  • In this work, we predict a true fracture strain using load-displacement curves from tensile test and finite element analysis (FEA), and suggest a method for acquiring true stress-strain (SS) curves by predicted fracture strain. We first derived the true SS curve up to necking point from load-displacement curve. As the beginning, the posterior necking part of true SS curve is linearly extrapolated with the slope at necking point. The whole SS curve is then adopted for FE simulation of tensile test. The Bridgman factor or suitable plate correction factors are applied to pre and post FEA. In the load-true strain curve from FEA, the true fracture strain is determined as the matching point to test fracture load. The determined true strain is validated by comparing with test fracture strain. Finally, we complete the true SS curve by combining the prior necking part and linear part, the latter of which connects necking and predicted fracture points.

  • In this study, we enhance the numerical approach of Lee et al.$^{(1)}$ to spherical indentation technique for property evaluation of hyper-elastic rubber. We first determine the friction coefficient between rubber and indenter in a practical viewpoint. We perform finite element numerical simulations for deeper indentation depth. An optimal data acquisition spot is selected, which features sufficiently large strain energy density and negligible frictional effect. We then improve two normalized functions mapping an indentation load vs. deflection curve into a strain energy density vs. first invariant curve, the latter of which in turn gives the Yeoh-model constants. The enhanced spherical indentation approach produces the rubber material properties with an average error of less than 3%.

  • The split Hokinson pressure bar(SHPB) test has been used to find the mechanical property of materials at high strain rate. A tensile split Hopkinson pressure bar test system is developed and the threaded tensile specimen and the split collar are placed between elastic bars. When the compressive elastic wave generated by a striker is transferred from the transmit bar to the incident bar, some elastic wave is reflected at the threaded parts of the specimen and the transmit bar. This reflected wave can interfere with the transmitted wave. A proper length of elastic bars and the location of strain gage in these elastic bars are determined to avoid this interference. In order to avoid the interference of elastic wave reflected at the threaded parts of specimen and elastic bar, the length of transmit bar must be longer than that of incident bar. Strain gage in transmit bar must be located as close as possible from the interface of a transmit bar and specimen. In the developed tensile SHPB test system, A12011-T3 and A17075-T6 are tested to get the true stress-strain relation in the range of strain rate at $10^3/sec$

  • Tensile tests were conducted at low temperatures for the steel materials which are used for outer shell of the vessels making transit through the polar regions. The selected steel materials were GL-DH32, GL-DH36 and GL-EH36. In comparison with the results at room temperature, the yield stress increases approximately by 10 to 13 percent at $-30^{\circ}C$ and by 13 to 19 percent at $-50^{\circ}C$ while the tensile strength increases about by 9 percent at $-30^{\circ}C$ and 11 to 14 percent at $-50^{\circ}C$. To obtain true stress-true strain, i.e. correct plastic hardening characteristics, Bridgman's(1952) necking correction formula was introduced taking triaxial state of stresses after onset of diffuse necking into consideration. Photographs of fractured surfaces were taken by using Scanning Electron Microscope immedately after tensile tests completed and one for GL-EH36 has been presented in this paper.

  • In finite element method (FEM) simulations, constitutive models are widely used and developed to represent a wide range of true stress-strain curves using a small number of modeling parameters. Nevertheless, many studies has been conducted to find a suitable constitutive model and optimal modeling parameters to represent experimentally obtained true stress-strain curves. Therefore, in this study, a new constitutive modeling approach using the combined Swift and Voce model is suggested, and confirmed through comparisons of the experimental results with the FEM simulation results.

  • Structures are often subjected to various types of loading such as static, dynamic, or impact loading. Therefore, experimental and numerical methods have been employed to find adequate material properties according to the conditions. The Split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test has frequently been used to test engineering materials, particularly those used under high strain rates. In this study, the compressive deformation behaviors of aluminum alloy under impact conditions have been investigated by means of the SHPB test. The experimental results were then compared with those of finite element analyses. It was shown that reasonably good agreement with the true stress-strain curves was obtained at strain rates ranging from 1000 $s^{-1}$ to 2000 $s^{-1}$. When the strain rate increased by 30%, the peak stress in particular increased by 17%, and the strain also increased by 20%.

  • This paper deals with the determination of mechanical properties of various galvanized steel sheets that are used for fabricating automobile bodies; the instrumented indentation technique and finite element analysis were used for the determination. First, tensile tests were conducted to obtain the true stress-true strain curves of galvanized steel sheets with various thicknesses. Load-deformation curves were then obtained by using the instrumented indentation testing machine, and they were compared with load-deformation curves obtained by finite element analysis. Further, true stress-true strain curves were obtained at the optimal observation point by finite element analysis.

  • In order to develop stretchable substrates for wearable packaging applications, the variation behavior of elastic modulus was evaluated for transparent PDMS Sylgard 184 and black PDMS Sylgard 170 as a function of the base/curing agent mixing ratio. Both for Sylgard 184 and Sylgard 170, the true elastic modulus evaluated on a true stress-true strain curve was higher more than two times compared to the engineering elastic modulus obtained from an engineering stres-sengineering strain curve, and their difference became larger with increasing the stiffness of the PDMS. Sylgard 184 exhibited a maximum engineering elastic modulus of 1.74 MPa and a maximum true elastic modulus of 3.57 MPa at the base/curing agent mixing ratio of 10. A maximum engineering elastic modulus of 1.51 MPa and a maximum true elastic modulus of 3.64 MPa were obtained for Sylgard 170 at the base/curing agent mixing ratio of 2.
