The purpose of this study is to research the effect of using analogies in high school earth science classes. According to the usage of TWA model, three types of teaching strategies were developed: text developer-generated, teacher-generated, and student-generated analogies. The model described in this paper began with a task analysis of highschool science textbooks for grade 10 to identify how the textbook authors used analogies to explain plate tectonics concepts. In this study, 210 students were sampled from first graders of high school. After 7 classes, the consciousness of students was investigated with questionnaires. The results are as follows: 1. Many plate-tectonics analogies are used in high school science textbooks (total 25). Teachers and authors construct effective analogies to help students build on their relevant knowledge by applying it to new knowledge acquired from textbooks. 2. Analysis of the data indicate that instruction using student-generated analogies was more effective than others. But in the class in conveying complicated concepts (ex. transform fault), teacher-generated instruction was effective. Teachers need to be aware of the weakness of using analogies in order to select the most appropriate analogies. 3. Making analogies in general, as well as using analogies have systematic steps. Analogies should be used after considering student's preconception, teacher's consciousness and text author's intention to use analogies as powerful instructional tools.

A new apparatus was presented in order to help understand the concept of the Coriolis force which is essential in understanding the trajectories of the atmospheric current and the tide of seawater. In the apparatus proposed in high-school textbooks, since the slide from which the ball is released is set outside the rotating disk, it was not possible to interpret, with the trajectory of the ball on the disk, the motion of the atmosphere and the current of seawater occurring as a result of the Coriolis force. In order to resolve such problem, a new apparatus was developed in which the slide was set on the disk and rotated with the disk. Experiments were carried out using both the existing apparatus and the new apparatus, and the results were compared. While, in the experiment performed with the existing apparatus, it was difficult to analyze the trajectory of ball because the motion of the ball was not smooth when it hit the disk, in the experiment with the new apparatus it was much easier to analyze the trajectories. It was also possible to compare the trajectories when the initial velocity of the ball was varied.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the science writing tasks in elementary science textbooks and workbooks using the presented form and the writing components analysis framework. For this study, the science writing tasks in the 2007, 2009 and 2015 revised elementary science textbooks and workbooks were analyzed. The results of this study are as follows. As a result of analyzing the presented form of science writing tasks, the number of books for science writing tasks was reduced and the tasks were changed to unclear form as the curriculum was revised from the 2007 to 2015. And the science writing tasks in the 2009 revised 5th~6th grades group were presented as writing and drawing, and they appeared as the most desirable form. As a result of analyzing science writing tasks using the writing components analysis framework, there was a difference according to the curricula and the grades groups, but they tended to be focused on some sub-factors. However, the science writing tasks reflecting the most diverse sub-factors were presented in the 2007 revised 5th~6th grades group.

The purpose of this study is to explore needs and the direction for the development of localization data in the geological field of elementary school. Many studies show that geology-related learning is highly effective in the form of direct learning, and It is reported that this learning has a positive effect on students' scientific attitudes. As such, the first-hand experience of the geological learning is outdoor geology learning and is the basis and core of the development of localization materials. However, the analysis of this study shows that the development of outdoor geology learning site is mainly conducted in some regions. In addition, considering that geological sites are distributed evenly throughout Korea, it is necessary to actively develop geological-related localization materials to learn elementary school geology-related units. In addition, some areas where outdoor geological study grounds were developed are composed only of learning places and no specific learning materials have been developed. In this regard, not only geological researchers but also field teachers working in the area need much effort. Development of localization material in the geological field needs to be developed at the level of material presented in the geology unit of the textbook. And in the actual class, it is desirable to use the textbook data and the developed localization data at the same time. In addition, the development of the outdoor geology field should be developed in consideration of the pre-experience-post activities so that learners can have various geological experiences.

In this study, the scientific description of Earth was analyzed by targeting the item titled '1. Introduction to the Earth World', which is part of the 'first section' of SeoYuGyeonMun(西遊見聞) written by Yu Giljun(俞吉濬). This part served as an introduction to the entirety of SeoYuGyeonMun. It was also one of the earliest documents in Korean literature to mention 'the earth as a celestial body', rather than solely focusing on it as land which was a departure from traditional thinking. Yu Giljun made deliberate efforts to translate the concept of Earth's rotation into "Jashinjeon(自身轉)" and Neptune as "Haeryongseong(海龍星)". He included the latest scientific debates and facts in SeoYuGyeonMun, such as the theories of Western scholars explaining the types of seismic waves and discussions at international conferences related to the establishment of the original meridian. Yu Giljun, who was not a science major, would have used HunMongGungRiDoHae(訓蒙窮理図解, 1868) written by Fukuzawa(福澤諭吉) and GeokmulJiji(格物地誌, 1876) which was translated by Matsumoto(松本駒次郎) as references to describe scientific descriptions. The contents described in 'Introduction to the Earth World' cover the foundational composition and subject matter that are typically found in modern-day Earth science textbooks.

The purpose of this study is to analyze scientific attitude and its components in the general remarks and in the particulars of one government-designated and seven authorized elementary school science teacher's guides for the 3rd~4th grades which were developed according to the 2015 national science curriculum, and to derive implications for future development of teacher's guide. The results of the study are as follows: First, in their general remarks, five of eight teacher's guides (62.5%) give a very brief explanation on the components of scientific attitude, and the remaining three teacher's guides give a relatively detailed explanation on the components but they lack practical information on teaching and assessing of the components; Second, in the case of unit objective in the four units of the area of 'Earth and Universe', five of eight teacher's guides (62.5%) contain 3~4 components among 'curiosity', 'cooperation', 'objectivity', 'critical mindedness', or 'respect for evidence', and one of the remaining three teacher's guides contains only the component of 'curiosity', another guide doesn't have any component, and the other guide doesn't have unit objective itself; Third, in the case of unit assessment, only one of eight teacher's guide (12.5%) has independent unit assessment, includes several components of scientific attitude in the unit assessment, and is broadly consistent between the components of scientific attitude in unit objective and in unit assessment; Fourth, in case of lesson objective, three teacher's guide (37.5%) contain 3~4 components among 'curiosity', 'cooperation', 'objectivity' and 'critical mindedness', and the remaining five teacher's guide (62.5%) include only 'curiosity'; Fifth, in the case of lesson assessment, among eight teacher's guides, five (62.5%) evaluate 3~4 components of scientific attitudes, two (25.0%) evaluate only 'curiosity' and 'cooperation', and one (12.5%) does not evaluate anything.
The purpose of this study is to provide informations for developing next elementary school science textbooks and educational implications for a spot of science class through analyzing patterns of questions in the elementary school science textbooks under the 2007 revised curriculum. To get a meaningful results, the 2,446 questions extracted by operation definition from 3~6 grade science text books were analyzed by modified analysis frame work based on Blosser's classified system. The findings of this study were as follows: First, among 2,446 questions, the propositional pattern element had the highest rate, 49.2%, the appreciable pattern element had the lowest rate, 1.4%, of all pattern elements. Second, from the results of comparing patterns of questions in each grade's science textbook, as the grade went higher, the rate of the applicable and the divergent pattern element tended to increase, and that of the other elements tended to decrease. Third, as the results of comparing patterns of questions of 4 each field in elementary science textbooks, the energy field questions were the largest in number, followed by the substance field. The rate of the propositional pattern element was the highest of all question elements in common in each field. In the reproductive and the propositional pattern element, the energy and the substance field had a little higher rate than the other fields. On the other hand, in the applicable and the divergent pattern element, the earth and the life field had a little higher rate than the other fields.

This study analyzed a group interview with six earth science teachers and eight middle school students to find out the evaluations and criteria they use to evaluate VR/AR contents (two virtual reality content and two augmented reality contents) in middle school science digital textbook. The study found the VR/AR contents were evaluated on four criteria as follows: VR/AR media characteristics; technical operation; user interface; and teaching-learning design. The evaluations can be summarized by each criterion. First, regarding VR/AR media characteristics, interesting features of VR/AR contents were considered relatively advantageous compared to other media like videos. However, its shortage of visual presence and inconvenience of using markers were mentioned as shortcomings. Second, in the technical operation criteria, teachers and students found the following conditions as technically challenging: failing to properly operate on a particular OS; huge volumes of contents in the application; and frequent freezing when using the application. Third, poor intuitiveness and lack of flexibility were found as negative aspects in user interface. Fourth, regarding teaching-learning design, the teachers evaluated whether the VR/AR contents delivered scientifically accurate information; whether they incorporated class goals set by teachers; and whether they can help students' inquiry. It turned out teachers gave negative feedbacks on VR/AR contents. The students evaluated VR/AR contents by assessing whether they help them with learning science but concluded they did not regard them necessary in science learning at school. Based on the findings, this study discusses which development direction VR/AR contents should take to be useful in teaching and learning science.
