  • The purpose of this study is to examine the Korean social workers' level of social work values and advocacy(attitudes and strategies) and to verify the relations among social work education, social work advocacy and social work values by examining whether social work education influences social work advocacy and social work values, and whether social work values affect social work advocacy. Further, this study wishes to confirm not only the direct effect that social work education has on social work advocacy, but also how social work education indirectly influences social work advocacy through social work values as a mediator. The research of this study was conducted on 242 social workers who have obtained social worker licenses and are currently working in the community centers. As survey tools, this study utilized social work advocacy attitudes, social work advocacy strategies, outcomes of social work education, social work values, self-esteem and locus of control. Collected data were analyzed by using SPSS/PC+ 12.0 for descriptive analysis, Pearson's correlation, reliability analysis, exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression. The research hypothesis was established according to the analysis method of the testing mediation of Baron & Kenny (1986) in order to examine whether social work values intervene between social work education and social work advocacy. The results of the hypothesis test confirm that social work values on the social level serve as a mediator variable.

For this study, the qualitative research was carried out for six social workers who are in charge of case-management in social welfare agencies. From results of research, the three themes were derived, such as 'a field of crises and opportunities'. Anxiety and efforts to resolve the problem caused by the introduction of new and unfamiliar methods' and 'responding to the clients' situations changes'. Case managers have endeavored to indirectly provide services with new, but unaccustomed ways even in the situations with keeping non-contact and being given limited resources and actively explored the ways to utilize public services to respond to the clients' needs according to the changes of conditions. Therefore, the meaning of this research was concluded to be 'A breathtaking battle to the continuous challenge'. Based on the results of research, the competences equipped by case managers and the direction of their practices were suggested to improve the community welfare currently in the middle of dealing with With-Corona-Era.

  • This study, by proposing a case study of community radio, attempts to expand the horizon of academic and social discussion on the medium that has been disproportionately skewed towards discourses on alternative media, technology, and programming content. As residents of local community actively participate in the production process, they reconstruct their cultural identities. In that sense, community radio is a medium that makes it possible the re-negotiation and reconfiguration of cultural identities of local residents. That is to say, a case study on the specific ways in which community residents appropriate community radio in reconstructing their identities offers us some entry points where we may come up with a new perspective on the identity of community radio. The results of fieldwork show that community radio, as it is closely intertwined with the residents' participatory cultural practices, is a medium of 'lived culture' -i.e., a medium that contributes to the making of civility, communitarianism, and social network. Community radio, then, may be redefined as an interactive medium that contributes to the formation of social rapport and solidarity.

In the field of critical medical anthropology, the practice of health care programs explains that socio-cultural and political and economic factors can be the main variables besides the primary purpose of preventing and eradicating the disease. In the same vein, this study also analyzed how community-based health programs operate by various external factors. As a result, the Minga Ambiental program is a health program called Dengue Fever, which has been tended to be sustained and expanded by various actors, including politicians and corporations in countries and communities, despite concerns about effectiveness. In this case, this study found that health programs can be operated by political and economic relations different from their original purpose, and are intertwined in various social contexts by various actors in constructing health programs.

  • It has been said that there were many problems in a social welfare institution. Community welfare in Japan is being presented as an alternative solving these problems and underlying theories are deinstitutionalization, normalization, and community care. Recently, in Korea, these alternatives are connected with the logic that social welfare institutions are useless. But if we think the inborn duty of the social welfare institution, we can know the logic problem of these theories. Also, 'the socialization theory of social welfare institutions' has been presented as a solving method. But studies in Korea are having a partiality only to opening to community and are researched separately from community welfare. Under these problem perceptions, this study examined the construction contents of the community welfare in Japan, the relation of community welfare and social welfare institutions, the relation of the community welfare and the socialization theory of social welfare institutions, and the concept and content of the socialization theory of social welfare institutions. This study investigated the discussions in Japan, for studies in Korea are generally based on those of Japan and the domestic community welfare policy has been influenced immensely by Japan. The result of this study is as follows. Firstly, not the social welfare institution in a category of community welfare is excluded, but is prescribed as an essential post, a premise condition, and a composition post of the community welfare. Secondly, the socialization theory of social welfare institutions is also discussed in a category of the community welfare and in the side of community welfare development. Thirdly, the socialization theory of social welfare institutions is presented in the side of not only opening to community, but also a basic practice theory of the social welfare institution reformation including that.

  • To evaluate the impacts of the health education programs including smoking cessation, pap smear and breast self-examination(BSE), a community trial was conducted during one year from December 1996 to December 1997 in Kyongju City. Before health education, a base-line survey was implemented and the target population was allocated randomly to case and control groups. The case and control groups were divided into three categories which were smoking cessation, pap smear and BSE. The series of health education leaflets about anti-smoking, pap smear and BSE were mailed to case group and the evaluation survey was conducted at the end of this trial to compare the change of health related behaviours of case and control groups. Smoking prevalence of case group did not decline significantly after anti-smoking education but the cessation rates of the elderly and low educated were higher than others. The knowledge level of case group on the health risk associated with smoking was higher than that of control group and the willingness of case group to quit smoking was higher than the control group. The case group's compliance with pap smear for cervical cancer was more increased compared to control group after health education. Of the case group, the younger and lower educated women were screened at a higher rate than others. The knowledge level of case group on the risk factors of cervical cancer and how to prevent it was higher than that of control group. Nearly 60 percent of case group reported that the health education leaflet influenced them to have the pap smear. The unscreened cases were highly motivated to get the pap smear test in the future.

  • This study was conducted to examine the relationship among health concern, health practice and ADL of elderly staying at home in a rural community and their affecting factors. Data were collected through direct interviews made with 480 old people aged more than sixty-five from November 15, 1998 to December 20, 1998. Out of 189 male and 291 female, the high-level group that showed high health concern accounted for 44.4%, the medium-level group for 13.1%, and the low-level group for 42.5%, in the health practice, the high-level group accounted for 3.8%, the medium-level group for 18.8%, and the low-level group for 77.5%. In the self-rated health status, the high-level group accounted for 29.0%, the medium-level group for 31.0%, and the low-level group for 40.0%, and in the ADL, the high ADL group accounted for 91.5%, and the low-level ADL group for 8.5%. The result of the chi-square test showed that for male, there was a significant relation between the health concern and the health practice index score. In the relation between the health practice index score and the self-rated health status, there was significant positive relationship between health practice index and self-rated health status, and in the relation between the health practice Index score and the ADL, old people with higher health practices showed good ADL(but not significant). Old people with good ADL also showed good self-rated health status. In the multiple regression analysis where the health practice was used as a dependent variable, the health concern was added to the sociodemographic variables as an independent variables, a formula was formed for male old people only and ones with high concern in health showed good health practice. In the multiple logistic regression analysis where the sociodemographic variables to which the health practices was added were used as an independent variable and the ADL as a dependent variable, the ADL appeared to be not good if for male old people the living costs were born by their sons and daughters and as for female old people their ages increased, but it was good if old people had sources of health information such as hospitals or health centers. The self-rated health status was worse, for male old people, if they had short living costs or diseases and for female old people, if they had spouses, living costs born by their sons and daughters or diseases, but it was better, for male old people, if they had periodical gatherings or carried out health practices a lot, and for female old people, if they had sources of health information such as hospitals or health centers or carried out health practices a lot. In view of the results stated above, the higher the old people had health concern, the more they carried out health practices, and the more they carried out health practices, the better they had ADL and self-rated health status that served as the level of health. Further, the better ADL, the better self-rated health status.
