  • We fabricated the nano $TiN_x$ by making of reaction between titanium powder and $Si_3N_4$ during planetary milling. The $TiN_x$ powder was sintered by spark plasma sintering machine after mixing with 50 wt% of titanium powder, and the sintered body was heat-treated at $850^{\circ}C$ in order to investigate its hardness property at the elevated temperature. We analyzed crystal structure by XRD. We observed the peaks of $TiN_{0.26}$ and TiN after 10 hours milling, and we observed TiN peak mainly after 20 hours milling. The reacted particle size distribution was investigated by FE-SEM. Increase of milling time, the size of reacted particles was decreased and the $10{\sim}20nm$ size of $TiN_x$ on the surface of titanium and $TiN_x$ was observed after 20 hours milling. The micro-Vickers hardness of mixed sintered body was about $1050kgf/mm^2$.

  • The automotive seat is an important component that moves in sync with the driver and is actively being developed with various new functions. The aim of this work is to develop a lightweight seat cushion extension module using a lightweight material. To this end, a structural strength analysis, vertical strength test, and durability test were conducted. In the structural analysis, the maximum value of deformation under vertical load was 4.98 mm at the front of the upper panel. The maximum stress was approximately 105 MPa, which occurred at the point of contact between the upper and lower panels of the module. The vertical strength test showed a maximum vertical deformation of 5.31 mm under a vertical load, which differed from the analysis results by approximately 6.45%. The structural safety of the product was verified by the fact that it showed no harmful deformation or damage during operation after the vertical strength test and a durability test for 20,000 cycles. Furthermore, the use of engineering plastics made it possible to reduce the weight by approximately 30% compared to existing products. The lack of damage after tests verified the passenger safety, strength, and rigidity of the product. The results are expected to be applied for improving environmental and fuel efficiency regulations and preventing accidents due to driver fatigue. The applications of this module could be expanded various types of vehicles, as well as other industries in which eco-friendly and lightweight materials are used.

  • The thermal performance of a heating board with microencapsualted PCM was investigated and compared to conventional heating board. The employed PCM was the myristic acid $$ and was encapsulated by the multiple layers of PMMA and paraffin wax. The size of encapsulated PCM was $1{\sim}1.5mm$. Accoring to ANSI/ASHRAE test procedure, the close-loop test configuration was installed. Air was used as the heat transfer fluid and a calibrated orifice was employed for the measurement of air flow rates. The thermal performance test of two different heating boards(with 10 wt% PCM and without PCM) was conducted for different air flow rates and the heat transfer characteristics during cooling was compared. The test results showed that the surface temperature of heating board with 10 wt% PCM maintained higher during the cooling process than that of the heating board without PCM and experimentally determined heat transfer coefficient in heating board with PCM showed higher value compared to heating board without PCM.

  • In order to investigate devolatilization characteristics for ashless coal with relatively low ash content and high heating value, an experiment was performed in different bed configurations of TGA and DTF(Drop Tube Furnace) at atmospheric pressure condition. The heating rate was $10^{\circ}C$/min up to $950^{\circ}C$ in TGA, while the temperatures of DTF varied from 500 to $1300^{\circ}C$ in step of $200^{\circ}C$. A weight loss and particle temperature were obtained to determine devolatilization kinetics. The kinetic parameters including an activation energy and pre-exponential factor for ashless coal were obtained using Coats-Redfern method in TGA and single step method in DTF. Furthermore, the devolatilization kinetics of the ashless coal were compared with the results of different kinds of conventional coal such as sub-bituminous and bituminous. The results show that the activation energy of devolatilazation for ashless coal is lower than those of others in fixed and entrained conditions.

  • In this study, we developed a PC - based motorcycle simulator based on the development technology of a virtual patrol motorcycle training system. This simulator has been developed to be applied to a variety of fields such as driving training for beginners, driver factor research, and system development such as ABS, which can be seen in advanced models. The weight of the motorcycle operated by the patrol guards is more than 400Kg. There is a lot of risk due to the nature of work without prior practice. Therefore, we implemented a study on the untilization of physical stress and temporal pressure in emergency situations. In order to get a feeling that the motorcycle simulator is operating in real-life, it is important that the mutual reliable signal transmission and operation feel between the driver and the simulator. In order to achieve this, we developed a system that can apply the sub-systems of the actual vehicle to the motorcycle simulator in order to generate the same operation feeling as the actual vehicle. Based on these results, we have developed a method of generating a feedback queue.

  • The A60 class deck penetration piece is a fire-resistant system installed on a horizontal compartment to prevent flame spreading and protect lives in fire accidents in ships and offshore plants. This study deals with approximate optimization using discrete variables for the fire resistance design of an A60 class deck penetration piece using different surrogate models and a genetic algorithm. Transient heat transfer analysis was performed to evaluate the fire resistance design of the A60 class deck penetration piece. For the approximate optimization of the piece, the length, diameter, material type, and insulation density were applied to discrete design variables, and temperature, productivity, and cost constraints were considered. The approximate optimum design problem based on the surrogate models was formulated such that the discrete design variables were determined by minimizing the weight of the piece subjected to the constraints. The surrogate models used in the approximate optimization were the response surface model, Kriging model, and radial basis function-based neural network. The approximate optimization results were compared with the actual analysis results in terms of approximate accuracy. The radial basis function-based neural network showed the most accurate optimum design results for the fire resistance design of the A60 class deck penetration piece.

  • Many companies have tried to develop wind power generators with a larger capacity, smaller size and lighter weight. High temperature superconducting (HTS) generators are more suitable for wind power systems because they can reduce volume and weight compared with conventional generators. However, the HTS generator has problems such as huge vacuum vessel and the difficulty of repairing the HTS field coils. These problems can be overcome through the modularization of the HTS field coil. The HTS module coil require a current leads (CLs) for deliver DC current, which causes a large heat transfer load. Therefore, CLs should be designed optimally for reducing the conduction and Joule heat loads. This paper deals with a structural design and thermal analysis of a module coil for a 750 kW-class HTS generator. The conduction and radiation heat loads of the module coils were analysed using a 3D finite element method program. As a result, the total thermal load was less than the cooling capacity of the cryo-cooler. The design results can be effectively utilized to develop a superconducting generator for wind power generation systems.

  • Active vibration control system(AVCS) for helicopter enables to control the vibration generated from the main rotor and has the superb vibration reduction performance with low weight compared passive vibration reduction device. In this paper, FxLMS algorithm-based vibration control software of the light civil helicopter tansmits the control command calculated using the signals of the tachometer and accelerometers to the circular force generator(CFG) is developed and verified. According to the RTCA DO-178C/DO-331, the vibration control software is developed through the model based design technique, and real-time operation performance is evaluated in PILS(processor in-the loop simulation) and HILS(hardware in-the loop simulation) environments. In particular, the reliability of the software is improved through the LDRA-based verification coverage in the PIL environments. In order to AVCS to light civil helicopter(LCH), the dynamic response characteristic model is obtained through the ground/flight tests. AVCS configuration which exhibits the optimal performance is determined using system optimization analysis and flight test and obtain STC certification.

  • Disinfection and maintenance of rearing water in aquaculture is an essential element for the prevention of fish diseases. This is especially important in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) in which fish are reared at high density using recycled water. In this study, tilapia was reared in two different RAS (one with plasma generator - PW system, another without plasma generator - No PW system). In plasma treated group, UVT% of water was improved clearly, and the number of heterotrophic bacteria decreased significantly after 40 days. Total weight gain of tilapia in PW system was significantly higher, and other growth indicators were also relatively higher although not statistically significant. In addition, the fish in PW system had a 100% survival rate, and there were no histological differences between fish from both systems. Fish did not seem to be affected by the toxicity of ROS. In conclusion, it is expected that plasma water can effectively deactivate fish pathogens and improve the quality of rearing water.

  • In this study, to describe vehicle-structure dynamic interaction phenomena with 1/4 vehicle model, nonlinear Hertzian contact spring and nonlinear contact damper are adopted. The external loads acting on 1/4 vehicle model are selfweight of vehicle and geometry information of running surface. The constraint equation on contact surface is implemented by the Penalty method with stabilization and the reaction from constraint violation. To describe pitching motion of various vehicles two types of the displacement constraint equations are exerted to connect between car bodies and between bogie frames, i.e., the rigid body connection and the rigid body connection with pin, respectively. For the time integration of dynamic equations of vehicles and structure Newmark time integration scheme is adopted. To reduce the error caused by inadequate time step size, adaptive time-stepping technique is also adopted. Thus, it is expected that more versatile dynamic interaction phenomena can be described by this approach and it can be applied to various railway dynamic problems with low computational cost.
