Development of Facial Emotion Recognition System Based on Optimization of HMM Structure by using Harmony Search Algorithm (Harmony Search 알고리즘 기반 HMM 구조 최적화에 의한 얼굴 정서 인식 시스템 개발)

  • In this paper, we propose an study of the facial emotion recognition considering the dynamical variation of emotional state in facial image sequences. The proposed system consists of two main step: facial image based emotional feature extraction and emotional state classification/recognition. At first, we propose a method for extracting and analyzing the emotional feature region using a combination of Active Shape Model (ASM) and Facial Action Units (FAUs). And then, it is proposed that emotional state classification and recognition method based on Hidden Markov Model (HMM) type of dynamic Bayesian network. Also, we adopt a Harmony Search (HS) algorithm based heuristic optimization procedure in a parameter learning of HMM in order to classify the emotional state more accurately. By using all these methods, we construct the emotion recognition system based on variations of the dynamic facial image sequence and make an attempt at improvement of the recognition performance.

  • 전자우편이나 문자 메세지를 이용할 때 겪는 불편함 중 하나는 상대방이나 기계에 정서 정보를 전달하기 어렵다는 점이다. 정서 정보를 메시지에 싣기 위해서는 컴퓨터나 디지털 기기가 정서를 인식하거나 사용자가 정서를 입력해야 한다. 기존의 정서 인식 방법은 생리적, 신체적 측정치를 이용하는 것인데, 이 경우 측정을 위한 별도의 장비가 필요하고 현재 자신의 정서 상태와 다른 정서를 표현할 수 없다는 단점이 있다. 특히 소형 모바일 기기를 이용할 때 다른 측정 장치를 사용하는 것은 더욱 어렵다. 이런 문제를 해결하기 위해 모바일 기기를 사용하는 환경에서 사용자가 원하는 정서를 기계에 입력하기 위해 동작을 이용하려는 연구가 진행되었다(Fargerberg, Stahl, & Hook, 2003). 본 연구에서는 Laban Movement Analysis에서 동작을 구성하는 다섯 요소 중 노력(effort)과 모양(shape) 요소를 재구성하여, 방향성 차원, 무게감 차원, 시간감 차원으로 동작을 구분하고 총 20개의 동작을 선정하였다. 또한 한덕웅과 강혜자(2000)가 수집한 834개 정서 어휘를 평정하여 동작을 통해 표현하고 전달되기 쉬운 정서 어휘 50개를 선택하였다. 최종 실험에서 참가자들은 20개의 동작에 대해 50개의 정서 어휘를 평정하고 데이터는 범주형 주성분분석을 이용하여 분석하였다. 분석 결과 Russell(1980)의 이차원 정서 구조 모형에서 각성 수준 차원은 동작의 무게감과 시간감 차원과 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 강하고 빠른 동작일수록 각성 수준이 높은 정서가 나타났다. 또한 동작의 방향성 차원은 정서의 종류와 관련이 있는 것으로 드러났다. 직선 움직임은 높은 각성 수준의 부정적 정서와, 흔듦 움직임은 불안 및 초조와, 원형 움직임은 즐거운 정서와 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 동작을 통하여 정서 정보를 효과적으로 전달할 수 있음을 보여주었고, 동작과 정서를 연관 짓기 위해 방향성 차원과 무게감 차원 그리고 시간감 차원을 고려할 필요가 있음을 시사한다.

Effects of the facial expression presenting types and facial areas on the emotional recognition (얼굴 표정의 제시 유형과 제시 영역에 따른 정서 인식 효과)

  • The aim of the experimental studies described in this paper is to investigate the effects of the face/eye/mouth areas using dynamic facial expressions and static facial expressions on emotional recognition. Using seven-seconds-displays, experiment 1 for basic emotions and experiment 2 for complex emotions are executed. The results of two experiments supported that the effects of dynamic facial expressions are higher than static one on emotional recognition and indicated the higher emotional recognition effects of eye area on dynamic images than mouth area. These results suggest that dynamic properties should be considered in emotional study with facial expressions for not only basic emotions but also complex emotions. However, we should consider the properties of emotion because each emotion did not show the effects of dynamic image equally. Furthermore, this study let us know which facial area shows emotional states more correctly is according to the feature emotion.

Effectiveness of emotional regulation art class using right brain function (우뇌 기능을 활용한 정서조절 미술수업의 효과성)

  • In the elementary school period, since the developmental stage in the area of emotional regulation is immature, it is necessary to develop emotional regulation ability. In order to promote emotional regulation, this study provides an emotional regulation art class that utilizes the right brain function. Results were derived by analyzing through pre- and post-questions and post-interviews. As a result of the pre-post analysis, among the sub-elements of emotional regulation after class, 'Self-Emotion Recognition and Expression', 'Emotional Recognition and Consideration of Others', and 'Interpersonal Relationships' were statistically high. As a result of interview analysis, it was found that all students had a positive effect in the emotional regulation sub-item. As a result, they recognized and understood their emotions after class rather than before class, and had the effect of expressing emotions by purifying negative emotions into positive emotions. It is suggested that it is necessary to develop a program that applies various teaching and learning methods for emotional regulation art class in the future.

Influence of Emotional Awareness, Emotional Expressiveness, and Ambivalence over Emotional Expressiveness on College Student Adjustment in Freshman Nursing Students (간호대학신입생의 정서인식, 정서표현, 정서표현양면성이 대학생활적응에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was done to investigate emotional awareness, emotional expressiveness, ambivalence over emotional expressiveness, and college student adjustment, to analyze the factor affecting college student adjustment. The subjects were 159 freshman nursing students. Data were collected through structured questionnaires from May 20 to June 10, 2012. Data analysis was done using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and multiple regression with SPSS WIN v 18.0. Positive correlation were found between college student adjustment and mood monitoring as well as mood labeling. On the other hand, ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness and ambivalence over negative emotional expressiveness were significantly negative correlation with college student adjustment. In addition, mood monitoring, ambivalence over positive emotional expressiveness, mood labeling, and ambivalence over negative emotional expressiveness accounted for 31.8% of variance in college student adjustment. The results of this study suggest that programs for promoting emotional awareness and reducing ambivalence over emotional expressiveness are important for college adjustment in freshman nursing students.

  • 컴퓨터와 사용자와의 효과적인 정서적 상호작용의 도구로서 의인화된 형태의 인터페이스 에이전트의 정서 표현에 대한 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 기존의 연구는 의인화된 인터페이스 에이전트가 어떤 정서를 표현하는가에 초점을 두고 있다. 그러나 인간과의 원활한 정서적 상호작용에 영향을 미치는 것은 어떤 정서인가의 문제만이 아니다. 인간은 타인의 상황과 정서에 공감하는 방식으로 정서를 표현하는 상대를 더 긍정적으로 평가한다. 또한 공감하는 방식의 정서 표현은 사회적으로 적용되는 성별 고정관념에 따라 여성적 속성으로 분류된다. 따라서 공감하는 방식의 정서 표현이라 하더라도 표현의 주체가 남성이냐 여성이냐에 따라 상대방의 인식이 달라질 수 있다. 본 연구는 인간간의 사회적 관계에서 일어나는 공감적인 정서 표현과 표현하는 주체의 성별의 효과가 인간-인터페이스 에이전트간의 상호작용에서도 나타나는지를 검증하기 위하여 참가자와 인터페이스 에이전트가 함께 게임에 참여하는 과제를 실시하고 인터페이스 에이전트의 성별, 참가자의 성별, 얼굴 표정과 말을 통한 정서 표현의 공감 여부(타인의 상황에 공감하는 정서 표현 - 자신의 상황에 대한 정서 표현), 정서 표현 여부(얼굴 표정과 말로 정서를 표현 - 정서가 배제된 무표정과 말)에 따라 인터페이스 에이전트에 대해 참가자가 지각한 배려, 호감, 신뢰, 지능, 지배, 순종이 어떻게 다른지를 측정하는 실험을 실시했다. 그 결과, 타인의 상황과 정서에 공감하는 방식으로 정서를 표현하는 에이전트의 배려, 지능, 순종적 성향을 높게 평가하는 것으로 나타났다. 남성 에이전트의 경우, 정서를 표현하거나 정서가 배제된 표현을 하는 조건에 관계없이 참가자가 지각하는 배려와 호감의 차이가 없었으나, 여성 에이전트의 경우 정서를 표현하는 조건에서 배려와 호감이 높은 것으로 평가되었다. 반대로 참가자가 인터페이스 에이전트에 대해 갖는 신뢰에 대해서 여성 에이전트의 경우, 정서를 표현하거나 정서가 배제된 표현을 하는 조건에 관계없이 참가자가 느끼는 신뢰의 차이가 없었으나 남성 에이전트의 경우, 정서가 배제된 표현을 하는 에이전트에게 더 높은 신뢰를 보였다. 또한 남성 참가자에 비해 여성 참가자가 에이전트의 배려, 호감, 지능, 순종을 높게 평가하는 경향을 보였다. 본 연구의 결과는 사용자와 인터페이스 에이전트 간의 원활한 정서적 상호작용을 위해서는 어떤 정서를 표현할 것인지 뿐만 아니라 누구에 대한 정서를 어떻게 표현하는지, 정서를 표현하는 에이전트가 남성인지 여성인지, 에이전트와 상호작용하는 사용자가 남성인지, 여성인지를 고려할 필요가 있음을 시사하고 있다.

The Effects of an Emotional Intelligence Development Program on the Stress Recognition and the Stress Coping of Elementary School Children (정서지능 향상 프로그램이 아동의 스트레스 인식과 스트레스 대처에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of study was to examine the effects of an emotional intelligence development program on the stress recognition and stress coping of elementary school children. The subjects of this study are 24 fourth grade students who were selected based on the level of their emotional intelligence and stress recognition(level under the mean). They were divided into an experimental group and a control group, and each group had 12 students. The quantitative results of this study are as follows: First, the experimental-group increased in the level of emotional intelligence and showed a significant increase in the sub-areas of emotional intelligence(emotional recognition and expression, thought promotion) than the control group. Second, the experimental group decreased in the level of stress recognition and showed a significant decrease in the sub-areas of stress recognition(parents, family environment, friends, schoolworks) than the control group. Third, the experimental group improved in stress coping and showed a significant improvement in the sub-areas of stress coping(active coping, passive/avoidant coping, and social support seeking coping) than the control group. This study shows that emotional intelligence development program can be an effective tool for the change of stress recognition and stress coping of elementary school children.

Emotion Recognition in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Comparison of Musical and Visual Cues (음악 단서와 시각 단서 조건에 따른 학령기 자폐스펙트럼장애 아동과 일반아동의 정서 인식 비교)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate how accurately children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD; n = 9) recognized four basic emotions (i.e., happiness, sadness, anger, and fear) following musical or visual cues. Their performance was compared to that of typically developing children (TD; n = 14). All of the participants were between the ages of 7 and 13 years. Four musical cues and four visual cues for each emotion were presented to evaluate the participants' ability to recognize the four basic emotions. The results indicated that there were significant differences between the two groups between the musical and visual cues. In particular, the ASD group demonstrated significantly less accurate recognition of the four emotions compared to the TD group. However, the emotion recognition of both groups was more accurate following the musical cues compared to the visual cues. Finally, for both groups, their greatest recognition accuracy was for happiness following the musical cues. In terms of the visual cues, the ASD group exhibited the greatest recognition accuracy for anger. This initial study support that musical cues can facilitate emotion recognition in children with ASD. Further research is needed to improve our understanding of the mechanisms involved in emotion recognition and the role of sensory cues play in emotion recognition for children with ASD.

Cultural Homelessness and Psychological Well-Being of Young Cross-Cultural Individuals: Moderating Role of Emotional Clarity (교차문화 청소년들의 문화적 소속감의 부재와 심리적 안녕감의 관계: 정서인식 명확성의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • Objectives: This study investigated the challenges of young cross-cultural individuals (CCIs) through the cultural homelessness (CH) framework. Methods: Through a survey of 151 CCIs, the study empirically examined the relationship between CH and psychological well-being (PWB), as well as the moderating role of emotional clarity (EC). Results: Results indicated that CH was significantly and negatively associated with PWB, especially on the Positive Relations with Others and Environmental Mastery dimensions. Individuals with high CH tended to have less satisfactory relationships and a reduced sense of control over daily life situations, regardless of their EC level. A significant interaction effect between CH and EC was found, specifically in Positive Relations with Others (PR) and Personal Growth (PG). For individuals with high CH, however, satisfactory relationships were dependent on their EC level; they reported more positive relationships with others when their EC levels were high. Interestingly, individuals with high CH were likely to report a high desire for personal growth regardless of their EC level, indicating that they may appear ambitious but may be experiencing unclear emotions. Conclusions: These findings suggest that CH and EC are issues that need to be dealt with simultaneously. As individuals' PWB depends not only on their CH level, but also on their EC, reducing the level of CH should not be the only goal in promoting the well-being of CCIs. Increasing individuals' EC would be just as important, as high EC, along with low CH, predicts important dimensions of PWB.

Effect of the Peer Emotion Coaching Program on the High School Students' Emotional Recognizing, Empathy and Emotional Regulation (또래정서코칭프로그램이 고등학생의 정서인식, 감정이입, 정서조절에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose of this study was to improve the emotional intelligence of high school students in adolescence, to solve the difficulties of relationships, to solve the maladjustment problems, and to provide practical data that can be used to prevent their deviant behaviors by identifying the effect of peer emotional coaching program on emotional intelligence in high school students. This study consisted of the experimental group of 14 students and the control group of 14 students from 28 students who voluntarily wanted to participate in the peer emotional coaching program from April 17 to May 29, 2017 in S high school located in G city. The peer emotional coaching program was applied for the experimental group over 12 sessions, and the pre and post test of both groups were performed simultaneously. A corresponding sample T test was performed for the collected data that were analyzed using SPSS 20.0 for Windows. As a result, the emotional awareness of the experimental group was found to have a significant effect on the peer emotional coaching program, but the empathy and the emotion regulation did not show any significant effect. It was found that the peer emotional coaching program was a medium that could affect the emotional awareness of high school students. With the results of this study, we suggested a way to improve the emotional awareness for high school students.
