  • Anti-corrosion behaviour of rebar embedded in cement mortar containing chloride ions was investigated by electrochemical chloride extraction(ECE). $43\%$ of the initial chloride ions of the cement mortar was fixed to Friedel salts and the soluble chloride ions were successfully extracted by ECE method. Concentration profiles of the chloride ions were estimated by Fick's 2nd law with time and depth, and it was close to the real value. The corrosion potential increased to anodic direction after ECE test, and the corrosion of rebar was reduced as a result of AC impedance spectroscopy.

  • Demand for water is increasing due to rapid population growth and increased industrial activities. Membrane technologies have attracted most attention as a promising advanced technology for the supply of sustainable water resources. Chemical and structural properties of polyamide membranes, one of the most widely used membranes in water treatment plant, has been reported to be affected by residual chlorine dissolved in water after chlorine disinfection. This paper focuses on the chlorine speciation at various solution pHs and change of surface properties/performance of polyamide membranes due to the chlorine exposure.

  • O157:H7, Salmonella typhimurium, Listeria monocytogenes were treated with aqueous chlorine dioxide to elucidate effect of aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment on major food-borne pathogenic bacteria. Survival plot of E.coli O157:H7 at 5 ppm chlorine dioxide showed typical first-order rate. After 5 min of treatment, cell number decreased by 1.5 log cycle. Survival plot slope gave D value of 3.37 min. S. typhimurium and L. monocytogenes showed biphasic curve. Aqueous chlorine dioxide treatment on S. typhimurium and L. monocytogenes resulted in bactericidal effect for 5 min, and thereafter no effect was observed under experimental conditions of this study. These results suggest concentration of chlorine dioxide is more important than treatment time, and 5 ppm chlorine dioxide treatment is not sufficient for sanitizing fresh vegetables.

  • The chlorination of the titanium slag from titaniferrous magnetite by the arc-smelting in a fluidized bed reactor was investigated to produce $TiCl_4$ from domestic titaniferrous magnetite. The optimum conditions are as follows : reaction temperature; $950^{\circ}C$, reaction time; 90min, $Cl_2$ gas velocity; 3cm/sec, and petroleum coke-to-titanium slag weight ratio; 0.18. Also the mean diameter of titanium slag and petroleum coke was $44.6{\mu}m$ and $67.9{\mu}m$ respectively. Under these conditions 97.07% of Ti component in the titanium slag was chlorinated and the purity of $TiCl_4$ from this chlorination was 96.2%.

  • The storage quality of fresh buckwheat sprouts, as influenced by pretreatment and packaging within processing steps, was investigated to establish appropriate postharvest handling treatment for the commodity. After harvest, the sprouts were dipped in chlorine water (100 ppm), rinsed twice with clean water, pre-cooled with iced water, de-watered, and packed in plastic trays. Sprout samples taken from each processing step were stored at $5^{\circ}C$ for 6 days to measure quality attributes. Viable cell counts of mesophilic aerobes and coliform bacteria were lower by about 1 log scale in the postharvest treated samples compared to an untreated control, although the initial microbial reduction due to the postharvest treatments was offset by cell growth during storage. All sprout samples showed a decrease of fresh weight by approximately 4% after 6 days of storage. However, moisture and soluble solid contents were maintained at the initial levels of the sprouts. No significant difference in surface color was observed among sample treatments. For sensory properties including discoloration, wilting, decay, and visual quality, there were no significant differences among sample treatments. The present results suggest that proper postharvest processing treatments can exert positive effects on extending the shelf-life of fresh buckwheat sprout.

  • This study was investigated the effects of various commercial sanitizers on microbial characteristics in fresh-cut iceberg lettuce during storage. For screening sanitizer, lettuce was cut and dipped in chlorine water ($0.2ml{\cdot}L^{-1}$), solution of organic acids such as ascorbic acid, citric acid, acetic acid, mixture of ascorbic acid and acetic acid (1-6%), and solutions of commercial sanitizers such as Formula 4$^{TM}$ (1,3,4%), Fresh produce wash$^{TM}$ (1,3,4%), Cleancol$^{TM}$ (1%), Chitochol$^{TM}$ (1%) and Natural Ca$^{TM}$ (0.1%) for 3 min, respectively. Washing lettuce with selected sanitizers resulted in reduction of aerobic bacteria of more than 2 log CFU/g. Initial pH of lettuce was related with the pH of sanitizers. pH ranged from 4.7 to 6.1 in Formula 4 (4%, pH 1.7) and Natural Ca (0.1%, pH 12.0), respectively. Chlorine water showed consistent and significant inhibition effect in all of microorganisms except total coliform. Over 3% of Formula 4 and Fresh produce wash were found to have high bactericidal activity among sanitizers. The sanitizers of chlorine water, Fresh produce wash, Chitochol and Natural Ca were effective in reducing yeast and mould populations. As coliform and E. coli, Formula 4 (4%) showed the highest bactericidal activity. The bactericidal effect of commercial sanitizers during storage varied with the kinds and concentrations of tested sanitizers. Although inhibition effect was not showed during storage, these results suggest that commercial sanitizers could be an alternative to chlorine for washing fresh-cut produce.

  • Disinfection by-products(DBPs), such as volatile trihalomethanes and the nonvolatile organochlorine acids, created by chlorination have been extensively studied. However MX which contributes 20-50% of the mutagenic activity in drinking water began to people's attention since 1990. Its chemical name is 3-chloro-4-dichloromethyl-5-hydroxy-2(5H)-furanone. According to WHO guidelines its concentration should be controlled, but its value has not been set up. Due to analytical difficulties in measuring this compound at such a low concentrations and lack of information on toxicity to human. Because concentration (ng/L) of MX in drinking water is low traditional testing methods are ineffective. Therefore this study compared LLE and SPE and have chosen SPE to improve preconcentration. MX has been identified in chlorinated drinking water samples in several countries but not in korea Therefore this study analyzed concentration of MX in different water sources and in spring water. This study examined the causes of changing MX content. Chlorine dosage, seasons, water temperature and distance from the source was all discoverd to be relavant. MX was analyzed in various treatment to find optimum disinfection methods. The outcome was that the concentration of MX was minimized when using biological activated carbon-O3 and granular activated carbon.
