Estimation of Hydraulic Properties in Porous Media (다공성 매질의 수리특성 추정)

  • The analysis of Richards eq. requires data of the soil water retention function and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity. The soil water retention function was measured through the use of the developed apparatus and the saturated hydraulic conductivity was measured by the constant head method for each soil sample corresponding to the A, B, C types of SCS. In order to obtain one water retention function and one unsaturated hydraulic conductivity which represent each soil group, van Genuchten's eq. and Mualem's pore-structure model was chosen respectively. Parameters of van Genuchten's eq. are estimated for each soil group using data obtained in the experiments, and estimated values give a basis to analyze the unsaturated flow in the non-measured region efficiently.

The Estimation of the Constrained Modulus and the Coefficient of Consolidation from the Piezocone Penetration Test Data (피에조 콘 관입시험결과에 따른 구속탄성계수, 압밀계수 산정에 관한 연구)

  • Using the results of the Piezocone Penetration Test (PCPT) which were executed at the Yangsan-Mulgum site, the applicability of the interpretation methods for estimating the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) of soft clay was evaluated. At the same time, laboratory soil tests using the total of 172 undisturbed soft clay samples from the 44 regions of the Yangsan-Mulgum site were performed to study the differency in the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) compared to the results of PCPT. The calculated constrained modulus ($M_{\varepsilon}$) and coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) using the results of consolidation laboratory tests which are based upon the consolidation theory of Terzaghi were compared with the predicted constrained modulus ($M_p$) and coefficient of consolidation ($C_{v-{M_p}}$) from the PCPT. The relationship between the predicted constrained modulus ($M_p$) and the calculated constrained modulus($M_c$) were showed good correlation. The $M_p$ by the Jones & Rust method were showed mostly similar to the calculated constrained modulus ($M_c$). The relationship between the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) obtained from the consolidation tests and the calculated coefficient of consolidation ($C_{v-{M_p}}$) were showed a linear relationship. The results of the calculated coefficient of consolidation ($C_{v-{M_p}}$) were about 54% of the value of the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) obtained from the consolidation tests.

Iterative Low Rank Approximation for Image Denoising (영상 잡음 제거를 위한 반복적 저 계수 근사)

  • Nonlocal similarity of natural images leads to the fact that a patch matrix whose columns are similar patches of the reference patch has a low rank. Images corrupted by additive white Gaussian noises (AWGN) make their patch matrices to have a higher rank. The noise in the image can be reduced by obtaining low rank approximation of the patch matrices. In this paper, an image denoising algorithm is proposed, which first constructs the patch matrices by combining the similar patches of each reference patch, which is a part of the noisy image. For each patch matrix, the proposed algorithm calculates its low rank approximate, and then recovers the original image by aggregating the low rank estimates. The simulation results using widely accepted test images show that the proposed denoising algorithm outperforms four recent methods.

  • The condition of temperature gradients in asphaltic concrete (Ascon) pavement have been analyzed based on the data collected from 5 major sites in Korea. From this. considering heat transfer by insolation flux and air temperature within pavement slab. temperature variation on the surface of pavement was computed and numerical model using the theory of thermal conductivity was applied to estimate the temperature gradients in depth. To investigate the present condition of asphalt generally used in Korea. the asphalt property tests were applicated on 5 different AP-3 (AC 85~100), and AP-5 (AC 60~70) asphalts classified by penetration index. Uniaxial compression test and indirect tensile test were also carried out for varying temperature conditions to analyze the effect of temperature on the deformation characteristics of Ascon pavement by calculating the variation of static elastic modulus and layer coefficients.

Friction-dependent Slip Behavior of Imgok Fault under the Present-day Stress Field (현생 응력하에서 단층 마찰계수에 따른 임곡단층의 거동 가능성 해석)

  • We carried out geometrical, kinematic, and geomechanical analyses on a lineament (the Imgok fault) near Gangneung, observed in ASTER images and aerial photographs, and field surveys. Earthquake focal mechanism solutions, used to estimate the present-day stress state, revealed that the direction of maximum compression is approximately N$70^{\circ}$E and that the stress condition is in favor of either strike-slip or reverse movement on the fault. The strike of the fault is not ideal for slip under the present-day stress field and thus the fault has a low slip tendency. However, the fault may be able to slip if the frictional coefficient (${\mu}$), representing the resistance of the fault to slip, is sufficiently low (e.g., ${\mu}$ < 0.25).

Change of Nearshore Random Waves in Response to Sea-level Rise (해수면 상승에 따른 연안 지역 불규칙파의 변화)

  • In this study, a method has been developed for estimating the change of nearshore random waves in response to sea-level rise, by extending the method proposed for regular waves by Townend in 1994. The relative changes in wavelength, refraction coefficient, shoaling coefficient, and wave height for random waves are presented as functions of relative change in water depth. The changes in wavelength and refraction coefficient are calculated by using the significant wave period and principal wave direction in the regular-wave formulas. On the other hand, the changes in shoaling coefficient and wave height are calculated by using the formulas proposed for shoaling and transformation of random waves in the nearshore area including surf zone. The results are proposed in the form of both formulas and graphs. In particular, the relative change in wave height is compared with the result for regular waves.

Estimation of Undrained Shear Strength Using Piezocone Test (피에조 콘 시험을 이용한 점성토의 비배수 강도 추정)

  • Undrained shear strength of clay deposit is one of the most important properties in the design of geotechnical structures. The use of piezocone test is rapidly growing due to its merit that can measure the in-situ undrained shear strength continuously with less error. The reliability of the shear strength from piezocone test depends upon the cone factor applied. Many researchers have suggested different ranges of values for the factors. This study performs to find out the validity of the suggested values in Korea and their charateristics related to the mechanical properties of clay. Piezocone tests were performed at the site of pilot project of ground improvement at Yangsan-Mulgeum Gyeongnam to investigate the charateristics of piezocone factors. The piezocone fators$(N_{kt}, N_{ke}, N_{\Delta u})$ based on the undrained shear strength from quick triaxial compression test are generally within the suggested range. And there appears considerable relations between undrained shear strength and $(N_{kt}, N_{ke}, N_{\Delta u})$ and between preconsolidation pressure and $(N_{kt}, N_{ke})$, while plasticity index, rigidity index and friction ratio do not show any relations with cone factors. The results also reveal that factor $(N_{\Delta u})$ shows higher reliability than factors $(N_{kt} and N_{ke})$, which show smaller standard deviation, breadth of change and scattering.

A Study for Adfreeze Bond Strength Developed between Weathered Granite Soils and Aluminum Plate (동결된 화강풍화토와 알루미늄판 접촉면에서 발현되는 동착강도 측정 연구)

  • Bearing capacity of pile is governed by only skin friction in frozen ground condition, while it is generally governed both by skin friction and end bearing capacity in typically unfrozen ground condition. Skin friction force, which arises from the interaction between pile and frozen soils, is defined as adfreeze bond strength, and adfreeze bond strength is one of the most important key parameters for design of pile in frozen soils. Many studies have been carried out in order to analyze adfreeze bond strength characteristics over the last fifty years. However, many studies for adfreeze bond strength have been conducted with limited circumstances, since adfreeze bond strength is sensitively affected by various influence factors such as intrinsic material properties, pile surface roughness, and externally imposed testing conditions. In this study, direct shear test is carried out inside of large-scaled freezing chamber in order to analyze the adfreeze bond strength characteristics with varying freezing temperature and normal stress. Also, the relationship between adfreeze bond strength and shear strength of the frozen soil obtained from previous study was analyzed. The coefficient of adfreeze bond strength was evaluated in order to predict adfreeze bond strength based on shear strength, and coefficients suggested from this and previous studies were compared.

A Laboratory Study on Erosional Properties of Fine Cohesive Sediments from Saemankeum Artificial Lake (새만금 인공호 점착성 퇴적물의 침식특성에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to quantitatively estimate the erosional properties for cohesive sediment from Saemankeum artificial lake. A series of erosion tests were conducted with Chonbuk annular flume, which is the first one constructed in this country and verified with validities. Each erosion tests were conducted under a uniform bed condition but a different bed density respectively, and its critical shear stress for erosion(${\tau}_{ce}$) as well as the erosion rate coefficient (${\varepsilon}_M$) were determined quantitatively. Since the erosional properties of the cohesive sediments vary largely depending in the physico-chemical properties, such properties of Saemankeum sediments were also estimated and their effects on the erosional properties were analyzed. For Saemankeum sediments, it can be seen that ${\tau}_{ce}$ increases from $0.26N/m^2$ to $0.52N/m^2$ and ${\varepsilon}_M$ decreases exponentially from $14.28mg/cm^2\;hr$ to $6.02mg/cm^2\;hr$, as the bed density varies from $1.17g/cm^3$ to $1.34g/cm^3$. The erosional parameters of Saemankeum sediments are found to be remarkably different in quantity as compared with those for cohesive sediments from other sites. Particularly, ${\tau}_{ce}$ for Saemankeum sediments is known to be larger than that of Kunsan sediments but similar with that of Shihwa sediments, while ${\varepsilon}_M$ for Saemankeum sediments is shown to be smaller than that for Kunsan sediments.

An Empirical Analysis of the Aggregate Travel Demands of the Urban Households in Korea (우리나라 도시가구 거주자의 집계교통수요함수 분석)

  • 우리 국민의 교통수요행태를 분석하기 위하여 준이상수요체계(almost ideal demand system) 함수형태의 집계교통수요모형을 설정하였다. 대중교통수단으로서 시내버스, 시외버스, 택시, 기차, 전철이 그리고 개인교통수단으로서 연료비가 포함되었으며, 기타재화 및 서비스에 대한 소비지출이 함께 추정되었다. 추정에 이용된 자료는 통계청의 "도시가계연보"에 수록된 '전국 도시가구 소비지출'과 "물가통계"에 수록된 '전국 도시소비자 물가'이다. 추정결과 모형의 설명력을 나타내는 수정결정계수(adjusted-$R^2$)는 대부분 0.9 내외에서 높게 나타났다. 추정계수는 총 51개중에서 25개가 5% 수준에서 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 추정된 계수값을 이용하여 가격탄력성과 소득탄력성을 구하였다. 자기가격탄력성과 소득탄력성 추정치는 조금 높기는 하나 부호와 상대적 크기가 모두 예상과 일치하고 다른 연구결과들과 유사한 범위에 있다. 연료비에 대한 소득탄력성은 1.72로 가장 높게 나타났고, 대중교통수단은 0.03~0.49 사이에서 나타나므로 교통수단이 정상재임을 의미한다. 보상수요의 교차가격탄력성은 총 15개의 교차관계에서 12개의 관계가 상식과 일치한다. 다음 연구에서는 더 많은 시계열자료를 발굴하여, 장기간의 교통수요 변화에 대한 분석을 시도할 필요가 있다. 또한 초월대수함수나 동태함수 등 다양한 형태의 수요함수를 시도할 필요가 있다. 여러가지 형태의 교통수요함수추정을 통해서 우리 현실에 적합한 교통수요모형을 발견할 수 있을 것이다. 대도시와 중소도시 등 지역별 지출자료를 발굴하여 지역특성을 반영하는 교통수요함수의 추정도 필요하다.
