  • This study contemplates spatial context of startup in manufacturing, mainly analyzing job creation effects of time lag of startups in manufacturing at different technology levels. Using DID model, we found that each region including capital, non-capital and metropolitan area shows different job creation effects of time lag. In capial region, startup cohort in high R&D intensity manufacturing was found to show short-term job creation effects, but in non-capital region, long-term job creation effects was found with the one in medium-high R&D intensity manufacturing. In case of metropolitan area, we couldn't find much evidence of job creation effects that was statistically significant. The result of analysis implied that, in capital region, startup support policies, targeting at high R&D intensity manufacturing, ought to be focused on scale-up of startups that survived for a certain period. And non-capital area and some of metropolitan areas in non-capital region that have comparatively inferior infrastructure and brain-drain problems as well should focus on fostering startups in medium-high R&D intensity manufacturing in a long-term perspective and utilize their traditional manufacturing base.

However, previous studies related to unicorn companies are focused on 'event studies' and 'case studies' such as characteristics of founders, environmental factors, business models and success/failure cases of companies already recognized as unicorns rather than a multifaceted approach. The occurrence of unicorn companies and Macroscopic analysis of related factors is lacking. Against this background, this study are considering the characteristics of unicorns examined through previous research and the current status unicorns with a high proportion of technology companies, the purpose was to analyze the impact of the country's technological competitiveness, such as 'technology human resource index', 'R&D index', and 'technology infrastructure index', on the increase in unicorn companies. For statistical analysis, data published by various international organizations, the Bank of Korea, and Statistics Korea from 2017 to 2020 and unicorn company data compiled by CB Insights were used as panel data for 44 countries to be tested by multiple regression analysis. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that the number of science majors had a positive (+) effect on the increase of unicorn companies in the case of technology human resource index, and in the case of R&D index, the total amount of R&D investment had a positive (+) effect on the increase of unicorn companies, while the number of Triad Patents Families and the number of scientific and technological papers published had a negative (-) effect on the increase of unicorn companies. Finally, in the case of technology infrastructure index, it was confirmed that the number of the world's 500th-ranked universities had a positive (+) effect on the increase of unicorn companies. This study is the first to reveal the causal relationship between national technological competitiveness and unicorn company growth based on country-specific and time-series empirical data, which were insufficiently covered in previous studies. and compared to the UN's ranking of the global industrial competitiveness index and the OECD's total R&D investment by country, Korea is considered to have technological and growth potential, while the number of unicorn companies driving growth as leaders of the innovative economy is relatively small, so the research results can be used when establishing policies to discover and foster unicorn companies in the future.

  • As the technology commercialization of American universities has been greatly activated since the implementation of the Bayh Dole Act, that of Korean universities has been steadily increasing since the enactment of the Technology Transfer Promotion Act of 2000, due to numerous related laws, government support programs, and accumulated experience of technology transfer. However, the level of technology commercialization of domestic universities is still insufficient in comparison to that of advanced countries such as the United States. So, in this study, we tried to identify factors promoting technology transfer and start-ups in Korean universities by examining domestic prior researches carried out since 2000 using SLR (Systematic Literature Review) methodology. As a result of our analysis, researches in the field of technology transfer were the most studied while papers on start-up are actively increasing recently. As for factors influencing commercialization of technology, internal and external factors were identified. The former were categorized as human resource, technology and knowledge resource, financial resource, managing resource and strategy, university type, and education and culture, while the latter were grouped into consumer, region, and infrastructure. And then detailed factors were integrated in each field by systematic mapping. Our study has its meaning in that it systematically accumulated the results of researches on technological commercialization of Korean universities and identified areas that are lacking or need additional research. And the integrated promoting factors for technology transfer or start-up can also be used as a checklist for universities or public institutes.
