  • In the investigation of geographic variations on the Zacco koreanus distributed widely in southern Korean Peninsula, it was found that there were distinct differences in the nuptial coloration among geographic populations. These color variations were presence of red band on anterior margin of pectoral fin and color patterns of dorsal fin. On the basis of those color variations three color types were recognized in Z. koreanus, that is, HK, NS and NE types. HK types were distributed mainly in Han and Geum River, NS types in Nakdong and Seomjin River, and NE types in Nakdong River and small streams on the east coast. It was noted ecologically and taxonomically that these three types were well separated geographically and two types of them, i.e., NS and NE types cohabit in the Nakdong River and shown a tendency of microhabitat segregation between them.

  • This study is to consider the geographical images of Nakdong River region represented in the Modern Poetry. The findings are as follows. First, the change aspect of the poetry around Nakdong River area shows the social phenomenon of population movement, economic deprivation symptoms, the Korean War, economic development plans, the industrialization and spatial inequalities, environmental problems and environmental poetry, and various environmental issues, etc. Second, the poetry about Nakdong River can be classified by geographical area, showing a humanistic geographical image of the sense of place, natural geographical images about geomorphology and climate, and regional development and environmental pollution. Finally, the large number of poetry describes the beautiful terrain and the sense of place of poet, among ones targeting the upsteam of Nakdong River. The one in middle and downstream areas, however, reflected the reality and was social criticism mostly. This is because that, compares to the upstream, many large cities are distributed in the downstream area and the river becomes increasingly contaminated as it flows to the downstream.

  • This paper attempts to analyze the geographical characters of Twitter data and presents analysis potentials for social network analysis in geography. First, this paper suggests a methodology for a topic modeling-based approach in order to identify the geographical characteristics of tweets, including an analysis flow of Twitter data sets, tweet data collection and conversion, textural pre-processing and structural analysis, topic discovery, and interpretation of tweets' topics. GPS coordinates referencing tweets(geotweets) were extracted among sampled Twitter data sets because it contains the tweet place where it was created. This paper identifies a correlated relationship between some specific topics and local places in Jeju. This correlation is closely associated with some place names and local sites in Jeju Island. We assume it is the intention of tweeters to record their tweet places and to share and retweet with other tweeters in some cases. A surface density map shows the hotspots of tweets, detecting around some specific places and sites such as Jeju airport, sightseeing sites, and local places in Jeju Island. The hotspots show similar patterns of the floating population of Jeju, especially the thirty-year age group. In addition, a topic modeling algorithm is applied for the geographical topic discovery and comparison of the spatial patterns of tweets. Finally, this empirical analysis presents that Twitter data, as social network data, provide geographical significance, with topic modeling approach being useful in analyzing the textural features reflecting the geographical characteristics in large data sets of tweets.

  • This paper focuses on the geographical characteristics and the spatial distributions and patterns of the road names in the new address system for which all the 183 road names of Cheongju City has been used. All 183 road names in Cheongju City and their textural information are analyzed and classified into four main categories and six divisions as sub-category. Each type is mapped and its spatial patterns are discussed in order to identify the interaction between the road name and the geographical characteristics of each type. From the discussion stated in the paper, it can be inferred that the road name is not only a representative place name in an area, but also presents an important geographical feature reflecting the toponymy of the cultural and historical backgrounds of an area. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize that for road naming, various aspects such as geographical backgrounds and characteristics should be considered. These are directly related to the publicity and utilization of the road names to the public who is still unfamiliar with the new address system to be used. Finally, various geographical topics and approaches such as toponymy and spatial analysis are proposed for further geographical research, which will contribute to the extent of geographical research scopes.

  • To examine the relationship of geological distribution and phylogenetic tree of O. latipes in the Far East, we analyzed cytochrome b (cyt b) gene in the mitochondrial genome. In this study we employed the entire sequence of cyt b of 53 samples collected from nine Korean locations and 117 cyt b data retrieved from the GenBank. From 170 Oryzias latipes cyt b sequence data, 142 different haplotypes were identified and phylogenetic relationship was reconstructed based on the dataset. According to the phylogeny, haplotypes were divided into three major haplogroups A, B and C, and their relationships were well correlated to their distributional patterns. Haplogroup A which is widely distribute in the southern part of Korea is separated in the geographical distribution from the haplogroup B which is found from China to the western part of Korea. Haplogroup C is only found in Japan.

  • Spinous loaches widely distributed in Korea, are of many color pattern types, but interestingly the crossband B and C-types of these coaches are collected only in the two rivers, the Yeongsan River and the Seomjin River, flowing through the south-western part of Korea. These two types have not only different color pattern, but also different geographical distribution: the B-type is found in the Yeongsan River and the C-typs, in the Seomjin River. But the both types have four common distinctive features, which easily distinguish them from other already known species of this genus: the B and C-types have the similar total length distribution, the same structure of lamina circularis and scales, and the black spots at the back of their opercula. These peculiarities may be explained by studing the history of these two rivers. The author considers that they are once rivers of the same origin located around the Noryeong and the Sobaeg Mountains, and then were eventually separated from each other as the water level or the crust of Korea peninsula changed. Thus, these two types, B and C, of spinous loaches should have been the same species living in the same river, but in the course of time, these two types have taken different color patterns since the separation of two rivers thus making them impossible to cross between these two populations.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the location characteristics of convenience stores, a consumption industry that forms a new retail environment and implements unattended, and reveals the geographic factors that affect its location. For this purpose, we first examine the growth and regional distribution of manned convenience stores and then construct a gamma generalized linear regression model that explains the distribution of the unmanned convenience stores as well as the manned and unmanned combined convenience stores. As the result, it was observed that the unmanned convenience stores and the unmanned discount stores are located close to public transportation facilities and they have relatively little movement of the population but they are distributed in areas with a higher density of young residential population and densely distributed retail stores and restaurants. The effects of demographic factors on the location of the unmanned convenience stores and the unmanned discount stores differed according to the scope and characteristics of their sales items. Our findings provide an empirical basis for subsequent academic research as an initial study that identified geographic factors influencing the selection of opening locations for unmanned stores.

  • Frequency of accessory chromosomes in populations of rye in Korea was known to be exceedingly high. Cytological observation was carried out in five population of rye in Korea and the result revealed that the frequency is ranged from 39.1 to 53.1%. Although this figure is smaller than the results in previous work carried out by otehr workers, it is still higher than any other region in the world.
