  • This study look into a role change and geographical inertia of the central place. The place is selected and progressed as the center which is the joining of physical condition and social situation of the region. The central place is the role change according to social change but it has geographical inertia as the central place. The result is as follows. Firstly, the role of regional center is changed. This sample region is the center of a national defense and administration and traffic in Three-Country period. But the role of the national defense is disappeared with the unity of the three countries. A traffic center facility was lost because of traffic axis changed from the east-west line to the north-south line when Ko-Ryo period. A facility loss as a traffic center leads to diminish the administration function and the movement of the regional center within that area. Secondary. the new regional center function was maintained by the joining of an outside and inside peoples. It maintained the geographical inertia by Confucianism culture instead of administration function. Thirdly, it had geographical location movement within the area.

  • The study focused on analyzing spatial sampling by minimizing autocorrelation of spatial based on spatial and geographical data. The study concluded two different ways of minimizing autocorrelation. First, it was important to use suitable spatial sampling method to alienate spatial autocorrelation from spatial or geographical data. The shear distribution rate of public transportation in Seoul resulted in high rate of autocorrelation. However, the study showed samples eliminated autocorrelation when samples were extracted with reasonable distance(above 400m) apart. Without spatial sampling the distortion of spatial data leads to false results; therefore, spatial sampling is indispensable. Second, factors which fluctuates shear distribution of public transportation spatial sampling changed before and after spatial sampling. This was caused by incapable of controling inherent spatial autocorrelation of the data.

  • The Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) image and the Digital Elevation Model(DEM) of an target area are put into use to generate three dimensional image map. An method of image map generation is explained. The orbit and attitude determination of satellite makes it possible to model signal acquisition configuration precisely, which is a key to mapping image coordinates to geographic coordinates of concerned area. An application is made to RADARSAT in the purpose of testing its validity. To determine the orbit, zero Doppler range is used. And to determine the attitude, Doppler centroid frequency, which is the frequency observed when target is put in the center of antenna's view, is used. Conventional geocoding has been performed on the basis of direct method(mapping image coordinates to geographic coordinates), but in this reserch the inverse method(mapping from geographic coordinates to image coordinates) is taken. This paper shows that precise signal acquisition modeling based on the orbit and attitude determination of satellite as a platform leads to a satellite-centered accurate geocoding process. It also shows how to model relative motion between space-borne radar and target. And the relative motion is described in ECIC(earth-centered-initial coordinates) using Doppler equation and signal acquisition geometry.

  • This study aims to analyze the spatial patterns of intellectual property across various regions through an in-depth analysis of intellectual property trends and their influential factors. While there's an overall upsurge in intellectual property applications in the Seoul metropolitan areas, a more detailed inspection reveals divergent patterns based on the type of intellectual property - with patent rights primarily increasing in certain non-Seoul areas and trademark rights seeing a rise predominantly within Seoul. Our findings also suggest that the growth in intellectual property applications correlates positively with improvements in public transportation accessibility, expansion of knowledge-based service industries, and a rise in large enterprises, although the relationships vary by intellectual property type. These results indicate the significant influence of geographical factors and industrial structures on knowledge-generation activities, thereby suggesting a need for region-specific policies to bolster these capacities.

  • Recently, women's fear of crime continues to increase in space of everyday. By the way, the fear of crime has the spatial properties as crime. Therefore, The purpose of this study is to evaluate the spatial dependence of fear of crime and to suggest the physical environmental factors influencing fear of crime. For this, a spatial regression analysis using spatial weights was conducted based on the location data of the fear of crime measured through a survey. The results of this study are as follows; First, the fear of crime felt by women in their twenties who are vulnerable to crime has spatial dependence. Therefore, it is necessary to consider the spatial characteristics in analyzing the environmental factors affecting this. Second, in order to reduce the fear of crime, it is necessary to improve the environments of old housing and entertainment facilities. There is also a need for ongoing management. Third, careful consideration is needed in the installation of CCTV and street lights, which are factors influencing the fear of crime. It is necessary to establish a reasonable arrangement standard for CCTV and to analyze the street lighting in detail.

  • When analyzing geographical phenomena, two properties need to be considered. One is the spatial dependence structure and the other is a variation or an uncertainty inhibited in a geographic space. Two problems are encountered due to the properties. Firstly, spatial dependence structure, which is conceptualized as spatial autocorrelation, generates heterogeneous geographic landscape in a spatial process. Secondly, generic statistics, although suitable for dealing with stochastic uncertainty, tacitly ignores location information im plicit in spatial data. GIS is a versatile tool for manipulating locational information, while spatial statistics are suitable for investigating spatial uncertainty. Therefore, integrating spatial statistics to GIS is considered as a plausible strategy for appropriately understanding geographic phenomena of interest. Geographic hot-spot analysis is a key tool for identifying abnormal locations in many domains (e.g., criminology, epidemiology, etc.) and is one of the most prominent applications by utilizing the integration strategy. The article aims at reviewing spatial statistical perspective for analyzing spatial processes in the framework of GIS by carrying out empirical analysis. Illustrated is the analysis procedure of using spatial scan statistic for detecting clusters in the framework of GIS. The empirical analysis targets for identifying spatial clusters of breast cancer incidents in Erie and Niagara counties, New York.

  • This study analyzed the repeated causes of policy failure focusing on Yangyang International Airport cases. Yangyang International Airport, which opened in 2002, was built with about 360 billion won, but it is considered as a representative example of policy failure of local airports. According to the policy failure theory, the failure factors of Yangyang International Airport are anlyzed by rationalistic, political, and environmental complexity viewpoint. The results are as follows. First, from a rationalist point of view, Yangyang Airport failed to achieve the policy goal of securing passengers and revitalizing local economy, This is due to the pressure of politics and the lack of geographical infrastructure. Second, the failure of the stakeholders to resolve conflicts in the flow of politics can be seen as the conflict between the airline and the airport, and the failure to reconcile conflicts between the government and the airports on the low cost airline permits and subsidies. Third, from the viewpoint of environmental complexity, Yangyang International Airport can be regarded as a failure to adapt to environmental changes such as the opening of nearby expressways and railway lines, and the sharp decline of Chinese tourists. This study sugeests the establishment of an independent organization that can prevent unreasonable business promotion by politics in the case of large scale national projects, the linkage with the surrounding infrastructure and related businesses in the case of transportation facilities such as airports and railways, and institutionalization of cooperative governance for coordinating conflict among stakeholders.

  • The basic approach of this study was to take the theory of cultural fluctuations to investigate the early modern and modern patterns of the use of ox carts and@ the social and economic appropriateness and cultural significance of ox carts. The study chose a village that was the only place that used ox carts in Bugye-myeon. The findings will help to understand how traditional cultural elements would continue or change according to the natural, geographical, economical, and cultural characteristics of a village. Located in Gaho-2-ri, Bugye-myeon, Gunwi-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, Dongrim Village started to use ox carts during the Japanese rule and replaced the traditional version with an improved one in 1972 when a reservoir was built. Until the 1970s, they used ox carts to carry agricultural products and luggage and to visit the markets in distant Bugye-myeon or Gunwi-eup. In the early 1980s when a cultivator was first introduced into the village, ox carts gradually disappeared in the village and eventually remained as a mere means of transportation. As the younger generations were active in introducing modern means of transportation, a cultivator became the main means of transportation in the village in the 1980s and a truck since the latter half of the 1990s. Despite those changes, however, the elderly in their seventies or older continued to use ox carts. With aged labor and inability to use modern means of transportation, they grew cows and oxen to cultivate the inclined fields and gain easy access to fields distributed in distant locations and continued to ox carts through reform. In Dongrim Village, the heritage of using reformed ox carts is the practice of appropriate technology by the old farmers and a cultural representation of an aged agricultural society. That is, the elderly recognized the appropriateness and practicality of traditional culture and renewed a traditional means of transportation called an ox cart. The phenomenon of the old men and women frequently using ox carts in an agricultural village in the mountain with geographical limitations has settled down as a cultural representation of the elderly in Dongrim Village. The continuing usage of ox carts in Dongrim Village is attributed to the fact that ox carts well suit the natural, geographical, and economic aspects of the village and the cultural inertia of the elderly with the aging of the farmers. Thus it is once again shown that human beings transmit and alter culture according to their overall situations and conditions.

  • Lots of geographic phenomena have dynamic spatial patterns with time changes, and there have been lots of researches on exploring these dynamic spatial patterns. However, most of these researches focused on the static pattern analysis in a given period, rather than dealing with dynamic changes in the spatial pattern over time with the continual or cumulative perspective. For this reason, investigation of the inertia of spatial process in terms of temporal changes is needed. From this background, the purpose of this paper is to propose the methodology to explore the changes in spatial pattern cumulatively by considering the inertia of the spatial statistics over time, and to apply it to the case study That is, we introduce the new spatial statistic, and produce the z-values of the statistic using Monte Carlo Simulation, and then to explore the changes in spatial patterns over time cumulatively. To do this, the method to combine the J statistic with CUSUM statistic for exploring spatial patterns, and to apply it to the changes in the commercial landuse in Erie County, New York State. Through the proposed method for spatio-temporal Patterns, we could explore continual changes effectively in the spatial patterns reflecting the statistics by temporal spot cumulatively.
