Korean high speed train(HSR-350x) has adopted a combined electrical and mechanical(friction) braking system. Brake blending control unit(BBCU) controls each brake system to fulfill the required brake performances such as braking distance, deceleration and jerk. When the disc brake is applied in the high speed region, the wear of pad is increased rapidly. In this paper, we discuss the optimized patterns of the disc brake force from the view point of braking energy.

The study presents a new testing and analysis method for brake judder on vehicle. For the identification of the excitation mechanism of a brake judder, it is necessary to measure the dynamic brake disc geometry during braking on vehicle. The non-contact sensor system was used to monitor the brake disc geometry. Brake torque variation (BTV) caused by disc thickness variation (DTV) is the primary excitation for brake judder. The mechanical effects generating BTV are linked not only to initial manufacturing tolerances but also to uneven wear. Therefore, the brake disc geometry should be strictly managed to initial condition. The aim of this study has been to measure the dynamic DTV and runout on vehicle and analyze the influence of test parameters on brake judder and compare the disc component with vehicle matching about the DTV Profile. As a result of this study, The amplitude of brake judder is proportional to vehicle speed and fluid pressure fluctuation on braking. The major sources of brake judder are directly related to disc thickness variation and side runout variation of corner assembly (disc, hub. bearing).
This paper presents the thermo-elastic analysis for searching the behavior of carbon/carbon brake system during the braking period and the 3-D stress analysis to find the shape of the brake disk which is safe to the failure. The mechanical properties of the carbon/carbon brake disk were measured for both in-plane and out of plane directions. The mechanical properties were used as the input of the thermo-elastic analysis and 3-dimensional stress analysis for the brake disk. The gap between rotor clip and clip retainer is an important parameter in the loading transfer mechanism of the rotor disk. The change of gap was considered both the mechanical deformation and thermal deformation. Because the rotor clip and clip retainers were not contacted, they were excluded from the analysis model. Rotor disk was modeled by using the cyclic symmetry condition. The contact problems between rotor clip and key drum as well as between rotor disk and rotor were considered. From the results of the 3-D stress analysis, the stress concentration at the key hole of the brake disk was confirmed. The stress distributions were studied thor the variation of the rotation angle of the contact surface and the radius of curvature at the key hole part.

This study numerically simulates brake squeal and validates it experimentally by using a lab-scaled brake dynamometer. The system frequencies of the disc brake are traced with respect to the brake pressure by using a modal test and FEM. Then, the squeal frequencies measured from the brake dynamometer are found to correspond to the brake system mode with the dominant displacement of the caliper and pad. Furthermore, a complex eigenvalue analysis conducted using the finite element model confirms that the caliper mode generating the rotational displacement of the pad becomes unstable owing to the negative friction-velocity slope.
Conventional brake system was used for passenger cars and SUV for a long time. However, the high performance brake system has strongly required because of increase of engine power and customer's favorites etc. In this paper, a new high performance brake system for Europe was proposed. For this system, the high performance caliper and disc were newly developed. The superiorities of the developed high performance brake system were verified via heat capacity, hydraulic stiffness, corrosion and harsh braking mode test. Also, the high performance caliper and disc for the light-weight were applied to AL-Alloy and can obtain the weight reduction effect of 2.9 kg per vehicle. Finally, a developed high performance brake system is expected to be used for realization of the high performance at the same platforms.
This study is concerned with the braking distance estimation using frictional energy rate. First, steady state rolling analysis is performed, and using this result, the braking distance is estimated. Dynamic rolling analysis during entire braking time period is impratical, so that this study divides the vehicle velocity by 10km/h to reduce the analysis time. The multiplication of the slip rate and the shear stress provides the frictional energy rate. Using frictional energy rate, total braking distance is estimated, In addition, ABS(Anti-lock Brake System) is considered, and two type of slip ratios are compared, One is 15% slip ratio for the ABS condition, and the other is 100% slip ratio which leads lo the almost same braking distance as the elementary kinematic theory. A slip ratio is controlled by angular velocity in ABAQUS/Explicit, A 15% slip ratio gives the real vehicle's braking distance when the frictional energy occurred al disk pad is included. Disk pad's frictional energy rate is calculated by the theoretical approach.
The luxury car market has been steadily growing for the last 10 years and it might keep expanding in the future. Furthermore, it is expected to be a very competitive market because luxury cars are considred to reflect the technology level of motor companies. For this reason, it is very important for motor companies to improve performances of luxury vehicles. However, it takes years for the companies to increase the technology level for the high performances. In this paper, we aim to analyze the technologies for high quality brake perfomances through investigation of two luxury vehicle models and develop a new high performance brake system. First, we found out a variety of effective factors for the high performances. Second, we conducted the brake performance analysis to figure out the relationship between brake effort and brake feeling. Finally, we develped the new brake system using carbon ceramic composite materials to satisfy the high quality brake performances.
Composite material is very attractive because it has excellent mechanical property and is possible to lightweight due to the low density. However, composite material is less used compared to other systems in the chassis system because it is very hard to solve NVH problem when composite material is applied to vehicle. Especially, reducing squeal noise of composite brake system is essential to apply it to vehicle successfully. In this paper, we present a new solution to reduce squeal noise of composite brake system. To achieve this goal, we analyze main causes of noise using RCA (Root Cause Analysis), CA (Contradiction Analysis) and sequentially get IFR (Ideal Final Result) to solve the problem. Next, we define the function of composite brake system and derive control factors and noise factors. A variety of tests for factors like chamfer, slot, damping shim, underlayer of brake pad are done. In addition, we analyze level of contribution for control factors theoretically. Finally, we get the effective solution for reducing squeal noise.
The purpose of this paper is to study and analyze the improvement method for the failure examples including the vehicle brake system in actual field. It was verified that the indicator plate of pad wear scratched the brake disk because of wearing after displacement of non- identification parts pad. The caliper of other vehicle was installed with brake system verified the phenomenon produced groove in center point because of one side wear when the pad was not fully contacted with the rub disk by other action surface pressure and pad action condition. It verified that the crack phenomenon fatigue was produced by brake thermal deformation because of decreasing the thickness by grinding to modify the non-uniformed wear of brake disk. It verified that the friction sound was produced by the friction phenomenon because of non-uniformed contact of lining and an alien substance with inner of the drum and lining braking by crack phenomenon with brake drum surface.
The tribiological characteristics such as friction coefficient, friction stability, wear rate and braking temperature between various types of metallic friction materials and heat resistant steel disk, were investigated by using lab-scale dynamometer. Friction materials for high speed train have higher friction coefficient and friction stability as compared to aircraft friction materials even though friction materials for high speed train have lower wear rate. In addition. Cu-matrix friction materials have higher temperature increase rate than Fe-matrix friction materials. All friction surfaces have Fe-base oxide layer after completing test.
