  • Terrestrial laser scanner provides highly accurate, 3D images and by sweeping a laser beam over a scene or object, the laser scanner is able to record millions of 3D points' coordinates in a short period, so becoming distinguished in various application fields as one of the representative surveying instruments. This study deals with 3D building boundary extraction using Terrestrial Laser Scanner. The results shows that high accuracy 3D coordinates for building boundaries are possibly acquired fast, but terrestrial laser scanner is a ground-based system, so "no roofs", and "no lower part of building" due to trees and electric-poles, etc. It is expected that the combination of total station, terrestrial laser scanner, airborne laser scanner with aerial photogrammetry will contribute to the acquisition of an effective 3D spatial information.

  • In this study, subject areas with different topographic feature were selected for the purpose of measuring the slope terrain by setting Terrestrial LiDAR in different places. And the slope terrain was analyzed based on three-dimensional raw data obtained through the measurement of slope terrain. With DEM data obtained from five measurement instances with 5mm of scan interval by setting Terrestrial LiDAR on the site 30m away straight from the slope terrain consisting of asphalt, rock, soil, and plants, the slope terrain was analyzed according to topographic feature. In addition, in consideration of changes in setting location that might affect the measured result, this study reviewed the accuracy of measured data obtained from different measurement areas.

  • This study introduces an analysis of the quantitative characteristics of topography and topographical changes based on precise 3D topography through 6 times surveys from December 2008 to January 2010 using Terrestrial LIDAR on the Malipo beach. The Malipo sand beach is mostly located between 0m to 1.5m MSL. The area of the beach above 2.25m, the Mean High Water, is very small. It have characteristics of topographical change of erosion and deposition along the entire coast line which more apparently appear in the northern beach than the southern part of the beach. Erosion prevails from spring to autumn, while during winter both erosion and deposition largely occur. Volumes from first and last survey were almost equal.

  • Assessing landcreep requires long-term monitoring, because cracks and steps develop over long periods. However, long-term monitoring using wire extensometers and inclinometers is inefficient in terms of cost and management. Therefore, this study selected an area with active landcreep and evaluated the feasibility of monitoring it using imagesing from terrestrial LiDAR and drones. The results were compared with minute-by-minute data measured in the field using a wire extensometer. The comparison identified subtle differences in the accuracy of the two sets of results, but monitoring using terrestrial LiDAR and drones did generate values similar to the wire extensometer. This demonstrates the potential of basic monitoring using terrestrial LiDAR and drones, although minute-byminute field measurements are required for analyzing and predicting landcreep. In the future, precise monitoring using images will be feasible after verifying image analysis at various levels and accumulating data considering climate and accuracy.

  • Landslide, one of the serious natural disasters, has Incurred a large loss of human and material resources. Recently, many forecasting or alarm systems based on various kinds of measuring equipment have been developed to reduce the damage of landslide. However, only a few of these equipments are guaranteed to evaluate the safety of whole side of land slope with their accessibility to the slope. In this study, we performed some experiments to evaluate the applicability of a terrestrial LiDAR as a surveying tool to measure the displacement of a land slope surface far a slope collapsing protection system. In the experiments, we had applied a slope stability method to a land slope and then forced to this slope with a load increasing step by step. In each step, we measured the slope surface with both a total station and a terrestrial LiDAR simultaneously. As the result of Slope Fracturing analysis using all targets, the LiDAR system showed that three was 1cm RMSE on X-axis, irregularity errors on Y-axis and few errors on Z-axis compare with Total Station. As the result of Slope Fracturing analysis using continuous targets, the pattern of Slope Fracturing was different according to the location of continuous targets and we could detect a continuous change which couldn't be found using Total station. The accuracy of the LiDAR data was evaluated to be comparable to that of the total station data. We found that a LiDAR system was appropriate to measuring the behaviour of land slope. The LiDAR data can cover the whole surface of the land slope, whereas the total station data are available on a small number of targets. Moreover, we extracted more detail information about the behavior of land slope such as the volume and profile changes using the LiDAR data.

  • This study deals with the measurement of reflectivity as well as the distance accuracy with Terrestrial Laser Scanner(TLS) using time of flight methods and near infrared wave length, for a variety of user-made targets. Especially, point clouds' reflection to several targets was measured with Gretag Macbeth il spectrophotometer in the office. And the distance accuracy in comparison to reference distance for TLS performance evaluation, was tested after scanning the user-made targets and measuring the inter-pillars distances over the precise EDM calibration baseline. The results of test was shown that except white resin objects, with approx. 10m and 170m inter-pillar distances, other targets achieved the distance accuracy of several millimeters(mm) with respect to standard distances. Future work should be concentrate on a few parameters influencing on the distance accuracy such as atmospheric correction, instrument correction, the additive constant or zero/index correction, etc.

  • Joint roughness is one of the most important parameters in analysis of rock slope stability. Especially in probabilistic analysis, the random properties of joint roughness influence the probability of slope failure. Therefore, a large dataset on joint roughness is required for the probabilistic analysis but the traditional direct measurement of roughness in the field has some limitations. Terrestrial LiDAR has advantagess over traditional direct measurement in terms of cost and time. JRC (Joint Roughness Coefficient) was calculated from statistical parameters which are known from quantitative methods of converting the roughness of the material surface into JRC. The mean, standard deviation and distribution function of JRC were obtained, and we found that LiDAR is useful in obtaining large dataset for random variables.
