  • A membrane contactor is a device that achieves liquid/liquid or gas/liquid mass transfer without dispersion of one phase within another. This is accomplished by passing the fluids on opposite sides of a microporous membrane. This approach offers a number of important advantages over conventional dispersed phase contactors, including absence of emulsions, no flooding at high flow rates, no unloading at low flow rates, and high interfacial area. This article provides a general review of membrane contactors, including operating principles and applications.

  • Ice loads may be conveniently categorized as local ice loads and global ice loads. Local ice loads are often defined as ice pressures acting on local areas of shell plates and stiffeners. Therefore, local ice loads are defined in all ice class rules. However, directly measuring the local ice pressure using the actual ice class vessel is a very difficult task because appropriate instruments for direct measurement must be installed on the outer hull, and they are easily damaged by direct ice contacts/impacts. This paper focuses on the estimation of the local ice pressure using the data obtained from icebreaking tests in the Arctic sea in 2010 using the Korean icebreaking research vessel (IBRV) ARAON. When she contacted the sea ice, the local deformation of the side shell was measured by the strain gauges attached to the inside of the shell. Simultaneously, the contact area between the side shell and sea ice is investigated by analyzing the distribution of the measured strain data. Finally, the ice pressures for different contact areas are estimated by performing a structural analysis.

  • The grounding systems provide a low resistance path for fault or normal currents into the earth. The material for reducing ground resistance is buried around the grounding electrode to increase its effective size of the electrode and thus to obtain low ground resistance. Increasing the contacting area with the grounding electrode is effective for lowering the ground resistance in soils. Using this idea the conductive expansion ground resistance reducing material was developed. In this paper experimental data has shown that the ground resistance reduction method using proposed material is superior to using a typically available commercial ground resistance reducing material.

  • An in situ regeneration of activated carbon bed using an ozonated water was studied in order for avoiding the carbon loss, contaminant emission and time consuming for discharge-regeneration-repacking in a conventional thermal regeneration process. Using phenol and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as adsorbates, the adsorption breakthrough and in situ regeneration with the ozonated water were repeated. These organics were supposed to degrade by the oxidation reaction of ozone, regenerating the bed for reuse. As the number of regeneration increased, the adsorption capacity for phenol was reduced, but the change was stabilized showing no further reduction after reaching a certain degree of decrement. The reduction of adsorption capacity was due to the increase of pore size resulting in the decrease of specific surface area during ozonation. The adsorption capacity of phenol decreased after the ozonated regeneration because the in-pore adsorption was prevalent for small molecules like phenol. However, PEG did not show such decrease and the adsorption capacity was constantly maintained after several cycles of the ozonated regeneration probably because the external surface adsorption was the major mechanism for large molecules like PEG. Since the reduction in the pore size and specific surface area for small molecules were proportional to the duration of contact time with the ozonated water, careful considerations of the solute size to be removed and controlling the contact time were necessary to enhance the performance of the ozonated in situ regeneration of activated carbon bed.

  • We have developed a non-destructive, touch-free method for estimating leaf areas with a structured-light three-dimensional (3D) scanner. When the surfaces of soybean leaves were analyzed with both the 3D scanner and a leaf area meter, the results were linearly related ($R^2=0.90$). The strong correlation ($R^2=0.98$) was calculated between shoot fresh weights and leaf areas when the scanner was employed during growth stages V1 to V4. We also found that leaf areas measured by the scanner could be used to detect changes in growth responses to abiotic stress. Whereas under control conditions the areas increased over time, salt and drought treatments were associated with reductions in those values after 14 d and 12 d, respectively. Based on our findings, we propose that a structured-light 3D scanner can be used to obtain reliable estimates of leaf area and plant biomass.

  • This paper describes the effects of kinetic parameters such as attaching speed, attaching time, and dettaching speed on printing property of electrodes which were fabricated by micro-contact printing with Ag ink. In inking process the attaching speed was preferable to be less than 1 mm/s, attaching time as short as possible, and detaching speed larger than 1000 mm/s in order to obtain the transfer ratio of ink larger than 98%. Meanwhile in printing process the parameters were totally opposite to the results of inking process; attaching speed larger than 100 mm/s, attaching time larger than 30 sec, and detaching speed less than 1 mm/s for the best results. With the parameters we could obtain the micro-contact printed electrodes with the minimum line width of $30\;{\mu}m$, thickness of 300~500 nm, roughness less than 50 nm, and resistivity of about $15{\sim}16{\mu\Omega\cdot}cm$.

  • This study deals with the side-swipe accidents of 4-legged signalized intersections in Cheongju. The objectives are to analyze the characteristics of the accidents and to develop the related models. In pursuing the above, this study gives particular emphasis to finding the appropriate methodology to modelling. The main results are as follows. First, injuries were analyzed to be twice than property-only accidents in the side-swipe accidents. The accidents were evaluated to occur more in inside-intersection. Also, the accidents were analyzed to be almost the auto-related accidents and to be occurred by the unsafely-driving activity. Second, multiple linear regression models were evaluated to be more statistically significant than multiple non-linear. The most fitted models were analyzed to be the models with the number of accidents as the dependent variable. The factors of side-swipe accidents analyzed in this study were ADT, area of intersection, right-turn-only-lane, number of pedestrian crossings, limited speed of main road, maximum grade and number of signal phase.

  • The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effects of high density polyethylene (HDPE)/carbon black composite materials were investigated by enhancing adhesive characteristics of electrodes and controlling HDPE chemical crosslinking. When the silver paste was used as an electrode for the same 45 wt% HDPE/carbon composites, the resistance was over 1 $\Omega$, which should be compared with the resistance of 0.2 $\Omega$ for the dendritic copper electrode. In general, the silver-paste electrode exhibited higher electrical resistance than cupper electrode due to the interfacial resistance between the electrode and PTC composites. The HDPE/carbon composite exhibited typical PTC characteristics maintaining a constant resistance up to vicat point and showing a maximum at the melting point of HDPE. The crosslinked HDPE significantly decreased the negative temperature coefficient (NTC) phenomena, and desirably showed a constant or slightly increasing feature of electrical resistance in the high temperature region.
