  • The CNG pressure vessel is manufactured by a deep drawing and ironing (D.D.I) process for forming cylinder parts, followed by a spinning process for formation of the dome part. However, studies on the buckling phenomenon of the dome part and formation of the inlet part have not been performed yet, and the CNG pressure vessel is produced by the experience of the field engineers and the trial and error method. In this study, buckling phenomenon during the spinning process was predicted by comparing critical buckling loads obtained through theoretical analysis with axial loads from the FEA, and a method for preventing buckling of the dome part was proposed by employing commercial software (Forge NxT 1.0.2). Also, to form the inlet part, forming loads of the roller at contact point between the roller and the dome part were analyzed according to radii of the dome part, and the inlet part was formed by controlling the radius of the dome part.

  • A clearly consistent finite element formulation for geometrically non-linear analysis of space frames is presented by applying incremental equilibrium equations based on the updated Lagrangian formulation and introducing Vlasov's assumption. The improved displacement field for symmetric cross sections is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations, and the potential energy corresponding to the semitangential rotations and moments is consistently derived. For finite element analysis, elastic and geometric stiffness matrices of the space frame element are derived by using the Hermitian polynomials as shape functions. A co-rotational formulation in order to evaluate the unbalanced loads is presented by separating the rigid body rotations and pure deformations from incremental displacements and evaluating the updated direction cosines of the frame element due to rigid body rotations and incremental member forces from pure deformaions. Finite element solutions for the spatial buckling and post-buckling analysis of space frames are compared with available solutions and other researcher's results.

  • Because the previous design procedure for the composite wind turbine blade structure using trial and error method takes long time, a improved design procedure by using the program based on classical laminate theory was proposed to reduce the inefficient element. According to the improved design procedure, limitation of strains, stresses and displacements specified by international standard specification IEC1400-1 for the composite wind turbine blade were applied to sizing the structural configuration by using the rule of mixture and the principal stress design technique with a simplified turbine blade. Structural safety for strength and buckling stability was confirmed by the developed analysis program based on the laminate theory to minimize the design procedure. After modifying the preliminary design result with additional structural components such as skin, foam sandwich and mounting joints, stresses, strains, displacements, natural frequency, buckling load and fatigue life were analyzed by the finite element method. Finally these results were confirmed by comparing with IEC1400-1 specification.

  • A study on the evaluation of proper spacing and required flexural rigidity of cross beams in composite two I-section steel girder bridges without a lateral and sway bracing system was performed. Specifically, a 2-lane, 40-m simple span bridge and a 3-span continuous (40+50+10m) bridge were designed, and structural analyses under dead load before and after composite, live, wind, and seismic loads were performed using spacing and flexural rigidity or cross beams as parameters. Through parametric analysis, the effect on the stresses due to the combination of loads and live load distribution was investigated. In addition. material and geometric nonlinear analyses under dead load before composite were performed to evaluate the lateral buckling strength of the steel girders and cross beam. Based on the results or such analyses, the proper spacing and flexural rigidity of cross beams at intermediate points and supports were proposed.

  • In this study, the use of a condensed model is proposed for the simulation of forming of sandwich sheet with pyramid core. A corresponding finite element analysis for L-type bending is carried out to prove the accuracy and the effectiveness. In order to improve the accuracy of forming analysis, more precise modeling of core shape and consideration of work-hardening of previous core forming are carried out. Simulation results are compared with those of experiment. Deformation shape and post-buckling behavior by simulation are in good agreement with those of experiment for the considerable range of deformation. From the comparison of force-displacement curve, it is shown that the proposed model shows good prediction of post-buckling behavior.

  • This study proposed a convenient seismic design procedure for buckling-restrained braced frames based on the equivalent energy concept. The design process begins with the computation of input energy from response spectrum. Then the elastic energy and plastic energy are computed based on the equal energy concept. The computed plastic energy is distributed to each story along energy distribution ratio and the cross-sectional area of each brace is computed so that all the plastic energy is dissipated by the brace. The proposed procedure was applied to the design of three-, six-, and twenty-story steel frames with buckling-restrained braces, and artificial earthquake records were used for verification of the proposed method. According to analysis results, top story displacements of the low-rise structure satisfies the given target displacement however that of the twenty-story structure was much smaller than the given target displacement.

  • Pultruded fiber reinforced polymeric plastic (PFRP) structural members may be one of attractive alternatives of the structural members in the civil engineering applications because of its many advantageous mechanical properties. However, they have relatively low modulus of elasticity and also cross-sections of structural shapes are composed of thin plate components such as flange and web. Therefore, structural stability is an important issue in the design of pultruded structural compression members. For the design of pultruded structural member under compression, buckling and post-buckling strengths of plate components may be taken into account. In the structural steel design following AISC/LRFD, in addition to the buckling strength, the nonuniform stress distribution in the section is incorporated with a form factor. In this paper, the form factor for the design of PFRP structural member under compression is investigated through the analytical study. Furthermore, the process for the determination of the form factor is suggested.

  • The steel braces are used to control the lateral drift of high rise buildings. The braces are designed as tensile members since the braces consisted of slender member can not resist compressive loads by elastic buckling. To resolve this problem, a lot of research were performed to develop the non-buckling member. The force limiting device (FLD.) is one of them. The purpose of this study is the development of FLD. to prevent a elastic buckling for a slender member. The folded plate type is proposed to induce the yielding before occurring elastic buckling. In this study, member test and FEM analysis for proposed type were performed. Further, It is verified that the structure with FLD member is stable by high energy absorption. The proposed folded plate type FLD could be effective to preserve the compressive member from the elastic buckling.

  • In this paper the seismic performances of 4, 10, and 30-story staggered truss systems (STS) were evaluated by observing the force-displacement relationship up io failure. The results were compared with the seismic performance of conventional moment resisting frames and braced frames. According to the analysis results, the STS showed relatively satisfactory lateral load resisting capability. However, in the mid- to high-rise STS, plastic hinges formed first at the chords were transferred to vertical members of the vierendeel panels, which formed a week link and subsequently leaded to brittle collapse of the structure. Therefore to enhance the ductility of STS it would be necessary to reinforce the vertical bracing members of the virendeel panels so that the plastic hinges, once toned in cord members of a virendeel panel, spread out to virendeel panels of neighboring stories.
