  • In this study, we investigated the effects of explicit and reflective instruction about nature of science (NOS) using episodes from the history of science upon students' understanding about NOS, achievement, and enjoyment of science lessons. Four classes of ninth graders (N=129) at a coed middle school were divided into the control and the treatment groups. The students were taught about the composition of material for 11 classes. Before the instruction, most of the students in both the control and the treatment groups held naive views about NOS. After the instructions, the views about NOS of the control group students did not change, whereas the students in the treatment group held more adequate views about NOS. The high-level students in the treatment group showed more adequate views about NOS than the low-level students. However, there were no significant differences between the test scores of the two groups in the achievement and the enjoyment of science lessons.

  • This study investigated the influence of life satisfaction, accomplishment value, peer attachment, and relationship with teachers on the self-esteem of adolescents in three time points. The study population consisted of a nationally representative sample of middle school 1st grade students who completed the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey(KCYPS) of the National Youth Policy Institute in 2010, 2012, and 2014. Descriptive statistics used included frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation; in addition, reliability, repeated measure ANOVA, and regression results were reported using SPSS statistics. The results were as follows. First, this study showed that the longitudinal changes of self-esteem, life satisfaction, accomplishment value, peer attachment, and relationship with teachers were significantly different across three time points. Second, longitudinal changes in adolescents' self-esteem, life satisfaction, peer attachment, and relationship with teachers differed by gender, but accomplishment value did not. Third, life satisfaction was the most influential to self-esteem and peer attachment was the second most influential in the three data sets after controlling for gender, parents' academic attainment, and residential area. The influence of life satisfaction on self-esteem decreased across the three time points, but that of peer attachment increased over time. Instruction on life satisfaction and peer attachment needs to be more highlighted in Home Economics classes to enhance the self-esteem of adolescents.

The classes were conducted from July 5 to July 15, 2021, for the second graders of S middle school in Gwangju Metropolitan City, in a total of 6 sessions, i.e., 3 sessions per week for 2 weeks. The influence of classes on parent-child relationship was measured in terms of the understanding of the middle age, degrees of interaction, affection, and bond with parents. In order to analyze the impact of classes, pre- and post-class online surveys were conducted on 184 students who agreed to participate. For the collected quantitative data, descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and pairwise t-tests were performed using the SPSS Ver 22.0 statistical program. According to the results, students' understanding of the developmental characteristics of middle age increased and the interaction between the students and their parents increased after the class. And the overall affection with the mother increased significantly. Also, students' bonds with both mother and father were significantly improved. Based on these results, the necessity and direction of home economics class were discussed to form a positive relationship between adolescent children and their parents.

Five teaching-learning lesson plans for the cultivation of gratitude disposition were developed, and completed after three experts in home economics verified their validity and revised them. From June 1, 2010 to June 30, 2010, five classes were to 210 grade students at a Gyeongbuk Junior School, and dispositions were investigated before and after the classes. Gratitude disposition standards used GQ-6, like McCullough, and for before-and-after-inspection comparison, t-test and analysis of open-ended questionnaires were carried out. The results proved the instruction effective. Before the class for the cultivation of gratitude disposition, students had a gratitude disposition average of 2.87(out of 5). After the class, the average was 3.35, which shows that students had improved considerably. Also, in analysis of a open-ended questionnaire, it was said that the class had been provided the opportunity to think about the value of nature and neighbors and that the class content reminded them about appreciation. In conclusion, for the character education in other areas of middle school home economics, teaching-learning lesson plans development must be attained to further this character education program.

  • SSI instruction can be an effective tool to promote key competencies for future citizens. Our assumption of the study is that applying the concept of collective intelligence in the context of SSI learning would facilitate the learning. Thus, we designed and implemented Collective Intelligence-based SSI instruction over almost a year and observed the effects of the instruction on enhancing students' collaboration, information management, critical thinking, and communication skills. Twenty 9th grade students enrolled in a science-gifted program voluntarily participated. Data was collected by administering a questionnaire to examine the skills before, in the middle of, and after the instruction, and by conducting classroom observations and focus student group interviews. The results indicated some degree of improvement in their targeted skills. First, they experienced the expansion of their thoughts by actively sharing information and ideas using the web platform. Second, they became more flexible and open to different points of views in order to accomplish a common goal. Third, they appreciated having independent time and space to explore their own positions on the issues and to search necessary information, and believed that the process encouraged them to more pro-actively participate and communicate in the group debates. Lastly, they positively perceived the values that collaboration with diverse group members could produce.
