The Comparative Analysis of Port Tariff on the World Major Ports and the Empirical Analysis between Port Tariff and Macro Economic Indicators (세계 주요항만의 항만요율 비교분석 및 거시경제지표와의 실증분석)

  • Many studies on port tariff have been done over twenty years using publicly assessed data on tariff. Public data for tariff rates do not reflect, however, the port tariff in a real market, since the cargo handling charge, which is the important fraction of port tariff, is confidentially decided by the negotiations between a shipping company and a container terminal operator. In this paper, we collected the real price data of the port tariff on the world major sixteen container ports from a global shipping company and transformed it into the tariff per TEU(US$/TEU). The comparative analysis of port tariff was performed using the port tariff per TEU, and a panel regression analysis was done to identify the relations between the port tariff and demand variables: throughput, GDP and trade amount.

Analysis of Efficiency and Productivity for Major Korean Seaports using PCA-DEA model (PCA-DEA 모델을 이용한 국내 주요항만의 효율성과 생산성 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Korea has been huge investments in its port system, annually upgrading its infrastructure to turn the ports into Asian hub port. However, while Busan port is ranked fifth globally for container throughput, Other Korean ports are ranked much lower. This article applies Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) and Malmquist Productivity Index (MPI) to evaluate selected major Korean seaports' operational efficiency and productivity from 2010 to 2018. It further integrates Principal Component Analysis (PCA) into DEA, with the PCA-DEA combined model strengthening the basic DEA results, as the discriminatory power weakens when the variable number exceeds the number of Decision Making Units(DMU). Meanwhile, MPI is applied to measure the seaports' productivity over the years. The analyses generate efficiency and productivity rankings for Korean seaports. The results show that except for Gwangyang and Ulsan port, none of the selected seaports is currently efficient enough in their operations. The study also indicates that technological progress has led to impactful changes in the productivity of Korean seaports.

The Correlation between Port Tariff and Size in the World Major Ports (세계 주요항만의 항만요율과 항만규모와의 관계분석)

  • This paper analyzes the effects of port size on port tariff using the data for world major sixteen container ports. Some previous studies show that demand for port services have significant effects on port tariff, but we cannot find studies analyzing the correlation between the supply variables and the port tariff. In this paper, we used the five supply variables, which are the number of gantry crane, the number of berth, the quay length, the terminal area and the storage capacity for containers. The panel regression results are as follows. Port tariff generally decreases as port size increases, which shows that port tariff is explained by the economic theory. However, increase of port size, in some cases, does not reduce port tariffs, which may be due to monopolistic characteristics of port. This paper also shows that both demand and supply factors affect port tariff, but that demand factors have more consistent effect on port tariff than supply factors.

A Study on the Impact of Liner Shipping Network Characteristics to the World Regional Major Port performance (세계 주요지역 항만의 네트워크 특성이 성과에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the network characteristics of ports and their performance that is represented by port competitiveness for the port operators. The study employs Social Network Analysis (SNA) to evaluate network characteristics comprising four centrality indices. For this research, data from Containerization International Yearbooks for 2006-2011 is used to analyze the service networks of 20 major liner shipping companies. In SNA, nodes (vertices) in the network are the ports and links (edges) in the network are connections realized by vessel movements, such that the liner shipping network determines the port network. In addition, panel regression analysis has been employed to investigate the relationship between port network characteristics and their performance. The results suggest that the four centrality indices identify the roles of the world's major ports from 2006 to 2011 and that port performance is determined not only by macroeconomic variables and service capabilities but also by the eigenvector centrality of ports in networks.

Overall Analysis of Competitiveness of Asian Major Ports Using the Hybrid Mechanism of FCM and AHP (FCM법과 AHP법을 융합한 아시아 주요항만의 경쟁력에 관한 종합적 분석에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this research is to overall analyze/classify characteristics of Asian major ports. To achieve this aim, we firstly pointed out critical problems on research methodology and research scope which most of previous research have, from related literature review. In order to overcome those problems, major ports in A냠 were selected by the objective indicators, and both algorithms of AHP(Analytic Hierarchical Process) and FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) that revise weakness in previous clustering method were used. Through these hybrid approach, it were found that only 10 ports of 16 major Asian ports had their own phases in Asian major ports. Those 10 ports were classified into 6 port groups, and also membership degree of each port within the 4 port groups and ranking of each ports seer analyzed. Finally, based on results of these analysis, present status and future direction of Busan port were discussed.

  • 최근 세계경기 침체 여파로 전국 항만의 물동량이 감소하는 가운데 인천항의 물동량 또한 증가율이 2007년 20.8%에서 2008년 2.0%로 급격하게 둔화되었으며 2009년도 1/4분기(1-3월)전체 물동량은 309,930백 톤으로 전년동기(379,540백 톤)보다 18.3% 감소하였다. 이에 항만당국은 경기침체와 같은 대외환경의 변화와 주변항만의 적극적인 물량 유치를 위하여 인센티브 정책을 개편하는 등의 전략을 마련하고 있다. 따라서 본 논문은 국내 주요항만의 인센티브 정책을 분석하고 그 시사점을 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

An Application of FCM(Fuzzy C-Means) for Clustering of Asian Ports Competitiveness Level and Status of Busan Port (FCM법을 이용한 아시아 항만의 경쟁력 수준 분류와 부산항의 위상)

  • Due to the changes of shipping and logistic environment, Asian ports today face severe competition. To be a mega-hub port, Asian ports have achieved a big scale development. For these reasons, it has been widely recognized as an important study to analyze and evaluate characteristics of Asian ports, from the standpoint of Korea where Busan Port is located. Although some previous studies have been reported, most of them have been beyond the scope of Asian ports and analyzed the world's major ports; moreover, the studied ports have been about the ports which are well known from the previous research and reports. So, most studies is unlikely to be used as substantial indicators from the perspective of Busan Port. In addition. most of the existing studies have used hierarchical evaluation algorithm for port ranking, such as AHP (analytical hierarchy process) and clustering analysis. However, these two methods have fundamental weaknesses from the algorithm perspective. The aim of this study is to classify major Asian ports based on competitiveness level. Especially. in order to overcome serious problem of the existing studies, major Asian ports were analyzed by using objective indicators. and Fuzzy C-Means algorithm, which alleviates the weakness of the clustering method. It was found that 10 ports of 16 major Asian ports have their own phases and were classified into 4 port groups. This result implies that some ports have higher potential as ports to lead some zones in Asia. Based on those results. present status and future direction of Busan port were discussed as well.

엘살바도르 주요 항만의 항만개발 F/S 및 기본계획수립 사례

  • 본 연구는 해양수산부가 지원하는 해외항만개발협력사업의 일환으로, 중미국가인 엘살바도르 주요 2개항의 항만개발 타당성조사 및 기본계획 수립을 목적으로 하되 장래 해외항만개발사업에서 참고할 수 있도록 정리하였다. 주요 내용으로는 국가 일반현황 및 지역분석, 인프라 현황 분석, 시장조사 및 물동량 수요추정, 항만 개발규모 및 중장기 개발방향 제시, 경제성 및 재무성 분석을 통해 수원국에 필요한 국가 상위계획 자료를 제공하는 것이며, 연구결과가 계획에만 그치지 않도록 사업시행을 위한 재원조달 방안 및 항만 활성화 방안 등 실질적 사업현실화 방안을 제시하였다.
