  • B. mandarina of Korean population apparently differs B. mori in isozyme analysis. Fourteen polymorphism occurred B. mandarina not in B. mori at 6 isozymes, Bph, Bes, Amy-hc, Ies, Ict-D, Ict-E. Korean population has shared with the Korean native strain of B. mori in B genotype of Bes, F of Amy-hc, n of Ict-E, M and S of Ict-H. These 5 genotype were known that detection only Korean native strains of B. mori. Nei's genetic distance based on the genotype of isozyme and hemolymph protein using 4 populations of B. mandarina varied from 0.0350 to 0.0624. The distances of 0.0350 is between Jinju and Chilgok population and between Jinju and Kosung population has the largest distances, 0.0624. In genus of Bombyx, B. mandarina and B. mori, genetic distance varied from 0.3822 to 0.5074. Phylogenetic tree obtained using the subprogram UPGMA of NTSYS represented that Bombyx devided two group, B. mandarina and B. mori. B. mandarina has genetic differences according to the population within the Korean peninsula, but that was not recognized genetic variation or divergence considering low values of genetic distance.

  • The oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the foraminiferal species, Elphidirm dtigoense and Ammonia beccarii tepida, of the tidal flat in the Gomso Bay of the western coast of Korea have been measured. This work was intended to study the relationship between oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions of the foraminifera and present oceanographic environments, and also the difference between two foraminiferal species. The values of $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C of E. dtigoense varied from - 3.20% to + 0.58% and from - 5.26% to - 0.93%, respectively. The values of $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C of A. beccarii tepida varied from - 1.11% to + 0.61% and from - 2.04% to - 1.40%, respectively. Mo significant variations in these values occur from the samples among the upper, middle and lower tidal zones except for the one from the upper tidal zone that has extremely low value. The difference between the two foraminiferal species was 0.20% and 1.63% in the average values of $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C, respectively. The relationship between $\delta$/SUP 18/O and $\delta$/SUP 13/C values was positive in interspecies of two species.

  • Morphological reinvestigation, external characters and discriminant functional analysis(44 qualitative characters) were examined on 6 taxa of Korean Ophelia, including 5 taxa distributed in south Korea, and one taxon considered to be the variation type of Ophelia wilfordi in order to clarify the limit of intersection and interspecies. And to establish the taxonomic position. One taxon distributed in north Korea was included in the description of species by observation of herbarium specimen of the University of Tokyo in Japan. The two sections were successfully distinguished by internal structure of ovary, morphology of nectary, number of corolla lobe and calyx lobe, and species were also distinguished by morphology of cauline leaf, and color and spot of corolla, respectively. The variation type of Ophelia wilfordi was not distinguished with other species except for absent or present of purple spot in corolla lobe. The results of the discriminal functional analysis indicated that characters of corolla were the most important qualitative characters to distinguish the Ophelia taxa, and morphology of seed and seed coat was useful characters to distinguish taxa higher than species. Therefore the difficult problems of identification of species were successfully solved, and the taxonomic position in intrageneric level was clarified on Korean Ophelia.

  • Interactions between species in a community are very complex, and they are visualized and analyzed through a food web in simple way. Food web is a network of species connected by trophic links showing energy flow from prey to predator. Various models were developed to characterize the food web in ecosystems. In this study, we classified food web models to static models such as Ecopath and dynamic models such as AQUATOX. We presented characteristics of several different types of food web models in each category, and reviewed their applications used in aquatic ecosystems. Finally, we presented issues to be considered to develop food web models.

  • A lot of clones of the genus Dioscorea species have been introduced from some tropical and subtropical regions since 1997. The aim of this study was to determine characteristics of the production process in yams(Dioscorea spp). By utilizing 51clones of water yams(Dioscorea spp), some morphological characteristics were investigated at the field. Intraspecific genetic relationship of 51 variation types of the Yam classified by their external morphological characteristics such as leaf and tuber shape were assessed by DNA using random and specific primers. D. Alata and D. opposita were showed different relationship between yield and the growth of their aboveground parts. This suggests that even in the same species there were differences in yield volume and translocation of assimilation products, depending on the types. D. alata were distinguished from others Dioscorea species at 62% level in AFLP analysis. Also in principal component analysis, D. alata were showed the class from II to V.

  • Embryo culture, ovule culture and ovary slice culture were tested to find optimum method for overcoming post fertilization barrier in interspecific crosses between L. longiflorum 'Gelria' and L. cernuum. Although reciprocal crosses between the species were carried out by cut-style pollination method, fruits developed only in crosses of L. longiflorum${\times}$L. cernuum. On the 40 days after pollination, ovaries were sliced into 2-4mm thickness and cultured on a hormone-free Murashige-Skoog (MS) medium, supplemented with 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% sucrose. For the L. longiflorum Gelria'${\times}$L. cernuum cross, ovule development was found to be best at 6% sucrose and a lot of hybrid plant lets established directly from the ovary slice culture and subsequent ovule culture. High concentration of sucrose above 8% made ovules abort or vitrificate from 40 days after culture. In contrast, ovules from the L. cernuum${\times}$L. longiflorum 'Gelria' cross swelled well in ovary slice culture, however, they did not germinated in subsequent ovule culture. On the 60 days after pollination, ovules thicker than 0.6mm was interpreted as one containing embryo. The embryo size ranged from 1.2 mm to 1.7 mm, and in vitro development of the excised embryos was found to be best with the MS medium (pH 5.8), supplemented with $0.1-1 mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ NAA and 6% sucrose. Thick ovules excised 60 days after pollination germinated about 60% as normal seeds in MS medium supplemented with 6% sucrose and free hormone. The ovule culture 60 days after pollination was concluded to be most recommendable to produce interspecific hybrids in large scale crosses between L. longiflorum 'Gelria' and L. cernuum by the reason of easy procedure.

  • This experiment was conducted in order to understand the intra-and the inter-competition of arrowhead, Sagittaria trifolia L., under the conditions of arrowhead monoculture and rice-mixed culture, respectively. In arrowhead monoculture, the infra-specific competition in both shoot length and floral axis number began at 10 plants per $0.5m^2$ and that in leaf number, leaf length, dry shoot weight and formated tuber number did at 5 plants per $0.5m^2$. In the inter-specific competition according to arrowhead density in the constant rice-mixed culture, the plant height and the tiller number of rice decreased at 15 and 5 plants of arrowhead per $0.5m^2$, respectively. The dry top weight and the formated tuber number of arrowhead decreased with increase of arrowhead density. In the inter-competition according to rice plant density in the constant arrowhead-mixed stands, the dry matter weight and the produced tuber number of arrowhead decreased with increase of rice plant density and the plant height and the tiller number of rice also did with that. In the different transplantation time of rice, the growth in arrowhead became less in order of late transplantation>standard one>early one and the plant height and the tiller number of rice became more in order of that by comparing the percentage of growth under the mixed culture to that under the arrowhead monoculture.

  • We studies seed set in the interspecific F1 /backcross hybrids of Lilium species. In the interspecfic hybrid of L. longiflorum cv. Gelria with L.${\times}$ fomolongi cv. Raizan,93% fruit set was obtained by stigmatic pollination in comparison to 53% from cut-style pollination. Accordingly, the number of seed set resulting from stigmatic and cut-style pollination was 147 and 53, respectively. Pollination o( both stigmatic and cut-style pollination resulted in 47% fruit set in the hybrid of L. longiflorum cv. Lorina with L.${\times}$ fomolongi cv. Raizan. However, stigmatic pollination formed 413 seeds, whereas only 24 seeds were obtained by cut-style pollination in this cross. The hybrid of L.${\times}$ fomolongi cv. Raizan with L. longiflorum cv. Come set 40% fruit with a total of 43 seeds by stigmatic pollination. However, no fruit set was observed in cut-style pollination in this hybrid. Backcrossing the F1 hybrid by cut-style pollination of L. longiflorum cv. Lorina ${\times}$ Asiatic hybrid cv. Chicago with the latter parent led to 53% fruit set, and 109 embryos were obtained. Likewise, backcrossing following cut-style pollination of L. longiflorum cv. Lorina ${\times}$ Asiatic hybrid cv. Corsia with the latter parent formed 67% fruits and 107 embryos. However, in the remaining interspecific hybrids, cut-style pollination set no fruit.
