  • The Yemi Breccia has been reported as a separate formation near Yemi area, Kangwondo. This formation overlies the Maggot Formation of the Joseon Supergroup unconformably, and is overlain by the Goseong Shale conformably. Based on the field observation and textural examination of the Yemi Breccia, the breccia beds are interpreted as soluton-collapse breccia beds, which were formed by the dissolution of the pre-existing evaporites. The evaporites were precipitated during the deposition of the upper part of the Maggot Formation. Therefore, the Yemi Breccia should not be regarded as a separate formation, instead, it should be considered to be a upper part of the Maggot Formation. This implies that the overlying Goseong Shale and Goseong Limestone can be correlated with the Jigunsan and Duwibong Formtions, respectively.

  • Hydrogeological survey related to groundwater condifiors was performed at the study area in Gyukpo, BuanGun, ChunlabukDo to express the relationships between groundwater conditions and the geologic structures such as joints, faults and beddings in bedrock About 200 joints and sjgnfficant faults were measured in this area. Typically, The fracture analysis on cores of 7 boreholes was tried to quantify fracture numerically. Groundwater level was periodically measured for three months. The packer tests of about 175 were carried out in 7 boreholes. As the result, Fractures are locaHy developed as ground water bearing zone and an average hydraulic conductivity of bedrock is $1{\times}10^{-5}cm/sec$ in this area the hydraulic conductivity of this area is correlated with fracture frequency value of F15 and is also well correlated with fracture developed and depth. In accordance with depth, fracture frequency and hydraulic conductivity are decreased. Hydraulic conductivity of granite along depth shows an obiouse change in values but that of sedimentary rocks do not shows changeless. Groundwater movement in the bedrocks of the study area affected not by joints but faults developed in the different rock boundary. In the northern part of this area, The differences of hydraulic conductivity between granite and sedimentary rocks give rise abrsspt at difference in groundwater leveL In the southern part of the study area, there is no different in groundwater level of both same rock types.

  • Properties of sliding materials are dependent on the lithology because debris is the product of rock weathering processes. In order to characterize transportation behavior of debris dependent of debris types, this study selected 26 debris flows over three areas composed with different rock weathering types and topographic conditions. Analyses of lithology, weathering, and topographic characteristics were performed by detailed field survey. Based on the field survey data, transportation behavior of debris was studied at the aspect of the relationship of grain size and volume of debris as well as topographic conditions. According to the study results, change of slope angle is very influential factor on runout distance of debris among the topographic factors. Because the sliding velocity and the energy of debris are frequently changed and more irregular on an undulating slope, the unout distance of debris is larger than that of an uniformly dipping slope. Runout distance of debris is also influenced by volume and grain size of debris. Volume of debris in the gabbro is four or five times larger than that of the granite area because it is controlled by the lithology. Considered with grain size distribution, runout distance of debris is longer in the gabbro area which is composed with irregular grain size bearing large corestones than that in the medium grained granite area.

  • Mafic granulite xenoliths are found in precambrian porphyroblastic gneiss of the Mt. Jiri area, SW Sobaegsan massif, Korea. The xenoliths are rounded to ellipsoidal in shape, 50-100 cm in length and coarse-grained with granoblastic and foliated texture. The xenoliths consist of orthopyroxene, garnet, biotite, plagioclase, quartz, ilmenite and secondary orthoamphibole. Orthopyroxene is mostly resorbed and rimmed by coronitic orthoamphiboles. Garnets occur as porphyblasts and are zoned with higher pyrope content in cores than in rims. Geothermo-barometry results yield conditions of about $800-850^{\circ}C$, 6 kb and $500^{\circ}C$, 4 kb for early and retrograde stages of equilibration, respectively. According to available geochronological data, it is suggested that the granulite facies metamorphism occurred prior to 2.1-1.9Ga and that the area was superimposed by the high-grade (over $600-700^{\circ}C$) metamorphism between 1.9-1.7Ga, followed by cooling during uplift.

  • Based on mineral assemblages, field occurrences, the volcanic rocks distributed in the Geumdang Island area are divided into three types: rhyolite, porphyritic rhyolite and intermediated dyke rock. In a diagram of [TAS (total alkali-silica)], rhyolites and porphyritic rhyolites belong to the rhyolite-dacite field and rhyolite field, respectively. As to the times when the rhyolite and porphyritic rhyolite rocks were formed a whole rock K-Ar age was obtained. These absolute age determinations have revealed that the former (rhyolite) has an age of 76-78 Ma and belongs to the Late Cretaceous (Campanian) and the latter (porphyritic rhyolite) is 71-72 Ma in age and thus belongs to the boundary between the Campanian and Maastrichtian. These geological ages are associated with the igneous activity of the Yuchon Group which occurred vigorously in the southern part of the Korean peninsula during the Late Cretaceous. The various geological ages of volcanic rocks distributed in the southwestern part of the peninsula and of igneous rocks found in the Cretaceous formation which contain a wide variety of minerals indicate that in this area, volcanic activities continued vigorously as a result of the collision of the Eurasian and Pacific Plates between 108-71 Ma.

  • Andong and Imha reservoir adjoins each other, but turbid water shows too much different when it rains. The characteristics of geological rock in basin and agricultural area around river boundary are pointed out as the major reason of turbid water of Imha reservoir. This study analyzed rock type of topsoil layer using soil map by National Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology (NIAST). Among rock types, sedimentary rock affects on the occurrence of turbid water. In the analysis of sedimentary rock type, the distribution of sedimentary rock of Imha basin shows 1.87 times higher than that of Andong basin. Also, the distribution of sedimentary rock of Imha basin shows higher than that of Andong basin within 1,600m from river channel in according to the buffer zone of river boundary. And Agricultural area of Imha basin shows higher than that of Andong basin in analysis of land cover within 1,600 m from river channel. As this agricultural characteristics of Imha basin, cover management factor of Imha basin represents more higher that that of Andong basin.

  • This study is performed to investigate the cause of slope failure and to suggest suitable stabilization methods for the failed rock slopes. The slope which is located along the national highway between Maesan and Kakok in Dangjin-gun failed during the construction of roads. Site investigation, drilling program, field measurements, rainfall records, and stability analyses are used to investigate the cause of the slope failure. The problem determining the cut-slope angle based on the existing design manual for the construction of roads is reviewed based on the case history given in this paper. If weakness layer and geological structures such as folds and faults are developed in a slope, slope failure is possible even though the direction of slope and the direction of discontinuities depart more than $30^{\circ}$.

  • Pebble-bearing clastic carbonate rock which has been found in and around the Jeongseon and Okgye through the field survey was studied in petrological and mineralogical characteristics. We define the clastic carbonate rocks as 'Dolomite-pebble bearing fine sand-sized dolostone, or grainstone', which are characterized by the existence of dolomite single grains and Mg-phengite, and by the subsequent formation of secondary calcite cements. These attributes correspond well with those of the typical Haengmae Formation from Haengmae-dong, Mitan-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, thus the carbonate rocks in the Jeongseon and Okgye areas must belong to the Haengmae Formation. The result suggests that the Haengmae Formation is an independent unit among the Paleozoic lithostratigraphic units in Taebaek basin and lies in the upper part of Jeongseon and Sukbyungsan Formations under the Hongjeom Formation of Pyeongan Supergroup.

  • Dominant rock types of stones used presently for cooking utensils in Korea are pyroxenite, breccia and biotite diorite. Pyroxenite and biotite diorite relatively abundant in mafic minerals have higher specific gravities of 3.0 than breccia of 2.5. Breccia shows the highest absorption (2.9%) among three stones used as cooking utensils and pH value of three stone types shows the alkaline range of 9.7 to 9.9. Among the studied stones used for cooking utensils, biotite diorite is the most durable against abrasion and has the highest strength and therefore, it is expected to be used effectively for the longest time except for other specific causes. Heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Co, Cr and Ni were leached lower than their detection limit (0.1 ppm) regardless of reaction time and initial pH value of solution. But the leached contents of Fe are various with rock types and leaching conditions and those by acidic solution are generally 1.8 to 31 times higher than those by neutral solution. Breccia and biotite diorite show the highest leached content of Fe in cases of neutral and acidic solutions, respectively. Standard criteria of leached heavy metals and macrominerals should be studied thoroughly to utilize stones for cooking utensils of high quality which are harmless to the human body. Also it is required to examine mon detailed abiochemical properties of various stone types used for cooking utensils.
