  • Post-local buckling behavior is a very important consideration in plastic and seismic design of steel structures. It describes the structural behavior up to the final collapse state. In order to assess the actual reliability of structures under severe repeated loading, such as strong earthquakes, it is necessary to evaluate the progressive cyclic deterioration of stiffness as well as the strength and energy dissipation capacity of the structures after local buckling happens. In this study, a simple analytical model developed for predicting post-local buckling behavior for cyclic and non-proportional loading histories, has been proposed. This analytical model uses the stress resultant model based on the two surface model. Analytical moment-curvature relationship using this model compare well with the experimental results in constant amplitude cycling, and linearized energy deterioration which is very important in seismic design can be predicted from the proposed model.

  • This paper presented the nonlinear behaviors of the single-layered lattice dome, which is widely used for the long-span structure system. The behaviors were analysed through the classical shell buckling theory as the single-layered lattice dome behaves like continum thin shell due to its geometric characteristics, and finite element analysis method using the software program Nastran. Shell buckling theory provides two types of buckling loads, the global- and member buckling, and finite element analysis provides the ultimate load of geometric nonlinear analysis as well as the buckling load of Eigen value solution. Two types of models for the lattice dome were analysed, that is rigid- and pin-jointed structure. Buckling load using the shell buckling theory for each type of lattice dome, governed by the minimum value of global buckling or member buckling load, resulted better estimation than the buckling load with Eigen value analysis. And it is useful to predict the buckling pattern, that is global buckling or member buckling.

  • This study contains the static buckling tests and static buckling analyses for small size grids and full size grids. The buckling tests and finite element analyses were performed to evaluate the buckling characteristics of the spacer grids in a pressurized water reactor fuel assembly and to evaluate the possibility of the prediction lot the buckling strength of spacer grids. The buckling tests were performed for small size grids and full size grids, and the correlations between buckling strength and the number of straps and the correlations between buckling strength and the number of rows are derived based on the test results. The static buckling analyses were performed to identify the effect of the number of rows and the number of columns on the buckling strength of spacer grid by a finite element method using ANSYS program and the results were compared with the buckling test results.

  • This paper describes the moment capacity of flexural members with local buckling based on a series of FE and experiment results. Thin-walled flexural members undergo local, lateral-torsional, or interactive buckling according to the section geometries and lateral boundary conditions. Flexural members with large width-to-thickness ratios in the flanges or the web may undergo local buckling before lateral-torsional buckling. Local buckling has a negative effect on the flexural strength based on the lateral-torsional buckling of flexural members. This phenomenon should be considered in the estimation of the flexural strength of thin-walled sections. Flexural members with various width-to-thickness ratios in their flanges and web were analyzed. Initial imperfections in the local buckling mode, and residual stresses, were included in the FE analyses. Simple bending moment formulae for flexural members were proposed based on the FE and test results to account for local and lateral-torsional buckling. The proposed bending moment formulae for the thin-walled flexural members in the Direct Strength Method use the empirical strength formula and the grosssection modulus. The ultimate flexural strengths predicted by the proposed moment formulae were compared with the AISC (2005), Eurocode3 (2003), and Korean Highway Bridge Design Specifications (2010). The comparison showed that the proposed bending moment formulae can reasonably predict the ultimate moment capacity of thin-walled flexural members.

  • Since the kinetic energy is dissipated through plastic deformation energy generated in expanding process of the tube by a die. In order to successfully absorb the kinetic energy there should be no buckling in the expansion tube during expanding process. The buckling instability of the expansion tubes is affected by the initial boundary conditions, tube thickness and length. In this study, the effects of the tube thickness except length and initial boundary condition on the buckling instability are studied using a finite element method. In addition, Analysis procedure for nonlinear post-buckling analysis of expansion tube is established. There are three kinds of finite element analysis procedures for buckling analysis of expansion tube, quasi-static analysis, linear buckling analysis and nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The effect of the geometry imperfections defined as linear superimposition of buckling modes is considered in the nonlinear post-buckling analysis. The results of finite element analysis indicate that the buckling load increase with increase of thickness of tube and geometry imperfection. Finial buckling shapes are changed with respect to the geometry imperfection.

  • The single layer latticed dome is very sensitive on the slenderness ratio and half open angle of the elements, load condition, and the connection type because it is organized by a lot of thin elements, so we have to use the geometrically nonlinear buckling load when the buckling of the structures is analyzed. But, it is very difficult to design the single layer latticed domes considered all renditions. Therefore the purpose of this paper is to propose the appropriate design method of the single layer latticed dome considered the geometrically nonlinear buckling load in base of the linear buckling load by the eigenvalue analysis.

  • Two-element plate concept is incorporated into the buckling problem in order to simplify the nonlinear distribution of stress through the thickness of plate. Finite element formulations and programs based upon the Reissner functional and the modified Reissner functional using two-element plate concept are developed for buckling analysis of plates under axial compression. The two programs have been applied to obtain the linear elastic buckling behavior of axially compressed flat plates. Excellent agreement of linear elastic-solution results with exact or approximate solutions of other authors for the same boundary conditions proves the validity of the finite element method using two-element plate theory.

  • System buckling analysis is usually used to determine the critical buckling load in the buckling design of cable-stayed bridges. However, system buckling analysis may yield unexpectedly large effective lengths of the members subjected to a relatively small axial force. This paper proposes a new method to determine reasonable effective lengths of girder and tower members in steel cable-stayed bridges using fictitious axial forces. An improved inelastic buckling analysis with modified tangent modulus is also presented. The effective lengths of members in example bridges calculated using the proposed method are compared with those obtained using the conventional buckling analysis method. The proposed method provides much more resonable effective lengths of the members. When girder and tower members are built with HSB800 steel instead of conventional steel, the effective lengths of the members under a small axial force slightly decreases in the inelastic buckling analysis without fictitious axial forces, while the proposed method that considers fictitious axial forces provides almost no changes in such lengths.

  • This paper investigates the in-plane stability of fixed shallow arches. The shape of the arches is parabolic and the uniformly distributed load is used in the study. The nonlinear governing equilibrium equation of the general arch is adopted to derive the incremental form of the load-displacement relationship and the buckling load of the fixed shallow arches. From the results, it is found that buckling modes (symmetric or asymmetric) of the arches are closely related to the dimensionless rise H, which is the function of slenderness ratio and the rise to span ratio of such arches. Moreover, the threshold of different buckling modes and buckling load for fixed shallow arches are proposed. A series of finite element analysis are conducted and then compared with proposed ones. From the comparative study, the proposed formula provides the good prediction of the buckling load of fixed shallow arches.

  • The thin cylindrical shell structure under compression should be checked with buckling stability. Initial imperfection effects on buckling strength has been investigated by many researchers. Even though there have been a number of these studies, more studies of buckling strength with various initial imperfections are still necessary. In Eurocode, there is a design parameter that is applicable only on specific imperfection by section thickness rather than on various initial imperfection. In this study, structural analyses, using geometry and material nonlinear analysis, of cylindrical buckling strength with various initial imperfection were performed and compared with Eurocode design strength and Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis results. Moreover, the modified design parameter, which gives more exact prediction result of buckling strength under bending with initial imperfection, is proposed for various initial imperfections.
