Analysis of various proofs of Pythagorean theorem (피타고라스 정리의 다양한 증명 방법과 수학교육학적 아이디어 분석)

  • Pythagorean theorem is one of mathematical contents which is widely used during human culture have developed. There are many historial records related to Pythagorean theorem made by Babylonian, Egyptian, and Mesopotamian. The theorem has the important meaning for mathematics education in secondary school education. Along with the importance of the proof itself, diverse proof methods and ideas included in their methods are also important since the methods improve students' ability to think mathematics. Hence, in this paper, we classify and analyze 390 proof methods published in the book "All that Pythagorean theorem" and other materials. Based on the results we derive educational meaning in mathematics with respect to main idea of the proof, the preliminaries of the study, and study skills used for proof.

수 개념의 새로운 시각

  • 인간의 내면에서 일어나는 여러 가지 변화들을 인간의 지식으로써 표현하는 것이 여러 언어적인 표현이다. 그러나 인간이 무엇을 알고 있는가에 대하여, 표현하기란 그 누구도 결코 불가능한 것일 수도 있고 그렇지 않을 수도 있다. 그리고 인간의 지식을 표현하는 언어로서 자문자답한다고 하더라도 그 결과는 역시 알 수 없는 미궁으로 빠지게 됨을 그 누구나 공감하게 된다. 그렇다고 한다면 수를 보는 시각과 인류 문명에 대한 시각, 그리고 인간사고에 대해서도 이제 새롭게 볼 수 있는 시각이 요구되고 있다. 새로운 시각으로 수의 성질을 크게 존재 ${\cdot}$ 법칙 ${\cdot}$ 구조와 질서 ${\cdot}$${\cdot}$ 양과 질 ${\cdot}$ 통일로 분류하여 알아보았다. 다른 한편으로는 개인의 수 개념 형성에 초점을 둔 Piaget이론을 소개하고 있다 그리고 경험주의 선구자인 Dewey의 수 개념을 소개하고 있다. 역사와 수, 인체와 수에서는 동이와 수리사상이 인체와 관련된다는 사실은 동 ${\cdot}$ 서양을 막론하고 확인되고 있다. 인체와 수에 대한 것을 동양인 중국 문화권에서 일(一)부터 십(十)까지의 기호를 인체와 연결시켜 소개하였다. 수의 본질을 알고 이해하는 것이 곧 자연현상의 이해이며 그 자연의 일부인 인간을 이해하고 동시에 역사를 이해하는 기본이라 아니할 수 없을 것이다. 따라서 수를 보는 시각이 달라지지 않으면 수학을 기피하는 현상은 계속될 것이다.

A study on mathematics books of Joseon Dynasty (조선시대 산서(算書) 연구 - 규장각 소장 산서 연구의 분석을 중심으로 -)

  • HPM(History and Pedagogy of Mathematics) become an important issue to us now. Study on old Korean mathematics books were made recently. We study mathematics books in Kyujanggak in this article. Horng Wann-Sheng 洪萬生, an math. historian and a member of editorial board of Historia Mathematica, visited Kyujanggak, the royal library of Joseon Dynasty. After his visit, he published a paper, "The first visit to mathematics books in Kyujanggak 奎章閣收藏算書初訪"(2008 Kyujanggak 32, p. 283-293). In his paper, he also raised several research problems on the history of Korean mathematics. In this paper, we analyze his paper "The first visit to mathematics books in Kyujanggak" and give some answers to those raised problems on Korean mathematics. Also we correct some misunderstanding of Horng on some facts. Especially, we make it clear that the author of SinJungSanSul(New Arithmetics 新訂算術) was not Lee Sang-Seol(李相卨), whom Horng considered as the author, but Lee Gyo-Seung(李敎承) through the correct translation of its preface and an article about its copyright lawsuit. And we added some pathways how Chinese mathematics books were imported by Joseon. We introduce the case of Hong Dae-Yong(洪大容) in detail.

Mathematical Rhymes in Oriental Mathematics and Their Didactical Implications (동양 수학에서의 구결 및 그 교수학적 함의)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the meaning and roles of rhymes in oriental mathematics. To do this, we consider the rhymes in traditional chinese, korean, indian, arabian mathematical books and the mathematical knowledge which they implicate. And we discuss the reasons for which they were often used and the roles which they played. In addition, we suggest how to use them in teaching mathematics.

A Comparative Study on Mathematics Curriculums and Textbooks of Spatial Orientation in Elementary School Mathematics (초등학교 수학에서 공간 방향에 대한 교육과정과 교과서 비교)

  • The aim of this study is to look into the meaning and sub-factors of spatial orientation, compare and analyze mathematics curriculums and textbooks of several countries with respect to spatial orientation and offer suggestions to improve teaching spatial orientation in elementary school mathematics in Korea. In order to attain these purposes, this study examined the meaning and sub-factors of spatial orientation through the theoretical consideration regarding various studies on spatial sense. Based on such examination, this study compared and analyzed mathematics curriculums and textbooks used in South Korea, Singapore, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Finland, United States of America, and Germany with respect to contents of mathematics curriculum and textbooks in grades, sub-factors of spatial orientation, and contexts for spatial orientation. In the light of such theoretical consideration and analytical results, this study provided suggestions for improving teaching spatial orientation in elementary schools in Korea as follows: extending content of spatial orientation in mathematics curriculum, emphasizing spatial orientation across the several grades, especially in the upper grades, providing opportunities to learn the sub-factors of location, direction, coordinates, route, and distance variously, and utilizing various familiar and realistic contexts in the world around students.

The connection between illustrations and contents in elementary mathematics textbooks (초등학교 수학교과서 그림과 내용의 연계성)

  • The picture of the mathematics curriculum should carry the complex role of relieving the difficulties of mathematics while conveying the core of the mathematics contents well. This study examined the precedence of picture and text harmony and the importance of emotional expression. The discussion of children's picture books became an important reference in this process. The understanding of the child's psychology and cognitive characteristics in the long history of picture books and the insight into the relationship between text and pictures will be important guidelines for elementary school textbooks. Based on these previous studies, this study found some impressive examples of Chinese, Japanese, Indian, and American textbooks on the two complementary relationships between paintings and texts and emotional expressions of paintings. If necessary, we compared these textbooks with Korean textbooks. Through this analysis, this study draws some implications for Korean textbook drawing and textbook production process. That is, the process of reading the picture and interpreting its meaning should be treated as part of the study of mathematics. The mathematical concepts to be dealt with or the sentence description of the problem should be concurrent with the design of the picture. The monotonous expressions and dialogues of characters in textbooks should be avoided, and the personality and emotions of characters should be more abundant and freely expressive.

A Study on the Assessment Contents and Construction of Mathematics in the College Scholastic Ability Test of China (중국 대학입학시험의 수학 평가내용 및 구성 고찰)

  • A formal name of the college scholastic ability test of China is P$\check{u}$tongg$\bar{a}$od$\check{e}$ngxu$\acute{e}$xi$\grave{a}$o zh$\bar{a}$osh$\bar{e}$ng Qu$\acute{a}$ngu$\acute{o}$ t$\check{o}$ngy$\bar{i}$k$\check{a}$osh$\grave{i}$(普通高等學校初生全國統一考試), abbreviated to Gaokao(高考). Gaokao is very similar to Korea's College Scholastic Ability Test in that the two exams are measuring test-taker's knowledge and ability included in highschool curriculum and that they are the selective examinations which persons with at least a high school diploma or the equivalent apply for. Therefore, helpful implications for College Scholastic Ability Test of Korea can be drawn from the study of assessment contents and construction of mathematics in Gaokao.

  • This study investigated the learning process of Chines international student within a technology environment, who was studying in Korea to be well equipped as a math teacher in future. Her activities were observed and guided in a class for pre-service teachers in one university, Kyunggido, in the second semester of 2014. She experienced obstacles such as the lacks of comprehending Korean sentences, Korean math terminologies, mathematical concepts, and fidelities of technology in her learning. She was recovered by bilingual effect, visualization activities, repetition activities, and group activities. There was a learning helper who made her learning possible in a bilingual way. Thus, the bilingual education is crucial for students with multi-cultural background.

A viewpoint of mathematics through the preface of the mathematics text(算學書) (산학서의 서문(序文)에 나타난 산학(算學)에 대한 인식)

  • In this study we review the representations used for emphasizing the significance and requirement of mathematics in Chinese and Korean mathematics text(算學書). Especially, we study four terms; first 六藝之一(육예지일, one of the six arts), second 伏義(복희, Fuxi) 周公(주공, Zhougong) 孔子(공자, Kongzi) 孔門(공문, Kongmen), third 道(도, dao) (색, ze) 微奧(미오, weiai) 精微(정미, jingwei), forth 經世之實用(경세지실용, usefulness in the real life). Through these representations that can be seen in the many mathematics text, we consider the author's efforts to improve the mathematics.

Different Approaches of Introducing the Division Algorithm of Fractions: Comparison of Mathematics Textbooks of North Korea, South Korea, China, and Japan (분수 나눗셈 알고리즘 도입 방법 연구: 남북한, 중국, 일본의 초등학교 수학 교과서의 내용 비교를 중심으로)

  • This article compares and analyzes mathematics textbooks of North Korea, South Korea, China and Japan and draws meaningful ways for introducing the division algorithm of fractions. The analysis is based on the five contexts: 'measurement division', 'determination of a unit rate', 'reduction of the quantities in the same measure', 'division as the inverse of multiplication or Cartesian product', 'analogy with multiplication algorithm of fractions'. The main focus of the analysis is what context is used to introduce the algorithm and how much it can appeal to students. This analysis supports that there is a few differences of introducing methods the division algorithm of fractions among those countries and more meaningful way can be considered than ours. It finally suggests that we teach the algorithm in a way which can have students easily see the reason of multiplying the reciprocal of a divisor when they divide with fractions. For this, we need to teach the meaning of a reciprocal of fraction and consider to use the context of determination of a unit rate.
