  • In this study, material nonlinear finite element program is developed to analyze reinforced concrete shell of arbitrary geometry considering tension stiffening effects. This study is capable of tracing the load-deformation response and crack propagation, as well as determining the internal concrete and steel stresses through the elastic, inelastic and ultimate ranges in one continuous computer analysis. The cracked shear retention factor is introduced to estimate the effective shear modulus including aggregate interlock and dowel action. The concrete is assumed to be brittle in tension and elasto-plastic in compression. The Drucker-Prager yield criterion and the associated flow rule are adopted to govern the plastic behavior of the concrete. The reinforcing bars are considered as a steel layer of equivalent thickness. A layered isoparametric flat finite element considering the coupling effect between the in-plane and the bending action was developed. Mindlin plate theory taking account of transverse shear deformation was used. An incremental tangential stiffness method is used to obtain a numerical solution. Numerical examples about reinforced concrete shell are presented. Validity of this method is studied by comparing with the experimential results of Hedgren and the numerical analysis of Lin.

  • The present study proposed a method that dissolves ultrasonographic images into multiple resolutions using wavelet conversion and a boundary detection filter and improves the quality of ultrasonographic images through boundary detection filtering. In order to reduce noises and strengthen edges, the proposed method adjusted selectivity coefficient by area step by step from a low resolution image obtained from wavelet converted images to a high resolution image and performed edge filtering in consideration of direction. Through this method, we generated a selective low pass filtering effect in areas except edges by decreasing the wavelet coefficient for pixels in spot areas, improved continuity by smoothing edges in the tangential direction, and enhanced contrast by thinning in the normal direction. Through an experiment, we compared the filtering method using a non linear anisotropic expansion model and the filtering method using wavelet contraction structure in single resolution.

  • A geometrically nonlinear analysis procedure for plane frame structures in order to study the static and dynamic post-buckling behavior of these structures subjected to circulatory forces is presented. The elastic and geometric stiffness matrices, the mass matrix and load correction stiffness matrix are derived from the extended virtual work principle, where the tangent stiffness matrix becomes non-symmetric due to the effects of non-conservative circulatory forces. The dynamic analysis of plane frame structures subjected to circulatory forces in pre- and post-buckling ranges is carried out by integrating the equations of motion directly by the numerically stable Newmark method. Numerical results are presented in order to demonstrate the vality and accuracy of the proposed procedure.

  • In order to trace the lateral-torsional post-bucking behaviors of thin-walled space frames with non-symmetric cross sections, a geometrically non-linear finite element formulation is presented by applying incremental equilibrium equations based on the updated Lagrangian formulation and introducing Vlasov's assumption. The improved displacement field for non-symmetric thin-walled cross sections is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations, and the potential energy corresponding to the semitangential rotations and moments is consistently derived. For finite element analysis, tangent stiffness matrices of thin-walled space frame element are derived by using the Hermition polynomials as shape functions. A co-rotational formulation in order to evaluate the unbalanced loads is presented by separating the rigid body rotations and pure deformations from incremental displacements and evaluating the updated direction cosines and incremental member forces.

  • The Krylov-Schur algorithm has been applied to reveal the eigen-properties of the wave guide having the square cross section. The eigen-matrix equation has been constructed from FEM with the basis function of the tangential edge-vectors of the triangular element. This equation has been treated firstly with Arnoldi decomposition to obtain a upper Hessenberg matrix. The QR algorithm has been carried out to transform it into Schur form. The several eigen values satisfying the convergent condition have appeared in the diagonal components. The eigen-modes for them have been calculated from the inverse iteration method. The wanted eigen-pairs have been reordered in the leading principle sub-matrix of the Schur matrix. This sub-matrix has been deflated from the eigen-matrix equation for the subsequent search of other eigen-pairs. These processes have been conducted several times repeatedly. As a result, a few primary eigen-pairs of TE and TM modes have been obtained with sufficient reliability.

  • In order to trace the lateral post-buckling behaviors of thin-wafled space frames, a geometrically nonlinear finite element formulation is presented by applying incremental equilibrium equations based on the updated Lagrangian formulation and introducing Vlasov's assumption. The improved displacement field for symmetric thin-walled cross sections is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations, and the potential energy corresponding to the semitangential rotations and moments is consistently derived. For finite element analysis, tangent stiffness matrices of the thinwalled space frame element with 7 degrees of freedom including the restrained warping for each node are derived by using the Hermition polynomials as shape functions. A co-rotational formulation in order to evaluate the unbalanced loads is presented by separating the rigid body rotations and pure deformations from incremental displacements and evaluating the updated direction cosines of the frame element due to rigid body rotations and incremental member forces from pure deformations. Finite element solutions for the spatial buckling and post-buckling analysis of thin-walled space frames are presented and compared with available solutions and other researcher's results.

  • In this study, we have investigated the correlation of far-field detection sensitivity of surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensors with optical signatures associated with the near-field overlap of biomolecules. The results confirm a direct relation between the far-field and near-field parameters, particularly for optical signatures defined in terms of lateral electric field components that are tangential to the interface and thus continuous across the interface. The overall correlation between near-field optical signatures and far-field resonance shift exceeded 97%. The results can be highly useful to evaluate detection sensitivity of SPR biosensors that take advantage of complex structures for localization of surface waves.

  • Space frame structures have the advantage of constructing a large space structures without column and it may be considered as a shell structure. Nevertheless, with the characteristics of thin and long term of spacing, the unstable problem of space structure could not be set up clearly, and there is a huge difference between theory and experiment. Therefore, in this work, the tangential stiffness matrix of space frame structures is studied to solve the instability problem, and the nonlinear incremental analysis of the structures considering rise-span ratio(${\mu}$) and the ratio of load($R_L$) is performed for searching unstable points. Basing on the results of the example, global buckling can be happened by low rise-span ratio(${\mu}$), nodal buckling can be occurred by high rise-span ratio(${\mu}$). And in case of multi node space structure applying the ratio of load($R_L$), the nodal buckling phenomenon occur at low the ratio of load($R_L$), the global buckling occur a1 high the ratio of load($R_L$). In case of the global buckling, the load of bifurcation is about from 50% to 70% of perfect one's snap-through load.

  • A mixed finite element model was developed using the classical plate theory to analyze the nonlinear bending of a plate. The appropriate weight functions for the constraints integrated over the domain were determined by the Lagrange multiplier method by using the principle of minimum virtual energy; which provides the constitutive relations between force-like variables and strains. All of detail terms of element wise coefficient matrices and associate tangent matrices to be used in the Newton iterative method are presented. Then, the linear solutions of the current model and those of the traditional displacement model under the SS (simple support) boundary conditions were compared with the existing analytical solution. The post-processed images of the nonlinear results of the force-like variables are presented to show the continuity of the solutions at the joint of the element boundaries. Finally, the converged nonlinear finite element solutions of the current model are compared with those of existing traditional displacement model.
