  • The purpose of this study was to determine the efficient way of stretching technique from three methods, and of stretching duration and frequency. Sretching is known to improve musculotendinous flexibility and joint suppleness, and employed in many warm-up routines during physical activities and athletic performances. The benefits and the rationale of stretching have been reviewed. Many authors agree that, for the best results, static stretching has to be held for approximately 30 sec. in a trial, three trials in a session, at least three times a week for four weeks. Further clinical studies are required for elucidating more informations on this subject.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between preschoolers' motor proficiency and their executive function. Participants were 72 children who participated in individual tests. Motor proficiency was measured by a shortened form of the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency Second Edition(BOT-2). Executive functions were assessed by utilizing the revised version of the four tasks: 'Day-Night Task', 'Dimensional Change Card Sort Task', 'Lift Flag Task' and 'Digit Span Task'. The major findings were as follows. First, the 5-year-olds motor proficiency was found to be better than the 4-year-olds. Second, the 5-year-olds executive function was found to be better than the 4-yeat-olds. Last, the 4-year-olds' and 5-year-olds' motor proficiency was related to their executive function. Concretely, fine manual control of motor proficiency was executive function and there was a high correlation. And behavior response inhibition and working memory of executive function was motor proficiency and there was a high correlation. Data analysis showed that preschoolers' motor proficiency and their executive function were different by their age level and that preschoolers' motor proficiency was correlated with their executive function.

  • Falls are a threat to the physical health of the elderly as well as to their overall quality of life. The purpose of this study was to identify which type of exercise is effective for improving the balance of the elderly, and to obtain the basic data for developing the falls prevention exercise intervention program for the elderly. We compared to the differential effects between rhythmic step exercise and core muscle strengthening exercise in terms of functional balance test and self-reported balance test. Women older than 65 years and under 80 years of age were assigned to one of the step exercise group(21), core muscle exercise group(20), and control group(21), and for 8 weeks, twice per week, 20-30 minutes of exercise were treated. All participants performed one foot static balance test with open and closed eyes. And they responded to self-reported balance test, such as Fall Efficacy Scale(FES) and Activities-specific Balance Confidence(ABC) Scale. The results of statistical analysis are summarized as follows. First, rhythmic stepping exercise was more effective in improving functional balance than core muscle strengthening exercise. In particular, the effect of step exercise was obvious in the one-foot static balance test with open eyes. Second, the self-reported balance test showed better step exercise than core muscle exercise. Specifically, rhythmic step exercise was more effective in enhancing fall efficacy than core muscle exercise. In conclusion, the rhythmic step exercise was more effective in improving the balance ability of the elderly than the core muscle exercise. The rhythmic step exercise is more related to the lower extremity muscles, and especially since the rhythmic step exercise is performed in various ground changes, it seems to have a high similarity to the fall occurrence situation. For future research, we recommended the development of task-oriented ankle proprioceptive exercise intervention program and exercise equipment based on the specific motion situation in which the fall accident occurs in the elderly.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of line dance activity on the balance factors during static standing to reveal the exercise intervention for fall prevention. A 15-week line dance programme was applied to 16 elderly females who aged more than 65 years in the community. Balance ability during static standing was evaluated by the range of center of pressure(cop), the velocity of cop, and sway area that calculated on the basis of ground reaction force data, forces, and moments. The range and velocity of cop in the anterio-posterior were significantly reduced after line dance(p<.01, p<.05, respectively), but change in those of cop in the medio-lateral was not found. It was demonstrated that 16-week line dance activities allow more effective in anterio-posterior stability and sway area of static standing. It was suggested that the effect of fall prevention exercise should be studied more associate with fall from vestibular and sensory system as future study.

  • In this study, a total of 32 individual musculoskeletal examinations were performed to prevent sarcopenia through squatting exercises and corrective exercises in the elderly, and then squatting exercises and corrective exercises were performed twice a week for 12 weeks to apply and improve various exercise programs, and the following results were obtained. Body composition was significantly increased in skeletal muscle mass and basal metabolism after 12 weeks compared to before participation in the exercise program, and static postural balance was significantly improved in front shoulder, pelvic balance and deflection, left leg medial and lateral cervical and thoracic spine, and pelvic tilt after 12 weeks. Dynamic postural balance showed that the composite imbalance index, excessive upper body lean, lumbar lordosis or kyphosis, and single knee tilt and drop were all highly significant postural balances after 12 weeks. As shown in this study, the variety and precise analysis of exercise prescriptions for customized exercise programs for the elderly is very important, and it is necessary to pay attention to research on the maintenance and promotion of elderly health through practical applications in the field.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of changes in body composition due to combined exercise on balance of the 20' obese women. Based on voluntary participation, 21 obese women in twenties were randomly divided into : Control(no exercise, n=7), Group I (aerobic exercise 50 minutes, n=7), Group 2 (combined exercise 50 minutes, n=7). All groups conducted allocated program five times a week for six weeks. At post and pre-experiment and at the time of each measurement, changes of body composition and balance among the three groups were statistically analyed using SPSS 18.0 ver. Compared to pre-experiment, Group I, II showed decrease of weight and body fat rate, but Group II showed both increase of muscle mass and decrease of body mass index(p<0.05). In balance ability, Group II showed improvement of static and dynamic balance, meanwhile Group I showed only improvement of static balance. Therefore, this research showed that combined exercise had positive effects on balance by increasing muscle mass and changing body composition.

  • The perceived position of a flashing target object is generally biased towards the direction of eye movement when there is no reference around the target. Current research examined the localization accuracy of a flashing target relative to a static reference. The perceived location of the target relative to the reference was distorted and the pattern of perceptual distortion systematically depended on the position of the reference relative to the target. This kind of result was consistently observed regardless of the distance between the reference and the target and direction of pursuit eye movement. We have discussed how these results could he explained by the theories previously suggested to explain the localization of objects.

  • This paper presents the computations of the longitudinal and directional stability derivatives for the SDM(Standard Dynamic Model). The static and dynamic derivatives are evaluated at once using forced harmonic oscillations in the pitch and yaw directions. For the numerical simulations, a 3-D Euler solver that uses a dual time stepping method for unsteady time accurate simulations is applied. This work investigates the variation of the derivatives in terms of the Mach number and the several motion parameters. Good agreement of the pitch and yaw stability derivatives with previously published numerical results and experimental results are observed.
