  • A magnetic fluid separation technology was confirmed to be very effective to remove the suspended solids from contaminated water. We have surveyed on the effects of operating variables on the characteristics of suspended solids(SS) removal investigated through the test runs using magnetic powder. Magnetic flocculation here formed by adsorbing fine magnetites on the surface of suspended solid was observed. The strength of magnet was of significance in determining the SS removal efficiency.

  • This study uses the distributed parameter systems resented by the spatial discretization technique. In this paper, the distributed parameter systems are converted into lumped parameter systems, End fast Walsh transform and the Picard's iteration method are allied to analysis the state of the systems. This thesis presents a new algorithm which usefully exercises the optimal contro1 in the distributed parameter systems. In exercising the optimal control of the distributed parameter systems, the excellent consequences are found without using the existing decentralized contro1 or hierarchical control method. This study can be applied to the linear time-varying systems and the non-linear systems. Farther researches are required to solve the problems of convergence in case of the numerous applicable intervals. The simulation proves the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • MacCormack's method is an explicit, second order finite difference scheme that is widely used in the solution of hyperbolic partial differential equations. Apparently, however, it has shown entropy violations under small discontinuity. This non-physical shock grows fast and eventually all the meaningful information of the solution disappears. Some modifications of MacCormack's methods follow ideas of central schemes with an advantage of second order accuracy for space and conserve the high order accuracy for time step also. Numerical results are shown to perform well for the one-dimensional Burgers' equation and Euler equations gas dynamic.

  • The fractal advection-diffusion equation (ADE) is a generalization of the classical AdE in which the second-order derivative is replaced with a fractal order derivative. While the fractal ADE have been analyzed with a stochastic process In the Fourier and Laplace space so far, in this study a fractal ADE for describing solute transport in rivers is derived with a finite difference scheme in the real space. This derivation with a finite difference scheme gives the hint how the fractal derivative order and fractal diffusion coefficient can be estimated physically In contrast to the classical ADE, the fractal ADE is expected to be able to provide solutions that resemble the highly skewed and heavy-tailed time-concentration distribution curves of contaminant plumes observed in rivers.

  • In this study, an analytical model is proposed to estimate the buckling responses of tapered piles. The governing differential equation of the soil-pile system considering the tapering and side friction of the pile and the soil nonhomogeneity is derived, which is numerically integrated by the Runge-Kutta method and then the eigenvalue of bucking load is determined by Regula-Falsi algorithm. For a cylindrical pile, the results obtained from this study are found to compare well with those reported in literature. Illustrative examples for buckling load and stress as well as buckled shape are provided to investigate the effects of dimensionless parameters related to the soil-pile system.

  • This paper presents a new analytical model for estimating the free vibration of tapered friction piles. The governing differential equation for the free vibration of statically axially-loaded piles embedded in non-homogeneous soil is derived. The equation is numerically integrated by the Runge-Kutta method, and then the eigenvalue of natural frequency is determined by the Regula-Falsi scheme. For a cylindrical non-tapered pile, the computed natural frequencies compare well with the available data from literature. Numerical examples are presented to investigate the effects of the tapering, the skin friction resistance, the end condition of the pile, the vertical compressive loading, and the soil non-homogeneity on the natural frequency and mode shape of tapered friction piles.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present both the natural frequencies and the buckling loads of beam-columns on Winkler-type foundations. The ordinary differential equations governing the free vibrations and the buckling loads of beam-columns on Winkler-type foundation are derived as nondimensional forms. The Runge-Kutta method and Determinant Search method are used to perform the integration of the differential equations and to determine the eigenvalues(natural frequencies and buckling loads), respectively. Hinged-hinged and damped-clamped end constraints are applied in numerical examples. The relation between frequency parameter and elastic foundation parameter is presented in figure. The effects of axial loads on the natural frequencies of beam-columns on elastic foundations are investigated and the relation between buckling load parameter and elastic foundation parameter is also analyzed. The relation between foundation rested ratio and frequency parameter, buckling load parameter are investigated. The beam-columns on non-homogeneous elastic foundation are analyzed and typical mode shapes are also presented.

  • Recently, with the development of technology, intuitive understanding of abstract mathematical concepts through visualizations is growing in popularity within college mathematics. In this study, we introduce free visualization tools developed for better understanding of topics which students learn in Calculus. We visualize important concepts of Calculus as much as we can according to the order of most Calculus textbooks. In this process, we utilized a well-known, free mathematical software called GeoGebra. Finally, we discuss our experience with visualizations in Calculus using GeoGebra in our class and discuss how it can be effectively adopted to other university math classes and high school math education.

  • 1,3-Bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU, Carmustine)-loaded poly(D, L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA, lactide/glycolide mole ratio 75 : 25) microparticles were prepared and fabricated into wafers in an attempt to study the possibility for the treatment of malignant glioma by direct inserting the wafers to the tumor or the cavity remained after surgical resection of the tumor. SEM observation of the microparticles prepared by spray drying method revealed that the microparticles were spherical, i. e. microspheres. Significant reduction of the crystallinity of BCNU encapsulated in PLGA was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry analyses of the BCNU-loaded PLGA microparticles. Release pattern of BCNU was dependent on several preparation parameters, such as the molecular weight and concentration of PLGA, and initial BCNU loading amount, etc. In vitro release of BCNU was prolonged over 8 weeks with close to zero-order release pattern after initial burst effect. Observations of morphological change of wafers and pH change of release media during release test period confirmed that hydration and degradation of PLGA would be facilitated with an increase of BCNU-loading amount.

  • This paper presents a highly efficient moving least squares finite difference method (MLS FDM) for a heat transfer problem of bi-material with interfacial boundary. The MLS FDM directly discretizes governing differential equations based on a node set without a grid structure. In the method, difference equations are constructed by the Taylor polynomial expanded by moving least squares method. The wedge function is designed on the concept of hyperplane function and is embedded in the derivative approximation formula on the moving least squares sense. Thus interfacial singular behavior like normal derivative jump is naturally modeled and the merit of MLS FDM in fast derivative computation is assured. Numerical experiments for heat transfer problem of bi-material with different heat conductivities show that the developed method achieves high efficiency as well as good accuracy in interface problems.
