  • The UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) system, including the drone of a variety of fields, which has become an issue and utilized in various fields, has begun to develop in military fields and is actively developed in the commercial field. In various types of UAV systems, which have been developed recently, the communication system that is responsible for the connection between the ground control unit and the UAVs is called the data link. Especially, common data link used in military UAVs is required stability of communication to transmit surveillance and reconnaissance intelligence information and UAV's status. In this paper, the requirement for a modem was defined to secure the communication stability of the common data link used in surveillance UAVs. And, the design of the data link modem to satisfy applicable specifications was proposed. The proposed modem design was verified through the performance measurement of the implemented systems.

  • Despite growing international cooperation for maintenance of international peace and security, wars continue to occur due to conflicted state interests. Continuing conflicts has advanced development of various weapon systems such as global integrated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. However, with a big increase in the number of civilian casualties caused by the weapon systems development, the international community has also advanced diplomatic efforts to minimize deaths of civilian and military personnel. Therefore, it is essential to observe the principle of discrimination between combatants and non-combatants when operating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), better known as drones. Drones have become more capable of distinguishing combatants from non-combatants due to its high-tech prowess. In the operation of drones, any parties involved in combat or the war are responsible for mounting civilian casualties. In addition, it should comply with the principle of proportionality that calls for a balance between results of such action and expected military advantage anticipated from the attack. The rule of proportionality prohibits use of military force which may be expected to cause excessive civilian harm. Drones have been able to track and monitor targets for hours and select the accurate locations of the targets. The aim is to reduce civilian losses and damage to a minimum. Drones meet the standards of Article 51.4 of the Additional Protocol.

  • Drone refers to an unmanned flying system according to the remote control. That is a remote control systems on the ground or a system that automatically or semi auto-piloted system without pilot on board. Drones have been used and developed before for military purposes. However there are currently utilized in a variety of areas such as logistics and distribution of relief supplies disaster areas, wireless Internet connection, TV, video shooting and disaster observation, tracking criminals etc. Especially it can be actively used in activities such as search or the structure of the disaster site, and may be able to detect the movement of people and an attacker using an infrared camera at night. Drones are very effective for private security.

  • In this paper, we proposed a smart target detection system that detects and recognizes a designated target to provide relative motion information when performing a target detection mission of a drone. The proposed system focused on developing an algorithm that can secure adequate accuracy (i.e. mAP, IoU) and high real-time at the same time. The proposed system showed an accuracy of close to 1.0 after 100k learning of the Google Inception V2 deep learning model, and the inference speed was about 60-80[Hz] when using a high-performance laptop based on the real-time performance Nvidia GTX 2070 Max-Q. The proposed smart target detection system will be operated like a drone and will be helpful in successfully performing surveillance and reconnaissance missions by automatically recognizing the target using computer image processing and following the target.

  • Currently, the 4th Industrial Revolution, like other revolutions, is bringing great change and new life to humanity, and in particular, the demand for and use of drones, which can be applied by combining various technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and information and communications technology, is increasing. Recently, it has been widely used to carry out dangerous military operations and missions, such as the Russia-Ukraine war and North Korea's reconnaissance against South Korea, and as the demand for and use of drones increases, concerns about the safety and security of drones are growing. Currently, a variety of research is being conducted, such as detection of wireless communication abnormalities and sensor data abnormalities related to drones, but research on real-time detection of threats using radio frequency characteristic data is insufficient. Therefore, in this paper, we conduct a study to determine whether the characteristic data is normal or abnormal signal data by collecting radio frequency signal characteristic data generated while the drone communicates with the ground control system while performing a mission in a HITL(Hardware In The Loop) simulation environment similar to the real environment. proceeded. In addition, we propose an unsupervised learning-based threat detection system and optimal threshold that can detect threat signals in real time while a drone is performing a mission.

  • Recently, visual object detection and tracking has become a vital role in many different applications. It spans various applications like robotics, video surveillance, and intelligent vehicle navigation. Especially, in current situation where the use of UAVs is expanding widely, detection and tracking to soot down illegal UAVs flying over the sky at airports, nuclear power plants and core facilities is becoming a very important task. The remarkable method in object tracking is correlation filter based tracker like KCF (Kernelized Correlation Filter). But it has problems related to target drift in tracking process for long-term tracking. To mitigate the target drift problem in video surveillance application, we propose a tracking method which uses KCF, adaptive thresholding and Kalman filter. In the experiment, the proposed method was verified by using monochrome video sequences which were obtained in the operational environment of UAV.

  • The video streaming technologies are used in diverse areas including aerospace. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is still being developed so that we are able to use the UAV not only in military areas but also in civil areas. Remotely monitoring and observing a certain area is possible via using video streaming service based on the UAV nowadays. However, UAV is vulnerable to weather conditions, plane's weight, battery capacity and so on, which makes many restrictions of flight time and video streaming services. In order to prolong the video streaming services, we can use a number of UAVs, fly them one by one, and switch video streaming channels. In the paper, we propose the methods how to interchange UAVs' missions and their video streaming channels to provide seamless video stream services.

  • Through the 2014 Donbas conflict and the 2022 Ukraine-Russia war, we are experiencing that the command of the air is no longer only secured by the Air Force. Long-range surveillance reconnaissance and strikes carried out by the Air Force could be replaced by drones and missiles, and the enemy's aerial attacks could be controlled by air defense systems such as Panchir and portable anti-aircraft missiles, allowing ground forces to carry out maneuvers freely. In other words, it is much more advantageous for the air force and the navy to take control of the air through long-distance operations, and the ground forces should support them. Therefore, this study aims to consider the cost-effectiveness aspect of the delivery command of the air; it provides implications for quickly responding to enemy air attacks by developing the air defense weapon system, drones, missiles, precision-guided munitions, etc rather than focusing on expensive fighter jets.
