  • In this study, to disseminate the Practical On-site Cooperation Model (POCoM) for practical improvement of science teaching and learning through cooperation between researcher and teacher, an in-service program has been developed, applied and evaluated. The in-service program emphasizes the following three aspects; (1) video-recording of actual science teaching has been used as a primary resource, (2) communication between teacher and researcher and among teachers have been emphasized, (3) activities have been mainly included. The in-service program has been implemented for nine hours, and 17 science teachers have been recruited as volunteers. The result shows that, by checking the agreements between raters, we found that teachers' expertise in analyzing the science class using the Korean Teaching Observation Protocol (KTOP) has improved, and we have confirmed that teachers are able to judge whether the science class has improved or not. Through the questionnaire, various highly positive responses could be obtained from teachers. And through the observation of teachers' activities during the in-service program, teachers' questions, their difficulties in doing activities, and their comments for improving the program has also been analyzed. Finally, based on the results, a list of recommendations for a more effective in-service program have been suggested. It is expected that this list can be utilized for more effective and meaningful design and implementation of in-service course.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the perception on video material making and the effect on science teaching ability after conducting non-face-to-face teaching material making activity for elementary pre-service teachers. This activity consisted two processes. One is that elementary pre-service teachers conduct inquiry, understand related science concepts, analyze science textbooks and then make video material. The other is that they watch video materials produced by colleagues. This study was conducted on 89 elementary pre-service teachers for 8 weeks. After this activity was completed, the perception on video material making and the effect on science teaching ability of elementary pre-service teachers were investigated, and the results were analyzed. In the process of making and watching non-face-to-face teaching materials, elementary pre-service teachers showed positive results in teaching-learning, video production, and emotion and attitude toward video material making. In addition, it was found that they improved their science teaching ability through this activity and were very satisfied with this activity. However, they also mentioned several disappointments such as exclusion of learners' right to self-determination, lack of various communication channels, and errors in content of materials. This suggests that if these problems are solved, non-face-to-face classes can also be a good form of class.

  • Using interesting video clips corresponding to lesson subjects for students who favour visual representation is one of the good methods to enhance students' preference for science class. There are many moving picture web sites to get video clips easily via internet and 'YouTube' is very popular and one of the largest reservoir. In this study, every student in the 'Chemistry I' class, which is a class for 11th grade, was requested to search a video clip corresponding to lesson subjects and to make a presentation in the class. After 1st semester, students' response about the class using YouTube was examined by survey. As a result, students preferred and were interested in the class using YouTube than class centered on textbook. And students preferred YouTube clips showing unusual experiments that were related with contents of subject. In addition, experiments and watching their real phenomena were an interesting factor and helpful factor of learning chemistry in YouTube video clips, respectively. However, translation of English used in the video clips seemed to be a difficult part for students.

  • This study aims to investigate the characteristics of verbal interaction in science class demonstrations conducted by elementary school pre-service teachers. Specifically, the study intends to examine the use of elements of verbal interaction and the progression of these interactions. Additionally, the study intends to analyze the perception of pre-service teachers about effective questioning and feedback and to determine the correlation between the proportions of the types of questioning and feedback positively perceived by the pre-service teachers and of the types of questioning and feedback used during class demonstration. Toward this end, the study analyzed the science class demonstration videos and class evaluation sheets submitted by 38 fourth-year students at the S University of Education. The results are as follows. First, pre-service elementary school teachers generally use close-ended questions during science class demonstrations. Moreover, they predicted that students would primarily provide the correct responses and would not engage in extended interaction by providing immediate feedback for the responses of the majority of the students. Second, pre-service elementary school teachers perceived the utilization of close-ended questions and immediate feedback in science class demonstrations more favorably than they did that of open-ended questions and delayed feedback. The study observed a weak positive correlation between the positive perception of specific types of questions and feedback and the use of such types in class demonstration. The results demonstrated that pre-service elementary school pre-service teachers tend to engage in fragmented verbal interactions during science class demonstrations. They primarily use close-ended questions and immediate feedback. This tendency is seemingly related to their perception of questions and feedback. Therefore, education institutions for training pre-service teachers need to provide opportunities for reflecting on verbal interactions, which tend to involve close-ended questions and immediate feedback. Lastly, assessing the perception of pre-service teachers of questions and feedback is also necessary.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the changes of students' modeling ability in terms of 'meta-modeling knowledge' and 'modeling practice' through co-construction of scientific model. Co-construction of scientific model instructions about astronomy were given to 41 middle-school students. The students were given a before and after instruction modeling ability tests. The results show that students' 'meta-modeling knowledge' has changed into a more scientifically advanced thinking about models and modeling after the instruction. Students were able to be aware that 'they could express their thoughts using models', 'many models could be used to explain a single phenomena' and 'scientific models may change' through co-construction modeling process. The change in the 'modeling practice' of the students was divided into four cases (the level improving, the level lowering, the high-level maintaining, the low-level maintaining) depending on the change of pre-posttest levels. The modeling practice level of most students has improved through the instruction. These changes were influenced by co-construction process that provides opportunities to compete and compare their models to other models. Meanwhile, the modeling practice level of few students has lowered or maintained low level. Science score of these students at school was relatively high and they thought that the goal of learning is to get a higher score in exams by finding the correct answer. This means that students who were kept well under traditional instruction may feel harder to adapt to co-construction of scientific model instruction, which focuses more on the process of constructing knowledge based on evidences.

  • We incorporated cooperative learning focusing on the 'Crustal Deformation' in five classes of second grade students, at an all-girls' middle school of Gimje city. The groups of cooperative learning were composed of four members of students each, according to the heterogeneous level. We conducted a pretest on the students' preference before incorporating the cooperative learning. After ten weeks of cooperative school work, the students took a post test with the same questions as the pretest. The result of this method greatly impacted the change on the students' scientific preference. It means that the students showed a positive change in their awareness of and participation in science classes, compared to before. However it is difficult to distinguish the differences in their scientific attitude on the recognition about scientists and habits which make them think scientifically. This resulted from the short period of ten weeks which is not sufficient to carry out the study strategy effectively. Surveys of the students on cooperative learning indicates that the middle level students prefer this method unlike the higher or lower level students. we are convinced that they can learn from the students of higher level and are able to help the lower level with the interaction through cooperative learning. According to the result of the survey, the method has some weaknesses; it arouses the high noise levels and consequent disturbance due to verbal interaction and of conflicts due to disagreements when they discuss the process. On the contrary, advantages are developing the students's interest in science class, helping them to learn, creating positive participation in class, and fostering mutual collaboration with other students through cooperative learning.

  • This study investigated the effects of the application of a variety of ICTs cause the effects on self-directed learning capability, creativity and problem-solving ability. In order to achieve the above aim, Web-Based Instructions(WBI) and instructions using CD-ROM Titles for the unit of 'the solar system and the galaxy' were applicated and analyzed which belongs to the area of 'the earth' in the subject 'science' for high school students. Instructions using WBI materials and CD-ROM titles were found to be effective on 'self-conception', 'creativity', 'future inclination', 'self-assessment ability', 'openness' and' initiative' improvement all of which belong to self-directed learning characteristics. They did not, however, show meaningful effect on improving 'learning eagemess' and 'responsibility' improvement. On looking into self-directed learning characteristics according to prerequisite learning levels, both groups and these for instruction using CD-ROM learning materials were found to have no effect on interaction. With respect to problem-solving ability improvement which is characteristic of the instruction using ICTs, WBI proved more fruitful than instruction using CD-ROM titles on improving scholastic achievement level. WBI was effective on 'fluency', 'originality' and 'resistance to premature closure'. It on the other hand, was of no use on 'abstraction of titles' and 'elaborateness' These results came from the following characteristics: WBI came into effect on 'fluency' and 'originality' in the areas of variety and vitality, which are characteristic of WBI. In the area of resistance to premature closure WBI was effective on organizing learning contents owing to the animation of picture materials which are variously presented in the web site. As a result of WBI questionnaire about WBI, an excellent effect on the structure of display, quantity of information, indication and instruction, supplementary study and further study were discussed.
