observed during total filtration time of 180 min. As decreasing FT, $R_f$ decreased and J increased, which was same with the previous result using alumina ultrafiltration membrane. The treatment efficiency of turbidity was high beyond 99.2%, and the effect of FT was not shown on treatment efficiency of turbidity, which was different with the previous result. The treatment efficiency of organic matters was the lowest value of 65.6% at NBF, and it increased as decreasing FT, which was different with the previous result, too. The reason was that the membrane fouling phenomena could show a different mechanism depending on ceramic membrane materials.

  • To quantify an concept we often use Likert summated rating scale of original or standardized variables in case the variables are relatively less. When variables have different scales, standardized values tends to be used rather than the original values. This is also true in evaluating systems. For example, we may use standardized values of local tax levy, population, and etc. and use the summed value of the standardized values to access the degrees of development. In this paper, we propose using a data-driven weighted sum for a scoring system and the way how to obtain the weights. We apply the proposed method to a real data set and find that proposed method is better than the usual summated rating scale.
