  • Vehicle idle has become an increasing quality concern for automobile manufacturers because of its impact on customer satisfaction. As demand for better fuel economy increases, automobile manufacturers are continuously looking for any benefits from different driving conditions. Combustion variability in spark ignition engines was recognized that the stability of engine at idle is affected by the factors of fuel injection timing, ignition timing and air-fuel ratio. Therefore in this research, the results will be shown the effects of stability and the variations at idle according to fuel injection timing, ignition timing and air-fuel ratio as the basic parameters.

  • An engine control system in which the conventional mechanical ignition system is studied. The contact point of the breaker is replaced by the contactless magnetic pick up sensor from which the information of the speed and the position of the crankshaft is extracted , and further an electronic High Energy Ignitim System Is designed, implemented and tested . The High Energy Igniticwl System increases the secondary spark voltage of the ignition coil from the conventional 10000~15000 volts to the 30000~40000 volts resulting in improving the combustion efficiency. Also, instead of the conventional advimce mechanism forigniliontiming control, a microprocessorbased timinng mechanisn is installed to determine the ignition timing data in response to the engine rpm and the intake manifold vacuum.

  • An Eulerian-Lagrangian method is employed to simulate the ignition process and the flame propagation through the air/fuel spray mixture in a closed constant-volume combustor. The spray mixture is ignited by providing a hot wall at the end of the combustor or by firing the electric spark. The investigated parameters involve the initial droplet size, overall equivalence ratio, initial fuel vapor concentration, distance between the hot wall and the nearest droplet, and the ignition energy. Numerical results clearly show the existence of the optimum spray condition for minimizing the ignition energy and the ignition delay time as well as the critical dependence of ignition upon the distance of the heat source to the nearest droplet.

  • In spark ignited engines, the electrical spark not only sets the time for the onset of combustion but also is able to greatly influence the character of the initial flame growth and the subsequent combustion, and thereby can influence engine performance. The relative importance of the ignition energy is particularly high under lean or high residual gas or exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). In this study, a modeling of flame Initiation and its development is proposed. Submodels consist in representing of cylinder pressure and temperature, heat transfer to cylinder wall, and flame kernel heat transfer to ambient air and to spark plug electrodes. The breakdown process and the subsequent electrical power input initially control the kernel growth while intermediate growth is mainly dominated by diffusion or conduction. Then, the flame propagates by the chemical energy, and laminar and turbulent flame velocity.

  • A new ignition system concept was developed to improve ignition performance, accuracy of control and the reliability of the ignition system. The new ignition system has ho호 frequency discharge characteristics with 1.5-2.0 ms discharge duration, in place of the usual solitary longer duration event. We applied the system to a commercial engine to study its influence on the maximum combustion pressure attained during the cycle, when this peak pressure occurred, imep, variation rate of the engine speed and the flammability limit of a lean mixture. In this study, we clarified that the new ignition system had a beneficial effect of the lean mixture flammability limit. Also for a given mixture strength we found that the mew ignition system gave a higher peak cylinder pressure than in the case of the conventional ignition system.

  • The ability of the engine starting performance of conventional ignition system being currently used in automobile gasoline engine is investigated, and the method of improving is discussed and experimented. The conventional ignition system cannot obtain high ignited voltage because its current is limited by decreasing of terminal voltage of battery at starting the engine also causes irregularity in the starting engine. This paper shows that problem can be improved practically by control of ignition energy properly according to the engine speed, consequently this experimental ignition system can eliminate to remarkable extent the function of the engine starting, and also enhance the performance of the engine at high speed.

  • The combustion characteristics of a single droplet of diesel and bio-diesel have been investigated experimentally with varying droplet size, ambient temperature and compound ratio in a high temperature chamber. The fuels used were diesel with bio-diesel contents varied from 0% to 100%. Each experiment has been performed from 970K to 1070K by 50K intervals. Imaging with a high-speed digital camera was adopted to measure the ignition delay and flame life-time, as well as to observe micro-explosion behavior. The increase of droplet size and decrease of furnace temperature cause an increase of the ignition delay time. As the bio-diesel content decreases, the ignition delay increases and the micro-explosion behavior is strengthened. It is also confirmed that the full combustion time decreases as the micro-explosion occurred.

  • In this paper, we study effect of the factors, participating in the combustion as the initial conditions, such as the flow characteristics of the mixture and the initial temperature, pressure and equivalence ratio in the chamber on the ignitability of the mixture, the combustion duration and the maximum combustion-pressure. The experiment was performed in a constant-volume combustion chamber, with turbulent flow inside, equivalent to the actual engine at TDC. The present experiment utilizes three devices which differ from each other in the distribution and the magnitude of discharge energy.

  • Backfire occurrence must be controlled for the practical use of hydrogen fueled engine. It was found from preceeding studies that crevice volume around piston rings could effect a backfire occurrence. In this study, a possible countermeasure to backfire occurrence was evaluated by using multi point ignition method around piston ring. The results showed that backfire limited equivalence ratio was increased by a little due to a enhancing effect of mixture combustion around piston crevice volume.
