  • Samples were obtained with a set net during 7 months between March and October in 1987 off the coast of Hwasun, southern part of Cheju Island. Most of organisms, representing 36 species, were less than 20cm(96%) in length, and 30g(74%) in weight. The four most abundant species were jack mackerel, Trachurus japonicus ; squid, Todarodes pacificus ; mackerel, Scomber japonicus ; and Apogon semilineatus, which comprised about 89% of the total individuals and about 70% of the total weight. Diversity index, the number of species and information index for individual were high in early spring, even though biomass was not abundant. On the other hand, diversity index and information index for individual were relatively high in August in spite of low occurrence of the species number. A cluster analysis of 24 species which appeared more than twice during the 7 samplings were illustrated from the similarity matrix. All of the 24species were grouped at the 0.14 similarity level. They were divided into four groups at 0.50 level.

  • The endangered Pseudopungtungia tenuicorpa were reintroduced to the Jojongcheon Stream in the Hangang River 2011~2012 as part of the restoration project. Since then, the restoration project has been evaluated as a failure because the P. tenuicorpa were not collected from the discharge site 2014~2016. This study was conducted 2017~2019 to verify that the P. tenuicorpa restoration project failed. Six locations were selected, including the discharge site, and the fish collection method used skimming nets, cast nets, long bag set nets, and scuba diving. In the survey results, 13 individuals were collected in a 0.5 km section, including the discharge station. The P. tenuicorpa habitat was approximately at a water depth of 0.5 m to 2 m in run water flow with the boulders and rocks. The age of the collected P. tenuicorpa were 0+ to 3-years-old, and the generation alternation was occurring stably. Thus, the P. tenuicorpa restoration project was evaluated as partially-successful, as the P. tenuicorpa, re-introduced to the Jojongcheon Stream, settled in its habitat with stable generation alternation.

  • Monthly variation in species composition was determined using fish samples collected by a beach seine between October 2013 and September 2014 in the eelgrass bed in Aenggang Bay, Namhae, Gyeongsangnamdo. A total of 3,174 individuals of 35 species, amounting to 3,137 g were collected. The dominant species was Gymnogobius heptacanthus, followed by Pholis nebulosa, Rudarius ercodes, Favonigobius gymnauchen and Hypodytes rubripinnis. Almost all fish collected were small in size or juveniles. Seasonal variation of species composition showed that the dominant species, used the shallow area of the eelgrass bed as a nursery ground and moved to a deeper water as they grew. Saurida elongata, Inimicus japonicus, Sphyraena pinguis, and Arothron hispidus, were first reported in an eelgrass bed in the southern coastal water.

  • Change in fish species composition after the Hebei Spirit oil spill in December 2007 off Taean were determined by analysis of samples collected in Mailpo beach, 10 km south from the oil spill site and polluted by the crude oil. Fish samples were collected by a beach seine in the shallow water at Malipo beach during the low tide of the new moon from February 2008 to December 2009. Five seine hauls were made during the day and the night in each sampling time. Monthly day and night samples did not show the significant differences in species composition. A total of 21 species, 1,032 individuals and 6,544 g of fish were collected in 2008, and 31 species, 4,206 individuals and 35,659 g of fish in 2009. The species collected were composed of the small-sized fish or juveniles. Abundant fishes were the resident species in coastal water, and the migrants were low in abundance. Among the fish occurred, Chelon haematochelius, Sebastes schlegelii, Takifugu niphobles and Pleuronectes yokohamae were predominated in abundance of both years. Monthly fish abundance and species diversity in 2008 were significantly lower than those in 2009. A few number of resident fish were collected from February to June 2008 showing the lowest in May 2008, and fish abundance increased from July 2008. The number of species and abundance of fish in 2009 were increased in spring as the temperature raised, showed a peak in summer and decreased in autumn. This monthly variation in fish species composition and abundance was similar to those in the non-polluted water in other temperate waters. Low fish abundance during several months after oil spill was considered to be related to the residual oil in the water and habitat disturbance due to oil cleaning activity in the beach. Monthly fish species compositions after September 2008 were similar to those of 2009 suggested that the impact on the shallow water fish by the oil residuals was not too significant at least to the fish species composition after September 2008.

  • Monthly variation in species composition of shallow water fish in Cheonsu Bay were determined using samples collected by a beach seine in the shallow water at Namdang beach from April 2010 to March 2011. The species composition were compared to the data obtained in 1885~86 and in 1993, and factors affecting the long-term change in species composition were analyzed. Fish collected during the study were 25 species, 2,194 individuals and 16,762 g. Chelon haematocheilus were predominated in abundance, accounting 68.5% in the number of individuals. A few number of fish were collected during the cold months from November to April. Abundance was high from July to September by a large catch of juveniles of pelagic fish. Species composition in 1993 did not differ significantly from that in 1985~86 although Fabonigobius gymnauchen living in the fine sediments were increased in abundance. Abundance increase of this gobiid fish was considered to be related to the sedimentation of fine particles due to weakened water circulation after dike construction. The number of species and catch amount in 2010~11 were significantly decreased comparing to those of the former periods; especially in pelagic fish and benthic fish, but C. haematocheilus were greatly increased in abundance. C. haematocheilus is an estuarine fish being able to survive in relatively poor quality of water. This increase seems to be related to fish larvae from the culture net cages recently installed in the inner bay. Recent decrease in abundance of shallow water fish suggested that water quality has been gradually getting poor and recently attained over a critical level for the nursery function of fish.

  • In this paper, we describe a sound source localization(SSL) system which can be applied to mobile robot and automatic control systems. Usually the SSL method finds the Interaural Time Difference, the Interaural Level Difference, and uses the geometrical principle of microphone array. But here we proposed another approach based on the deep neural network to obtain the horizontal directional angle(azimuth) of the sound source. We pick up the sound source signals from the two microphones attached symmetrically on both sides of the robot to imitate the human ears. Here, we use difference of spectral distributions of sounds obtained from two microphones to train the network. We train the network with the data obtained at the multiples of 10 degrees and test with several data obtained at the random degrees. The result shows quite promising validity of our approach.
